[Future] Troyboi & Diplo – Afterhours Ft. Nina Sky (Sharps X Convex Remix)

Seattle’s Sharps and Convex of LA partner up to take on the single “Afterhours” by Troyboi and Diplo. Their free remix is an awe-striking future bass production that is not your run of the mill record. Sensational synths pierce the speakers alongside the sweet vocal from Nina Sky. Sometimes songs of this style keep things too light, but these two producers make sure to bring big 808’s and manage to keep things thick and juicy. Their take on “Afterhours” is one the chiller side, but it still has energy and groove, making it a track that can hold it’s own at festivals. Anytime you try and take on a Diplo original, it’s a tough thing, but Sharps and Convex pull it off without a hitch. If you didn’t know Sharps or Convex already, this is one hell of an intro to these talents.

[House] Paul Mayson – Pray Ft. Far East Movement & Ben Thornewill

Paul Mayson recently came out with one of the dopest house tracks we’ve heard in a while. “Pray” is an excessively fun record that features Far East Movement and Ben Thornewill of Jukebox The Ghost. Powerhouse Music is releasing this track on November 1st, but that didn’t stop them from building some hype by uploading it onto Soundcloud for fans to enjoy in the mean time. Paul Mayson has had continuous support from huge names like Armin Van Buuren, Hardwell, and Martin Garrix, and it’s no surprise after hearing “Pray.” This record is one of those timeless tracks that defines an artist, so don’t be surprised when you’re out next Summer and you here this one being played still. It’s a sonic ball of energy that doesn’t let up. It will have you singing, dancing and letting yourself loose with all the good vibrations you need. If you’ve had a tough week, this will cheer you right up.

[Indie Dance] Lazyboy Empire – Vampire

Need something laid-back to get you over the hump? Lazyboy Empire has got you covered with the new single “Vampire.” It’s actually the act’s first and only track on Soundcloud at the moment. With the lyrical content and the quality of the production, it’s safe to say this is one of the coolest, and most intriguing Halloween tracks. It’s definitely not what you’d expect, but the soft indie dance style is immaculate. Fans of saxophone will be especially keen on this record, as Lazyboy Empire doesn’t disappoint with showing off the skills with the sexy instrument. With the launch of the project being already so successful, it has us wondering just what ammunition is waiting to be unleashed in the future. Lazyboy Empire is an act to keep a sharp eye on as their sound caters to so many diverse groups of people. “Vampire” is a monster you want to be taken over by, so get to streaming, or buy this one on iTunes.

S.M. Wolf – Lies To Heathens [TMN PREMIERE]

A catchy-as-hell, energetic, and anthemic tune is just what we needed to shake an unfortunate hangover from last night’s office Halloween party, and luckily for us, and our aching, cloudy heads, Indy-based S.M. Wolf has saved the day with “Lies to Heathens.”

You may not have heard of this band quite yet, but with their highly infectious, sing-along style, it won’t be long before you start seeing them pop up all over the place. This tune highlights their indie-psych-pop prowess, boasting a nostalgic sound rife with soaring guitars, playful vocal harmonies, and an incredibly memorable chorus.

This is the second sneak peek at their forthcoming album, Neon Debris, which drops on November 7th via both In Store Recordings and Jurassic Pop.

[House] Snoop Dogg – Drop It Like It’s Hot (The Golden Pony Remix)

We’ve been closely following NY’s favorite curly-haired dance export The Golden Pony for years now. While the pair have made their mark on tunes from artists as varied as Simon & Garfunkel, Avicii, Daft Punk, The Grateful Dead and Seinabo Sey; it has been their work revolving around hip-hop or R&B which has really moved us in the past. While it’s been a minute since The Golden Pony has taken on any rap ciphers, today they’re back with an uplifting indie-house groover in the form of a Snoop Dog “Drop It Like It’s Hot” remix. The pair plays off of Pharrell Williams & Snoop Dogg’s gangster feel with a buoyant melody anchored by the kind of hooky whistle that wouldn’t be too out of place on a Bob Sinclar record; but where Sinclar would lean in closer to pop structuring, The Golden Pony unleash a perfectly swung, rolling bassline to lend more than enough underground sensibility and groove to their vision. When pressed about their latest remix the pair remarked: “The beat of this track originally came from a remix we did for Hillary Duff’s track “Sparks”. We made an instrumental version, which we have been dropping in our dj sets over the summer. One time we dropped a Snoop acapella over it and some magic happened, so we decided to make a studio version of it!” We’re certainly glad they did. Enjoy The Golden Pony’s “Drop It Like It’s Hot” remix above.

