[Future R&B] The Loft – Survive

Onamazu may be a new name to you, but this is a collective built on expanding into new territories. The latest in their Singles Series is a dark, minimalist tune courtesy of The Loft that is nearly indistinguishable from a Weeknd B-side. We don’t make that comparison lightly, so if you’re a fan of Abel, jump right in and hit play.

The production works well in its simplicity, allowing for the polished vocals to carry the weight of the tune in its chilling and commanding fashion. This is one of Onamazu’s most poignant releases, as the shift from experimental to accessible works heavily in their favor, making The Loft a stand out within their lineup. Kick back and enjoy your night with the latest from this eclectic group, and be sure to support them in any way you can!

[Nu-disco] Lenno – Fever (Feat. Benson)

Lenno is a 20-year-old producer from Finland. In 2015 he released a string of constant hits and played over 20 international shows. In other words, this young artist is breaking through and you don’t want to miss his new release. I love Lenno’s music because he can take serious musical aspects and blend it into an overall fun pop sound. “Fever” is his the single that features nu-disco rhythms and a catchy vocal part from the singer, Benson.  Check it out!

[Electronica] Mano Le Tough – Half Closed Eyes

Mano Le Tough, aka Niall Mannion, is a now Berlin based producer who’s been making crazy moves in the European electronic scene, and we’re hoping it’s not long before he’s as big of a hit with the States as he is with TMN. Getting his start in a seaside village close to Dublin, Ireland, Mano Le Tough brings some electronica serenity to the latest track off his newest EP Trails.

“Half Closed Eyes” is a track that hits us a few tunes deep into the album and changes up its pace at just the right time. Beginning with the kind of experimental “off beat” electronic percussions you might have the pleasure of hearing in a Nicolas Jaar track (*pause for a moment of silence for Darkside please*), the song also opens with a sample of some chopped up and looped vocals. Next Mannion brings in a house bass line and this is when the track really gets us going. The tune starts morphing into something you might hear Bonobo spin—-a progression of symbols and bells, all while continuing with the vocal sample, which is now uttering “on and on…” like any good electronica song should. But don’t worry, the track never maintains its normalcy because the off beat percussions come right back along with some Doppler effect synths and industrial noise, and you can feel good about being weird again.

On top of making madly good music, Mano Le Tough also throws this hot dance party in Berlin called Passion Beat where he hosts himself as a resident DJ along with his buddy, The Drifter. Hosting other names like Nicolas Jaar and John Talabot, we’ve made this a must-go destination in our electronic dance party geo-calendar. Because that is definitely a thing.

[Club/House] Martin Solveig – « +1 » (feat. Sam White) (Blonde Remix)

We’ve been right in tune with Bristol’s hottest house pair, Blonde,  and their steadily expanding slate of releases for over a year now -and for completely good reason. Since the moment they stormed onto the underground dance landscape with the backing of vaunted dance imprint FFRR, we were hooked on their bouncy, future-tipping take on that epic, U.K. club-house sound. Today, the U.K. power-house (get it?) returns with a tasteful remix of Martin Solveig’s most recent single “« +1 »”, and within its first four-bars we knew we were consuming another beautiful Blonde tune. A peanut-buttery thick kick-drum bursts from the shadows immediately while Blonde’s recognizable pad work and carefully cut vocal chops fill in the rest of the intro. Of course, we wouldn’t be writing about this one if there wasn’t more, and oh is there. Blonde wraps a craftily swung deep-house bassline around understated shuffling hi-hats and booming sub-bass for one of the stickiest hooks you’ll have the pleasure of consuming this month, and when the deft duo lets that original vocal out to play, it’s all hands on deck. Kick off the last day of November with another one of Blonde’s wonderfully executed remixes above, and try not to shake your hips.

[Electronic] Sun Glitters – Always the Same

Luxembourg-based producer Victor Ferreira, aka Sun Glitters, has given the music community some gold over the years. With a knack for chill wave and side-chain filters, Ferreira always brings us a product that is easy on the ears. Having produced with artists such as Steffaloo and Slow Magic, Sun Glitters always delivers us a good dose of chill with every release, and the chill quotient continues to climb with his latest single “Always The Same” off his newest EP Diving Into Reality.

Given the title of the EP we believe that Diving Into Reality is a successful attempt by Ferreira to explore common themes in reality by manifesting them through sound and that’s exciting to us. “Always the Same” is appropriately driven by a side-chain synth wave that sounds like it’ll go on forever. As the song continues you’ll hear a product that sounds ongoing—like it’ll continue on its same course.

But where we see the beauty in this is that when you listen to every element in the song you’ll find that every little sound entails its own course of action that actually does vary from measure to measure. Just like in life, it seems that Ferreira has found a way to make us aware that there is change in the constant. It is all in the details. And the details are pretty beautiful.

Filous talks Touring, Musical Roots, and Working with James Hersey [TMN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW]

Austrian producer Filous is a reminder that age is not a factor of stardom; now a recurrent theme within the musicsphere. He has an impressive repertoire under his belt, amassing nearly 100,000 Soundcloud followers and well over 6,000,000 plays on his catalog. For anyone, let alone an 18-year-old, that is impressive.