[House] Porsches – Karate (Need & Necessity Remix)

Perhaps the single most satisfying occurrence as a music writer -especially for a publication which prides itself on breaking artists before anyone else- is seeing acts with whom you’ve been enamored with evolve from releasing free tunes on their soundcloud to putting out music on some of your favorite labels. Such has been the case with Denver based house duo Need & Necessity whose latest record, an official remix for Porsches’ new single “Karate”, has been snapped up by tastemaking Australian dance imprint Sweat It Out! Music (also home to acts like RÜFÜS, Motez, Cassian, Yolanda Be Cool and What So Not) . Over the past few years we’ve had the pleasure of witnessing a steady ascension from the pair, and their latest remix offering is perhaps their best yet. Taking a deeply underground approach to their revision, N&N breaks down “Karate” into a club-ready jacker through the tactful implementation of rumbling sub-bass and their signature shuffled hi-hats before it gives way to a pounding synth line and one of the biggest grooves we’ve heard in a hot minute. With their last EP release, Patience, being picked up by another one of our favorite labels, Sleazy Deep, and now their Sweat It Out! debut, we’re expecting even bigger things from Need & Necessity as the year winds down.

Stream Need & Necessity’s “Karate” remix above, and be on the lookout for even more house gems from the assiduous duo in the near future.

[Future House] kiiara – Feels (Hotel Garuda Remix)

We got way too many feels for this one… Hotel Garuda was tapped to remix their good friend Kiiara‘s biggest hit-to-date “Feels”, and it’s magical in every way. Turning the original into a club-ready tune, the wonder duo is ready to get you dancing and vibing.  A thumping house bassline and airy Flume-like synths help drive the casual vocals by Kiiara, and Hotel Garuda once again demonstrates their versatility through the numerous varying drops in the track. Wave after wave of cleverly crafted vocal samples combining with infectious melodies highlight this magnificent collaboration. If you’re looking for a tune to be obsessed over for a while, this might be it.

Galimatias Dishes on His Tour, Remixing Porter Robinson, and Sade [TMN RESIDENT ARTIST INTERVIEW]

Galimatias-Main-Photo-IMG_7373-1-e1445983853932

As we started planning this month-long spotlight on Danish producer Galimatias, we were anxiously awaiting this portion of his Residency. Knowing that we would soon enter a selective group of very few publications who have had a chance to talk with this quickly rising star, we relished in the opportunity. The only drawback to this exclusive chat was how difficult it would soon be to narrow our questions down to a reasonable amount. In all honesty, we could have dialed up at least twenty-five, but that would have been a tremendously long read. Instead, we went with what you’ll find below.

TMN: First off, thank you so much for being a part of our Residency program. It’s an absolute pleasure to have you. You’ve just come off tour and a wildly successful EP. Did you take a moment to breathe, or have you jumped right back into the studio?

Thank you, it’s been a while since I’ve had time, so yeah, I’ve been excited to get back to making music. It was a pretty short tour run, but being the very first live shows for me and Alina both, we had a lot to learn going into it. So, it was still a big process.

TMN: Speaking of the tour, we have to imagine that you had a few “Holy shit!” moments. Was there any particular show or fan interaction that made you step back in disbelief?

Oh yeah, the first show in Santa Ana was for sure the craziest experience. It was so packed that some people couldn’t fit into the room and were standing in the hallway. The energy was so raw and positive. It’s one thing to see the numbers on the internet, but getting out there and feeling the people behind it is a whole new world. Once Alina started singing, everybody was singing along. My proudest moment was when Nas shook my hand after the show and said he was down with it. He was one of the artists I grew up listening to.