For those of you who haven’t experienced his live show, know that the multi-instrumentalist plays effortlessly on stage mixing a combination of backing tracks with several instruments he taught himself. His first tour ever, with RAC, Big Data, and more, is also his first time playing for the public, with his NYC stop being his 6th live performance ever. We had the chance to catch up with him after just that performance, at the legendary Webster Hall.

TMN: How has tour been going so far? I hear this is your first time both on tour?

It has been very surreal for me. It’s my first time touring and playing in the U.S. Touring in a tour bus has been pretty incredible. I’ve been watching music documentaries and following artists for a really long time so now to be in that position myself is completely surreal. It has been awesome too because I’ve been traveling with so many professional people with so much experience and advice to offer, it’s be a really great opportunity.

TMN: Tell me about your roots, how did you shape your particular style?

I’ve been learning instruments since I was 10 years old. The first instrument I [learned] was bass and then after that guitar, keyboard, flute, harmonica etc. We were thinking about how were could do this live, I had the idea of just doing it the way we created the songs, me jamming on the guitar and then creating a beat to it.

TMN: You mentioned in another interview you learned a lot from Youtube videos?

Yeah, I never really had the urge to get a teacher. It cost a lot of money and I didn’t have that money. I just looked up stuff like “how to play the guitar,” or “how to play the harmonica” and such. To have the accessibility to learn those from people who know what to do through the internet was pretty amazing.

TMN: Obviously your age and early success is cited often, did you always see yourself becoming a professional musician?

It has definitely been a learning process. I try to progress all the time and to do better. It has also [been] a lot of learning from other such as everyone I’m on tour with. I try not to think of my age that much because a lot of people are seeing their age as an excuse, like ‘oh I’m 18 I still have all this time left.’ I feel like ignoring that and focusing on where I’m at right now, what I can do, and what my possibilities are to try and cherish that. That’s my goal right now.

TMN: How did you initially distribute your music?

We initially just put the project out on Soundcloud. We didn’t do anything else. One day, we got the idea that there are so many youtube channels out there like Mr. Suicide Sheep, so we just wrote them emails and eventually Le Belle Musique posted a track of ours. Mr. Suicide Sheep showed us that they can give you so much exposure in the internet world. Hypem blogs such as The Music Ninja also started posting our tracks, we then saw Hypem and having blog support is so important as well so we tried to actively pursue that area.

TMN: Where or whom do you draw inspiration from?

I have a lot of inspirations coming from electronic music and acoustic music. Electronic music would definitely be Daft Punk, Deadmau5, The Glitch Mob, Flume, all those people who try to do something new and do something fresh. Those are the people who got me into electronic music.

Before that, I was mainly into acoustic music. Metal before that. I was listening to a lot of Metallica and really dark, dark like death metal bands. After that I got into Jazz; Herbie Handcock, Dave Brubeck, and then big bands stuff. So, I kind of did the reverse music journey by starting with recent music and then going back into time. Then I got really into bluegrass after that like John Butler Trio. Now I’m really trying to combine those influences like with the harmonica and electronic beats and the dance feel.

TMN: I’m a big fan of James Hersey, how did you guys link up?

Crazy coincidence. My sister is like my music scout. Half the remixes that are online are found through her. One day she sent me over like 100 tracks as usual, I listened to them all and they were all really good but nothing was really standing out to me. Then, last track that I listened to was Coming Over, by James Hersey. I got goosebumps, it was a really magically moment. So, I tried to bootleg remix it and after I finished it I sent it to him and found out he’s from Vienna too! Also we found out that my brother went to the same university classes as his brother and they knew each other so eventually we met in Vienna for the first time. We put the “Coming Over” remix online and then started working on “How Hard I Try,” which was the first original we put out.

TMN: Any other collaborations or people you want to work with in the pipeline that you can speak on?

Well, people I really want to work with are Bobby McFerrin, he’s been an amazing inspiration for me. The way he performs on stage and deals with people and music and positivity that comes with it is really amazing. I really love Daughter. Also I just found Melanie Martinez. She’s amazing.

TMN: Anything else big you’re working on / want to share?

I’m just really thankful for the support from you guys and everyone else. I really appreciate it.

The Chill Dojo #158

If there wasn’t enough to be thankful for this week, we’re kicking off the Dojo with two glorious remixes of ‘All My Friends’ in two very different styles. Seeing Wave Racer’s name next to Snakehips brought an instant smile to our faces, and that wide grin remained fixed for every second of this colorful ride. Though this track was already at anthem status, his trademark wavy touch elevates it into another state of euphoria, making it virtually impossible not to belt out the chorus at the top of your lungs. Our second feature from PREP may be just a preview, but the tease of that smooth funk was too good not to include in this week’s proceedings. We know it’s not enough to satisfy, so make sure to head over to Spotify to hear the full thing. You’ll have no such wants with FKJ though, because he once again delivers his stellar brand of feel good groove. He’s never put a foot wrong in his choice of soulful vocals to play with, and this time it’s Selah Sue who receives his vibe-filled remix treatment.

That’s got us in the mood for a beat now, and you can trust Tom Misch to dish up something to ease our cravings. We needed no reassurance of his prolific beat-making skills, but ‘Twinkle Twinkle’ showcases far more than that, with slick sampling, irresistible flow, and a shimmering harp that adds an element of freshness you don’t often hear in the game today. For anyone begging for some Goldlink bars to go with that instrumental, we’ve got the next best thing in the form of an insane ‘Spectrum’ remix from GEOTHEORY. The sweltering groove would get any dance floor sweaty within seconds, but it’s the latter end of this track where things get taken to the next level in an epic procession of chord-slaying.

We’ll give your body a rest eventually, but we just couldn’t resist injecting some energy to start our week off right. Peace out.

Fairchild – Breathless [TMN PREMIERE]

This week always has such a strange feel to it, at least for those of us in the states. Being a holiday week, everything seemingly slows down, giving us the opportunity to focus on more than just the daily grind. With that in mind, we’ve been fortunate enough to dig back through submissions and hand-select gems that deserve some of that newfound time and attention you have. And today’s focus is all about Manchester-based indie rock act Fairchild.

After experimenting for years, trying to nail down their sound, this six-piece teamed up with producer Catherine Marks, who has previously worked with acts like Foals and Wolf Alice. After a two EPs, a double A-side, and some touring through Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, China and North America, the act is now back in the studio and ready to release some more greatness to the masses.

Today’s single, “Breathless” will be available on SoundCloud immediately following our premiere. Boasting an intricately layered soundscape rife with wavering guitar licks, haunting synths, and understated percussion, it carries a powerful persona in a matter of minutes. The melancholy lyrics add an additional memorable edge to the entire experience, leaving us eagerly looking forward to the next listen through.

Make sure to keep an eye out for Fairchild by following them on SoundCloud, Facebook and Twitter. We can assure you that more material is on the way soon.

[Future] SevnthWonder & Deverano – Can I / Maria I’m Drunk

While music aficionados are spending these late-November days at Friendsgivings and being as unproductive as possible in preparation for the holidays, one ninja-favorite has been hard at work, dropping multiple collaborative tracks in the past few days.

Mateus Almeida, known for his production skills under the name SevnthWonder, has been steadily dropping tunes throughout 2015, but this may be his biggest month to date. The first, titled “Can I”, was released mid-month in tandem with Deverano and an up-and-coming producer who goes by the name of Unknown.

In what can loosely be described as Future R&B, “Can I” is the first of two tracks released by Sevnth featuring the rangey talents of Staten Island rapper Deverano. Although only four minutes long, the track displays a key element sometimes lost in the genre: patience. “Can I” doesn’t give an impression of being in a hurry to get to a particular crescendo or hook; this quality is particularly noticeable in part because the same cannot be said for much of electronic music produced as of late.

While the subject matter itself has been covered at length (look no further than Lido & Santell’s Passion Project EP last month for evidence), the stylization of SevnthWonder is still a novelty without seeming gimmicky in the least.

The next release, titled “Maria, I’m Drunk”, and released via Tune Collective is a progressive take on a recent hip-hop hit by fellow Houstonian Travi$ Scott.

With Deverano once again on the vocals, SevnthWonder takes the seven minute anthem and flips it on its head. In scrubbing all evidence of the sometimes over-the-top crooning by Young Thug, Sevnth manages to cut the fat in his version, retaining elements from the early parts of the original song.

By focusing exclusively on the introductory portion – his cover forgoes the bridge and breakdown sections of Justin Bieber as well – SevnthWonder sneaks a fiercely deep bassline under the choruses, creating an end product that is both melodic and extremely satisfying.

Even more recent than these two tracks, SevnthWonder dropped a third track this month, “Capsun”, which we premiered earlier this month here“Can I” is available at ClickDJ, while “Maria, I’m Drunk” can also be downloaded for free at Hive,

[Progressive] ATB – Ecstasy (ARMNHMR & DATHAN Flip)

Here’s a track for some Monday motivation. It’s almost a guarantee that magic happens everytime ARMNHMR and DATHAN go in the studio together. These guys can cook up something amazing, evident in the success of their remixes “Gold Dust”, “Disarm You” and “Secrets”. They decided to join forces once again to put a spin on a major throwback tune, ATB‘s “Ecstacy”, and definitely did it justice.

The infectious melody by the vocals are accompanied by these soaring synth stabs. The dynamic outfit of the track will provide an adrenaline overdose, most apparent in the numerous different drops in the track. If you’re a fan of dance music, this will definitely be nostalgic and refreshing at the same time. It’s intriguing to see progressive dance elements from different times fuse together. Grab this as a free download and show these guys some support!

Colleagues – Talk It Out (Branded James Remix) [TMN PREMIERE]

We first became enamoured with the playful, summery, electro-pop nature of Swedish band Colleagues back in 2013, after we came across their highly infectious tune “Visits.” Since then, they’ve had a myriad of successful releases, and the latest, “Talk it Out,” comes off their much-anticipated debut EP release Visits.