TMN Let’s touch on Urban Flora. It’s safe to say that this whole project started from a simple Soundcloud message, correct?

Back when Alina was just starting to write, which is only about 2 years ago, she was looking for instrumentals and came across a track of mine. So she wrote what would become “Drift” and sent it to me on Soundcloud. I was blown away and we started talking about music. Already then, I knew she was very different it was apparent not just in her songwriting, but also in the way she presented it. She is the most beautiful girl, but used this pitch black square as her picture across all social media and I remember asking her why. But, that’s how she connected with the right people and built a fanbase that fell in love with her art and not her face. I don’t know who would make that compromise and not just utilize everything they have. It was very intriguing to me. That’s when I knew this girl is 100% about her music. She sent me some acapellas of songs she had recorded. With two acapellas, I would make what became “Make You Feel” and “Pretty Thoughts”. This was late 2013. We released all those 3 tracks on Soundcloud. I didn’t look elsewhere for people to collaborate with after that. I was so set on us making a project together. From then we would just send back and forth ideas until we had created the 8 tracks of the EP.

10659207_836139066405035_1639315288811796579_n.jpg

TMN: While there are a few songs that are upbeat, a lot of them are slow and seductive. We’re not quite sure how to put this, but did you set out to create perfect tracks for all those “Bedroom Playlists” out there?
No. It’s intimate and sensual, but the music can be whatever the listener wants it to be. If that’s bedroom music, then that’s cool, but it wasn’t necessarily created with that intent.

TMN: One thing that came up a few times while listening through Urban Flora is a slight resemblance to Sade, especially “No Ordinary Love”. The association actually came up while listening to “Unfold.” Are you a fan of Love Deluxe, or was that purely coincidence?

I’m definitely a fan of Sade. My parents listened to her a lot, so I grew up on that. I wouldn’t say I’ve been directly inspired by any of the tracks to create Urban Flora, but maybe subconsciously, considering this is the music I’ve been listening to.

TMN: Let’s talk your remix for Porter Robinson. Talk about a perfect pairing! Two artists who are pushing the boundaries of electronic music on the same track. How did that opportunity come to be?

On Twitter, he asked me if I wanted to remix a track from his album. This was in early 2015, I picked “Fresh Static Snow” at the time because that song inspired me the most. I remember making a cool section, but then I was just stuck with it for months. Around summer time I gave up, but then he asked if I wanted to try another one of the tracks and I picked “Sea of Voices.” I was thinking a lot of the approach, cause the original is so cinematic and beautiful. It’s one of those songs that people develop a special relationship with, the kind of song that will represent a time or a certain moment in their life cause it’s so visual. It wasn’t just a generic pop song I was remixing. So, with that in mind, I decided that instead of trying to outdo the original in this kind of vibe, I’ll do something completely different.

TMN: Before we head into a few random questions, can you fill us in on what your musical upbringing was like? Did your parents stress this when you were a kid, or was it something you were naturally drawn to?

I was obsessed with music ever since I was young. As an 8-year-old kid, I would dance to my dad’s Michael Jackson records and force my parents and brother to watch it. I got my own CD player and would eventually start listening to a lot of hip-hop like Dr. Dre, Gangstarr, Nas, etc. I was always fascinated by the productions; the idea of creating a short loop so perfect that you could just listen to it on repeat for hours – and that’s exactly what I did. I’d find one song or a segment that I’d fall in love with and then repeat it over and over forever. My beginning with music production stems from one certain moment –

I was in this Danish store called Føtex with my dad just grocery shopping. I saw this computer program called Hiphop eJay which is basically a kid-friendly, intuitive version of modern DAW’s. I was 10 years old and had no idea what it was but it just caught my attention, so I begged my dad to get it for me, and he did. I wouldn’t be making music this day if it weren’t for that because that program sparked my curiosity and the desire to create.