Today we’re excited to bring you a tasty remix of that aforementioned tune, which comes all the way from The Golden Gate City, by up-and-coming producer Branded James. These two acts had previously crossed paths a few years back when James dialed up an interpretation of their track “Parents House.” Since then, they’ve apparently kept in touch, providing us with this groovy little premiere you’re listening today.

Flipping the shimmering synth-pop tune into a lovely house rendition, this San Fran resident has outfitted it with a sultry bassline, danceable percussion, and carefully extracted samples. While the warm-weather vibes from those high pitched iconic synths are gone, we’re still left with a beautiful connection to the original through the pensive nature of the vocal delivery.

Keep tabs on everything Colleagues and Branded James by following them on SoundCloud.

The Chill Dojo #157

What better way to release a super chill remix than all the way from the tropical paradise of Fiji. A lucky few will have been partying it up with Sydney producer Kilter at the Your Paradise festival over the weekend, but for the rest of us, his stellar take on Autograf’s ‘Metaphysical’ will have to suffice as a taste of what would have taken place. Thankfully the groove is so sublime that it’s enough for us to get our own little dance on wherever we may be listening. Still on that summery vibe, Branchez takes us back to what he does best with a slower-paced emotional anthem that is sure to be stuck in your head all week. With a style that is very reminiscent of the flow on his legendary ‘High You Are’ remix, ‘Dreamer’ has all the makings of becoming the same crowd-pleasing success it was only a few years ago.

Anything Odesza has generally been a winner with this year’s music tastes, and while 2015 has had more than its fair share of remixes, we’re still being surprised by some of the gold that is out there. This week Kidswaste dove into the archives to dig out this previously unreleased edit of ‘Say My Name’, and it hasn’t lost a hint of freshness despite its time tucked away. Upbeat synths reinvigorate the energy behind the iconic vocals, breathing new life into a song that will continue to be reinvented well beyond the bounds of this year. We’ll round out this write-up by shining light on a Dojo newcomer in Tonton and his glorious collaboration with WTN3. Well it’s less about us shining light on ‘Try Me’ than it is this future-laced tune grabbing our attention in a remarkable display of colorful sound and blissful beats. Either way, it is well worth a listen or three.

Who said the party ends once the weekend’s over? Peace out.

Hi-Fi Cali – Soulmates [TMN PREMIERE]

TMN is stoked to give you all a first look at electropop duo Hi-Fi Cali’s latest single, “Soulmates.” A direct off-shoot of Chris Bartel’s previous project Bora York, the Minneapolis duo brings us a smooth, downtempo disco track with this release that’ll get you snaking your head to a synth-driven rhythm, funky guitar riff, and finessed bass. After all that action, about half way through the song you’ll get a treat of some ambient butterfly effect tones that’ll take you up and away.

While the highly pleasing falsetto vocals on this track are a close second, our favorite thing about this tune has got to be the way that Hi-Fi Cali creates a perfect symphony of retro synths throughout, all building upon one another with patience and purpose.

This tune is absolutely perfect for fans of electropop favorites Chromeo, Bag Raiders, Holy Ghost!, and even Toro y Moi. Let’s hope their hot sound can get them through those cold winters in Minnesota. Don’t freeze please—we want to hear more.

[Future] Brasstracks – Say U Won’t

There are so many great things to be said about Brasstracks, so it’s easy to sound like a broken record, but their consistency continues to speak for itself on “Say U Won’t,” the first taste of their upcoming EP. In the vein of Gramatik and GRiZ, this duo epitomizes the seamless harmonization of analog and digital with bright horns and snappy drumming that coalesce with adept production into an unparalleled invention all their own.

From covering Drake to crafting an unforgettable remix of Gallant, Brasstracks have found a lane where they’ve jumped from 0-100. Real quick. The comparisons to Chance The Rapper’s Social Experiment are undeniable, which begs the question: When will they work together? Our hope is very soon, because “Say U Won’t” and the entirety of Brasstracks’ discography have manifested into a crucial collection that shows no signs of stoppage in growth and appeal. The biggest draws to their music are a simple. It’s fun. It’s upbeat. It makes you smile. Considering the gravity of recent events and the frequency they’ve been occurring, that might just be exactly what we need right now.

[House] Justin Jay & Friends – Karma (ft. Josh Taylor & Benny Bridges)

Given his already-impressive track record, it’s crazy to think that Justin Jay is only 22 years old. The dorm-room house producer has already put out music through some of the most respected labels in electronic music, toured the world and been a TMN Resident Artist. Today, he launches a new chapter in his career: Justin Jay & Friends. The collective will be a collaborative project that combines Jay’s expertise in unique dance music with live instrumentation and indie vocalists.

Although we got a glimpse on his enormous, Benny Bridges-featuring official remix for Alison Wonderland, “Karma” is the first official, original release from Justin Jay & Friends. Opening appropriately with organic percussion and smooth vocals from Josh Taylor, it quickly becomes evident that this isn’t a run-of-the-mill house tune. Once Bridges’ guitar enters the equation, the song finds an incredible bluesy groove making for a seamless fusion of genres. Although quite different in its sound, the collision of underground dance and indie found on this track reminds us of some of Lane 8‘s work with Matthew Dear and Soloman Grey. This tune is also Justin Jay’s first release on UK label Black Butter and definitely leaves us excited for more. Vibe above.

Champagne Drip Discusses Cereal, Aliens, and New Single [TMN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW]

Following his massive Journey Into The Champagne Sea project with Mad Decent, Champagne Drip returns with a crisp and energetic new single that encapsulates an extensive feeling of escapism. “Moonlight” floats along with a jubilant sense of wonder that crashes out of your speakers like a sonic tidal wave. It’s a testament to the overarching concept that Champagne Drip is striving to emulate, and it’s certainly one that looks to broaden the horizons of the perpetually fickle world that is electronic music. We were lucky enough to have a chat with the man himself, so we figured, since many interviews focused on his former approach of remaining anonymous, it’s time to flip the script and talk about a little ridiculousness with this compelling producer. Don’t miss out on the free download of “Moonlight” HERE.

TMN: Name three things that are always inside your fridge or freezer, no matter what.

Champagne of course… Also I always have kimchi and miso stocked too. Can’t live without fermented stuff.

TMN: What’s the most embarrassing song or album in your collection?

Hmmmm. This is a tricky one because I have so many records that I should be embarrassed of but I’m proud to own them hahaha. Maybe Sheldon Allman’s “Songs for the 21st Centry”. I cringe every time it comes on shuffle and I usually skip it, but it’s hilarious.

TMN: If you were a box of cereal, which one would you be?

I think I would be a box of Freakies. My favorite breakfast cereal… Urkel-Os are pretty cool too.

TMN: If you could score the soundtrack to any TV show or movie, past or present, what would it be?

Oh man, tough question. I really would love to score a movie someday. Blade Runner keeps coming to mind. I would never want to contend with Vangelis on that soundtrack, but that movie is ripe for moody ambient scoring.

TMN: If aliens landed on earth and asked what music is, who would you play them first?

I would probably play Claude Debussy’s “Clair de Lune” since I’m currently obsessed with that piece and used parts of it to write “Moonlight”. If not, I might play them Ween’s “The Pod” just to see what they thought.

Be sure to stay connected with Champagne Drip on SoundCloud, Facebook, and Twitter.

[G-House/Future] Public Enemy – Bring The Noise (Felon Bootleg) [TMN Premiere]

I’ve got to say, nothing quite riles the morning vibe like some hip-hop flavored house music; which luckily for us the London house trio of Archie Ward, George Renwick and James Levey, or Felon as we’ve grown to know them, delivered the perfect remedy for a bit of Thursday afternoon hip-shaking. A few months back we had the distinct pleasure of premiering Felon’s pounding deep-house remix of Toyboy & Robin’s “Save Me Now”, and today the club-made triumvirate is back with another thumping revision; this time a bootleg of genre-defining hip-hop pioneers Public Enemy and their biggest single “Bring The Noise”. Felon checks all of the typical G-House boxes with their latest remix: a pitched down and powerfully recognizable rap vocal, clear emphasis on an insanely catchy and pounding analog bassline, and darker atmospherics, while simultaneously sprinkling a classic house shuffled hi-hat and kick-clap percussion line, and an airy breakdown which all wonderfully flirts with their shifting sonic terrain.

It’s apparent that Felon has long since outgrown their hit “Isla” and have been adding a different piece to their production puzzle with every passing release, and their  Bright Young Things collective, who’s expanding roster features a few more TMN favorites Sebastian Carter & DE$iGNATED, has shown off even more of the trio’s tastemaking ability. As our expectations for Felon’s consistent dance quality continue to rise, they just keep knocking them out of the park. [Give Back] Pegboard Nerds – Pink Clouds EP + Charitable Campaign

Even if we took music out of the equation, our respect and adoration for the Pegboard Nerds would still continue. Taking it a step beyond that, even if we took their warm, friendly, and down-to-earth nature out of the equation, we would still hold them in a high regard. Simply put – these guys embody what everyone wants from an artist. Music and amicable nature aside, they truly care about the world around them. It’s never about flashy cars, insane backstage party videos, or scantily clad women. For the Pegboard Nerds, it’s about music, their fans, and their community. And for that, we tip our ninja masks.

Their most recent display of selflessness is showcased in their Pink Cloud EP, which can be listened to in its entirety below. This five track collection showcases both a different side of the Nerds‘ abilities, yet still gives tastes of what everyone has come to know and love from this Scandanavian duo. This time around, though, all proceeds from this body of work goes directly to Fuck Cancer, a Canadian charity that focuses on the prevention and detection of breast cancer, as well as emotional support for those affected by it.

On top of the EP proceeds, the Nerds are also partnering with our friends over at Cadence & Cause. This is their second campaign with the platform, and once again, they’ve donated a collection of must-have items for fans. Included in their offerings are a set of limited edition Pink Cloud V-MODA Crossfade M-100 headphones, a signed poster/t-shirt combo pack, and some Google Hangout sessions. The majority of the proceeds from these sweepstakes will go also go directly to funding Fuck Cancer.