TMN: One last business-related question. Can you talk to us about the Danish music scene, and what kind of impact that had on you? Can you name a few influences that people wouldn’t normally deduce from listening to your work? Is there anything specific you’re listening to now?

I grew up way out on the countryside – lots of cows, horses, and corn fields. As a kid that was the perfect environment, but nobody I was around were in any way interested in music production, so I was just creating in solitude at home and started putting my music online. I would start working with rappers around the country and learned a lot during the process. I enjoyed it, and I always wanted music to be my life, but Denmark is such a small country and the market for music is likewise. Even though the rappers I worked with were super talented, it isn’t even an option to make a living off of music in Denmark, unless you are one of the top few pop/mainstream artists. When I was 20 years old, I realized I wasn’t growing musically as I wanted, so I started doing my own thing. That’s when I released my 4-track EP as a solo artist, Galimatias, which happened to catch the attention of Alina. There is a lot of great music to be found in Denmark. Right now I am listening to Ukendt Kunstner, an electronic R&B duo. Check them out.

IMG_7319
TMN: At the end of each interview, we like to ask a few personal questions, just for fun. Let’s start with this – If we could look back in time, what posters would we find on teenage Gali’s walls?
No posters stand out in my memory, but my dad built me these two CD-racks to mount on my wall that would put my CD covers on display and I loved that thing. I would always put the albums I listened to the most on there. Busta Rhymes – Genesis, Nas’ Gods Son, Illmatic, Jazzmatazz by Guru, 2001 by Dre, etc.

TMN: What was your very first job that didn’t have anything to do with music?

I was a paperboy when I was 13. I quit when I was 15 and started selling beats instead.

TMN: Name one food you were introduced to when you moved to LA, that you now can’t live without.

I was put on to frozen dates by Alina. Dates are good already, but 10 times better when frozen. They can be found in my freezer at all times now.

TMN: If aliens landed on earth today, and asked you what music was, who would you show them first?

I would play them the Sweetheart of Kairi EP by Sorrow and Owsey. And, I would have some customized cans made for their obscure alien heads, because that kind of music needs to be heard on headphones, not speakers.

TMN: Finally, if your music were an animal, what would it be?

A jellyfish. Entrancing slow movements underwater. My music is underwater.

[Electronic] Branchez – Cuenta

It’s been a while since we’ve heard new material from Branchez, but the NYC-based producer still finds himself in regular rotation with anthemic remixes and inventive originals. Last night, he dropped off a freebie proving once again what sets him apart. “Cuenta” starts off with a video game-esque sample backed by insanely quick hi-hats cultivating a playful soundscape. The percussion constantly evolves making for a mind-altering experience in which you’ll notice a new complexity with every listen. Give this one a spin above and make sure to catch Branchez at one of his upcoming tour dates.

[Event Preview] Global Dance Festival Arizona – Rawhide – 11/20

There’s no doubt in anyone’s minds that we’re heavy supporters of Global Dance Festival. Originally started at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado, this brand is now branching out across multiple cities and states. Next up in this quickly-growing series takes place in a location that we couldn’t be more excited about – RAWHIDE.

Nestled in Chandler, Arizona, RAWHIDE is a replica 19th century western town. By now you’ve probably realized that attendees of this festival will be fully entrenched in a wild west style party come November 20th. Needless to say, we’re already on the hunt for some wranglers, a 10-gallon hat, and a sweet flannel.

If you’d like to see Deorro, Big Gigantic, Gesaffelstein, Mija, Sweater Beats, RL Grime, Cashmere Cat, and a handful of other top-name acts playing in an old western town, you have two ways to go about doing so.

1. You can purchase tickets right here.
2. You can enter to win tickets or a VIP upgrade to your existing tickets, by contributing a few bucks over at Cadence & Cause. Each contribution will help provide children in developing countries with life-saving medications.