If you want to pick up any of those aforementioned items, simple click on the impact graph below to head over to their campaign page.

Steven Lee Covers FaderPro, His Musical Family, and the Black Mamba [TMN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW]

Some of dance music fans out there might be in tune with who Steven Lee is, and how much he influenced the scene they’re so heavily ensconced in, but we’re hoping to change that today.

At just 20 years old, Steven Lee had recently moved to NYC for business school, but as we often hear with so many talented musicians, life had other plans in store for this then unknown producer. Working at the #1 dance label in the world, Strictly Rhythm, he partnered up with the legendary producer Albert Cabrera, forming the iconic duo that so many came to know and love. What came out of this newly developed partnership? Only one of the most highly-touted records of all time – “Shake It (Move A Little Closer.” It quickly rose to the #1 dance record on the planet, garnering two Essential New Tune nods from Pete Tong, and a World Music Award nomination.

Since those early days, Lee has continued to produce music on his own, touring the world and playing for highly regarded clubs in the industry. As you’ll soon see, the future holds quite a bit of intrigue, as Lee is continually developing new tunes, as well as helping launch FaderPro, a new platform that should excite every aspiring producer out there.

TMN: Hey Steven. Thanks for taking some time to sit down with us. First up, let’s talk about this new project, FaderPro. Can you give our readers a quick elevator pitch on what it is?

Likewise and thanks for taking the time to hang with me, you guys have supported all my new Steven Lee music, appreciated.

FaderPro goes into the recording studios of the top names and films the production of a record from start to finish with the actual producer/DJ, then provides the same files used to make that record to the purchaser, so they too can follow along and re-create the same record that of their favorite DJ/Producer. We aren’t a tips & tricks company and we trim the fat by giving you the inside track of how the best in the world make their music.

TMN: As someone who has been producing for a long time, what initially sparked your involvement in a product like this? Are you aiming to make the dance world a little more communal, or hoping to inspire kids who are just loading up their first DAW? Or, both?

I would have loved something like this when I first began making music, but I did learn how to DJ and most every skill in life this way, and that is by watching, learning, and then becoming. As a teenageer while working for Strictly Rhythm I use to sit in the DJ booth and watch Erick Morillo & Roger Sanchez DJ and then go home and emulate how they did what they did even though technically I didn’t have what they had, just being in that space and seeing everything in full HD blew my mind and gave me the desire, the aspiration & the drive to do what they were doing. I had an older brother that was better than me at every sport but I still got to see first hand how he achieved things I couldn’t just by watching, then taking those things I learned and applying them to my skill set. Just being in the environment of the best, gives you such an incredible insight that no one else has. By doing what we do at FaderPro, yes, we give kids out there a real shot at learning from the best and then becoming the best. Even the experienced producers that are needing that ‘next level’ kick, this applies as well. The work & the drive we can’t provide you but if you’re going to learn, you might as well learn from your favorite artist. That is what we want to provide!

TMN: Speaking of DAWs, what can people expect? Will the program change from artist to artist, or are you guys setting a site-wide standard?

Whatever the artist uses, is what we teach you. Some are proficient in numerous DAW’s, some are hard core Ableton users. We just shot Roger Sanchez last week and he uses both Logic & Ableton to make his records and that is what we shot. What may be unorthodox for some, may end up being ‘the’ way to work for others. We live in an artist driven world so we want to shoot our DJ-Producers making music the way THEY make their music with no exceptions. We don’t chase an artist on what DAW they’re using, but more, how they’re using it to achieve incredible success in the studio.

TMN: Aside from being a founding member, you’ll also be running some of the courses. You currently have a course where you walk through an edit of your legendary tune, “Shake It.” What can fans/aspiring producers expect from your lesson plan?

Yeah well, “Shake It” was made when I was a teenager but with the help of it being a Hit record and with CR2’s Mark Brown doing annual remixes on the record, it continues to breathe new life into the record. It’s a classic house tune with a lot of knowledge behind it which we know will be helpful to our users. The parts to the record are legendary so we are now about to give them all away so that others can learn the secrets to how the record was made. It’s quite simple honestly but the proper blocks to building any record are in there and with the notion that another Gold record like, “Shake It” may be made from one of our members as a result makes me even more inspired to share these secrets.

TMN: Talk about some of the other instructors you’ve brought on board. How did you go about selecting them?

We don’t call them instructors really, they’re doing nothing different then being themselves in their studio environment re-making a Hit record that they made and with us shooting the entire process. I say that because at FaderPro we’re all artists too and we all have things to offer and we package up that inspiration and provide it to our users. Names on board are Roger Sanchez, Sander Kleinenberg, ILL Factor, Sandy Rivera, we’ve just made our partnership with Toolroom and their artists official which includes, Mark Knight, Rene Amesz, Harry Romero, Weiss, Marco Alys, Funkagenda and more. Mark Brown’s CR2 artists will be on board as well and my co-founder, producer-remixer, Vincent di Pasquale will be teaching numerous courses as well. The phone is ringing all day at the moment and we can’t wait to shoot courses with all the names our users are requesting.

TMN: Alright, stepping away from FaderPro for a moment, let’s talk about your other work. Even though Lee Cabrera is on hiatus, you’re still churning out tunes and playing shows. What tracks do you have coming up that you can fill us in on?

Yeah with the emerging of FaderPro it definitely meant some time off from the studio with our investment dollars coming in and our big launch at ADE but I stay very active and am just finishing my, “TeamWork” album and have collaborations with, Macy Gray, Goldie, ILL Factor and remixes for Jeremih, Oliver Heldens, Miguel and more. Touring a ton and about to launch a new project with best friend, Carl Kennedy as, Lee & Kennedy. We have a ton of new proper house tunes that will be out very soon and already touring a ton together.

TMN: Speaking of shows, we can’t get enough of your mix with Carl Kennedy from your Marquee Residency. Is that monthly slot going to continue into 2016?

Thank You, glad you dig it. Yes, that is exactly where my head is at musically and what you can expect to hear from the Lee & Kennedy team. We are doing regular dates with Marquee and will be heading to all the Marquee venues around the world as well. We’ve known the guys at Marquee for years and there isn’t a better brand out there at the moment. We tour all over the world but reside in NYC so having a home for our friends & fam to come hang has always been the goal.

TMN: Looking ahead into 2016 – aside from a focus on FaderPro,what else is on deck for you? Can fans expect some touring?

Yeah, touring is what keeps me alive and keeps me sane. I start my Asia tour at the end of the month which will include NYE in Asia as well, then head to South America and summer 2016 will be overseas for Europe & Ibiza.

TMN: Before we wrap up, we have to ask a few random personal questions, just to give people a little glimpse past the industry side of things. Let’s kick it off with one of our favs – what was your very first job?

My first job was back home in Oregon where I was born and at 15 I worked for the pizza joint Little Caesars. I think I was 15. I ran the register and didn’t have to get my hands too dirty in the kitchen, but certainly indulged in the free food and always had my boys come in for free pizza.

TMN: Name three things you’ll always find on Steven Lee’s fridge.

Funny, there is only (3) things on my fridge, I’m a bit of a minimal dude 😉 I have 3 black & white photos on my fridge, one is of Marilyn Monroe & Joe Dimaggio looking elegant & dapper, the other is of Andy Warhol and the other is of my father.

TMN: If you could take a class from any musician, past or present, who would you want to learn from?

To be honest, it would be from my mom, my aunt & their brother, my uncle. There wasn’t much TV watching with these guys in the room. They can play every instrument out there; Brass, keys, strings, you name it, they do it and with voices for days. I learned it all from the fam so if I could do it all over again, I’d pay a bit more attention.

TMN: Favorite spots in NYC for bagels, pizzas, and streetside hot dog?

I’m not a big bagel guy but Katz’s deli is where they go in NYC. Pizza is definitely Lomardi’s in SoHo. Streetside hot dogs are only when entering or leaving Madison Square Garden after a Knicks game!

TMN: Last, but not least, if your music were an animal, what would it be?

A black mamba for my boy and the best basketball player on the planet, Kobe Bryant aka The Black Mamba. I make music and DJ like he plays basketball: Fearless, confident & passionate!

Thanks for the time guys!

[Electronic] QUALIATIK – physicality

The wide world of “future” music pretty much can involve anything these days, but QUALIATIK‘s plan of attack involves a highly refined method of expression that is reflective of her current studies in neuroscience and her eager sense of liberating the constraints of tedious and flat music. She commands the entire process, from the production and vocals to the engineering and artwork, and “physicality” already has garnered support that demonstrates her capability as an all-inclusive artist.

Exhibiting elements of drum and bass, this tune touches on a message of transcendence, cutting through the psyche with a calculated path that not only hits home on a complex and higher plane, but thrives on the surface as a clean and pristine production with an attitude of purpose. QUALIATIK has a debut EP in the works, and this is quite the preview of what to expect when it drops some time next year. If you enjoy your music with a crystal clear directive, look no further, because QUALIATIK has you covered.

[Chill] Dream Koala – Synthetic Evolution

In light of the saddening tragedy that happened in Paris, French native Yndi Ferreira a.k.a Dream Koala has put out this unplanned release off of his upcoming EP. Titled “Synthetic Evolution”, this track starts off with ominous keys, followed by his signature vocals that will put listeners in a chilled mood. The lengthy buildup is yearning for the the soaring chorus which takes on quick drums and an beautifully eerie melody. Dream Koala succeeds once again in fusing his indie style with whatever genres he desires to explore.

We could really just appreciate the message Yndi is trying to convey. Released as a free download, “Synthetic Evolution” will be one of many other epic tunes off of Exodus EP that’s coming out December 4.

[Electronic] MIAMIGO – Last Summer

The band Miamigo has been hard at work. Their previous releases have received a lot of critical attention and we are excited to present the group’s newest song. This Brighton-based band just released a track from their new EP, Soda Lime Love. It’s an easy listening jam called, “Last Summer.” The unique instruments, rhythms and crunchy guitar are definitely a signature sound. If you like Indy rock or pop-influenced electronic music you will probably love Miamigo. So listen to “Last Summer” and be sure to check out the rest of the new EP.