[Hip-Hop] Joey Purp, Vic Mensa & Two Fresh – Still Got It

After making some waves with their single “Gettin Throwed” early in the summer, Two Fresh have returned with Joey Purp once again to prove that they “Still Got It”, this time bringing Vic Mensa along for the ride. Purp takes the lead on this one, racking up a couple of poignant punchlines while Vic handles the chorus and closes things out with some impressive bars of his own. This latest collaboration comes on the heels of the Nashville based twins’ latest EP, Torch, which is out today via Mad Decent and features additional appearances from Njomza, Curtis Williams and Jace of Two-9. The track is available for free download, but make sure to grab yourself a copy of the EP as well.

[Indie] Folded Like Fabric – Patiently

Some songs simply have a way of injecting a special feeling into the start of your day. Such was the case this morning when we came across I Tried, the debut EP from Folded Like Fabric and their opening single “Patiently”.  Folded Like Fabric is the Hastings, UK based project of Jay Mooncie & Connor Sims, and the pair’s jazz inflected take on a contemporary blend of R&B, pop, and indie sensibilities have had us swooning head over heels since first consumption. “Patiently” ambles out of the gate into a slow-burning build as Sims’ misty reverberations -which carry the faintest echoes of If You’re Feeling Sinister era Stuart Murdoch– dominate the first guitar-tickled half of the tune before picking up a loungey drum roll and gradually evolving into a more complete version of itself. The perfect pairing with your morning or afternoon coffee, trust us.

I Tried was released on 25th September via Beauvoir Records and can be picked up here. In the mean time, and since you’ve already made it this far, enjoy “Patiently” from Folded Like Fabric above.

Alek Fin (featuing Robot Koch) – Lift Up [TMN VIDEO PREMIERE]

It’s easy to get lost in any of Alek Fin’s gorgeous, layered, and enveloping songs, but we have a particularly strong affinity for “Lift Up.” The atmospheric hisses, the iconic, repeating guitar sample, and the rolling clicks and hi-hat hits all come together around this Thousand Oaks’ artist’s haunting vocals, creating an inescapable experience.

Today, we’re not only bringing you a listen to this tune, which also features production work from LA/Germany-based Robot Koch, but a first look at the music video as well. Imagined by Effixx, “Lift Up” received a dazzling, avant-garde visual interpretation with as much textural depth and intrigue as one would hope.

This is the first official music video for one of my tracks and it’s been a long time coming. I was really excited to work with Anthony (aka Effixx) on it. His visual translation of the music and concept was everything I hoped it would be and more.

After you watch the video premiere below, head over to iTunes and pick up the entire Án Mynda EP. You won’t be disappointed.

[Festival Review] Moments & Songs from Treasure Island 2015–SF, 10/17-18

DNP_5253It’s particularly sad to say goodbye to Treasure Island Music Festival. Not only does TI mark the end of the summer festival season, but it’s also a true breathe of fresh air from the oft-overwhelming mega events that have come to dominate the space. With relief from the typical pains of festivals –trouble meeting friends, overcrowded stages, set conflicts and the list goes on–we always walk out of TI refreshed and this year was no exception. Overlooking the San Francisco skyline, Treasure Island’s serenity never fails to amaze us and it didn’t hurt that the weather was pretty much perfect all weekend.

The clear-split lineup that highlighted electronic/hip-hop on Saturday and alternative rock/pop on Sunday gave each day a vibe all its own. Take a trip back with photos and songs from the two different, but equally enjoyable, days.

All photos by Dominic Powell unless otherwise stated.

The Debut of Viceroy’s Summer Jam Bringing Out the Sun

DNP_4484

The clouds were still looming when Viceroy took the stage early on Saturday with an ensemble of musicians for his first ever live show (dubbed “Viceroy’s Summer Jam”). Just in time, the sun emerged along with the set’s bright, tropical vibes full of unreleased tunes.

Gorgon City’s Breathtaking Live Set

DNP_4671

While Viceroy warmed up the crowd, Gorgon City truly got the dance party going. Their live ensemble included drums, an incredible keyboardist, DJs and active vocalists who contributed both hype and flawless singing. Both long-time fans and casual onlookers were grooving for what was undoubtedly one of the most memorable sets of the weekend.

Shamir’s Sass-Filled Showmanship

STS9’s Epic 45-Minute Jam Session

header_logo

As an avid STS9 fan, I wasn’t sure what to expect out of a condensed set from an electronic jam band who normally play for at least 3 hours. Luckily, they basically packed as much energy as they possibly could into their short set making for a literal non-stop flow of energy. It was pretty evident that the Saturday crowd, a pretty accurate reflection of the day’s lineup, wasn’t necessarily familiar with the tribe prior but they surely left an impression.

The HudMo Boom

DNP_5315 (1)

Hudson Mohawke brought a full band to help do his bombastic soundscapes justice seemingly shaking the entire island. While his solo material–from “Fuse” to “Shadows”–proved potent, he made sure not to leave out his TNGHT material either closing emphatically on “Higher Ground.”

FKA Twigs’ Hypnotizing Stage Presence

DNP_5809

Those unfamiliar with FKA Twigs likely found themselves confused at the start of her set with the haunting lights, heavy bass and her equally eerie falsetto to match. As the set continued, though, FKA Twigs’ stole the show with her unsettling, hypnotizing performance on the main stage. Even more impressive than her voice was the way she intertwined it with sensual interpretative dance.

Big Grams Dropping “Ms. Jackson” and Bringing Out RTJ

DNP_6099

Big Grams - Fell In The Sun

Of all the weekend’s shows, Big Grams had the most palpable crowd energy for their first ever collaborative performance. Likely as a result of countless hours spent in the studio, there was an undeniable on-stage chemistry between Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter of Phantogram and hip-hop legend Big Boi. Just as some fans started to file out seeking a good spot for Deadmau5, the immediately recognizable “Ms. Jackson” emerged stopping everyone in their tracks. Sarah’s vocal accompaniment worked surprisingly well over the classic, which was swiftly followed by a Run The Jewels guest appearance to perform our favorite Big Grams tune, “Born to Shine.”

deadmau5 – “You There?”

DNP_6538

Equipped with his stunning dome, deadmau5 took the Treasure Island audience on a unique electronic journey. Rather than provide instant and immediate gratification, which would have been a cake walk with his catalogue, deadmau5 carried out songs in such a way that almost toyed with fans–lulling the crowd with extended interludes before exploding into euphoria or deep dance grooves. “You There?” played as the dome slowly opened backed by an oscillating lifeline visual proving the best example of that technique.

DNP_6440DNP_6558 DNP_6597

Lower Dens – “Ondine”

DNP_6787

Lower Dens helped kick off a Sunday full of talented bands with a powerful set breathing new life into their phenomenal album Escape From Evil. Lead singer Jana Hunter’s impressive vocal range stood out during their performance.

Father John Misty’s Mid-Set Man Bun Demonstration

DNP_6991

Father John Misty easily took the award for most animated performer of the weekend frolicking endlessly around the stage while delivering a flawless set. At one point between songs, he self-narrated as he tied up his locks into the classic man bun. Another memorable point came when he grabbed a fan’s phone and took an extended video of himself while performing.

DNP_7172

Amidst a Day 2 full of alternative rock, the Silent Disco served as a bit of a retreat back into the electronic vibes of Saturday. Looking out on to the Bay under rays of sunlight hearing only the music in your headphones–in this case, a medley of Beatles mash-ups–was a surprisingly meditative change of pace.

The War On Drugs’ “Red Eyes” has stuck with us more than any other single song from the weekend’s festivities but their whole set was packed with uniquely incredible emotion.

After missing their set at Outside Lands Music Festival last year, Chvrches redeemed themselves and then some with their performance at Treasure Island. They almost felt more fit for the Saturday crowd but ended up serving as a welcome deviation that got everyone moving.

The National provided a sultry closing to the weekend with their often heart-wrenching sound. As the set closed, lead singer Matt Berninger brought out the Chvrches front woman for a beautiful duet of “I Need My Girl,” our favorite song by The National.