[Hip-Hop] LNDN DRGS – Hop Out

LNDN DRGS, a hip-hop duo consisting of Compton emcee Jay Worthy and Vancouver producer Sean House, have been making waves for over a year now with their distinct brand of West Coast rap. Combining elements of 90s G-Funk and neon-80s production with confident laid-back flows, they’ve utilized clear influences to cultivate a niche all their own. Leading up to the release of their first debut project, Aktive, LNDN DRGS have been dropping a steady stream of dope singles. For those not yet familiar, the duo’s latest release, “Hop Out,” serves as the perfect introduction. Falling right into its groovy bounce immediately, Worthy hops on accompanying the colorful production with a smooth, chilled-out delivery.

Aktive drops on November 26th aka Thanksgiving via Fool’s Gold Records. In the meantime, enjoy “Hop Out” above and the video for “Susan,” the previous single, below. Also, fun fact: Jay Worth is the step-brother of alt-pop superstar Grimes.

[Electronic] Whynnel – Murvan

We were first introduced to Slovenian producer Whynnel upon the launch of Heroic Recordings‘ ominous, aptly-named counterpart Villain. “Mitzdi,” the first release from the mysterious beatsmith, established a sonic landscape that finds beauty and relaxation in its darkness. That saga continues with “Murvan,” a bleak but gorgeous composition. The song expands on Whynnel’s under-water aesthetic, which subdues sounds to the point where it feels like they are gasping for air. The true emotion in “Murvan” is driven by its subtle contrasts–reaching the greatest heights when the instrumentation peaks its head out for a breathe. Vibe out to this one-of-a-kind tune above and grab a copy here.

SevnthWonder – Drift (Feat. Capsun) [TMN PREMIERE]

As a producer, SevnthWonder reaches levels of consistency most other artists would be envious of. Considering the steady volume of material he churns out, it’s almost amazing that he’s constantly able to maintain such high standards of quality. His latest collaboration with CAPSUN, “Drift”, is no different. The future bass ditty is profound in its simplicity, as the Boston native creates a lush yet serene soundscape that’ll most assuredly cause all your worries to melt away. If magic carpets did exist–which, let’s be honest, would be pretty sweet–then you have to imagine this would be one of the first tracks on your playlist as you cruise around the world.

“Drift” is the latest single to be released as part of Hebinomichi‘s Vol. 3 compilation, which is currently rolling out daily track releases until the end of November. The 15 track compilation is comprised of original content from the collective’s expansive roster of talented artists and spans across a wide array of genres. Vol. 3 is also set to be a surrealist audio-visual exhibition, accompanied by a series of futuristic visual interpretations by artist Trent Kuhn who took inspiration from the songs themselves as well as images he saw during the Nepal earthquake disaster to create custom imagery for each individual tune. After hearing the full EP for ourselves, trust us when we say the project–which includes appearances from StéLouse, Maxx Baer, Tasty Treat, TIGERBLOOD and even more–is definitely one of the most creative releases from the collective yet. Stay tuned to their SoundCloud channel for the rest of the month to make sure you get your hands on all the goodies.

[Chill] Tennyson – Slipperz

Canadian sibling duo Tennyson haven’t put out much music yet but what they have released has left a lasting impression on the TMN staff. Their jazzy, electronic “You’re Cute” was the very first release in Ryan Hemsworth’s Secret Songs series last year and “Lay-By” remains in steady rotation particularly as the weather cools down. Just in time for winter, they returned this week premiering their latest tune on Jaden Smith’s Beats 1 Radio show.

On “Slipperz,” Tennyson cultivate a playful set of melodies that would perfectly accompany a crib mobile backed by contrasting, booming 808s. As the song unfolds, the listener is taken through an adventurous composition that culminates near the 3-minute mark with a Lido-esque breakdown. Put your headphones on for this one and let it’s warm, fuzzy vibes wrap you up.

Yellow Shoots – More Alive [TMN PREMIERE]

The clock and calendar have it all wrong, as far as we’re concerned. We’re looking at the display in the top right corner of our computer screen as we type, but it can’t be correct. It can’t be Wednesday morning. Why’s that, you ask? Because Yellow Shoots has us feeling like it’s a Friday night, late, lit up by only the faint glow of a few candles around the bedroom.

“More Alive” is the eponymous single to the More Alive EP, and for those of you who’ve been following its path, you’ll know that it’s also the fifth and final single. If you haven’t been tuned in, let us catch you up to speed before you dive in. Yellow Shoots is the moniker for the Pennsylvania-based, multi-faceted, multi-instrumentalist and producer Greg Matthews. As you start to wade into his work, you’ll notice nuances of jazz, R&B, and hip-hop, all of which are tied back to his experiences while studying guitar at The University of the Arts. Since then, he’s relocated to the new musician mecca of Brooklyn and started up the project you’re hearing now.

We’ve included the full EP for your listening enjoyment, but today’s focus is all on the premiere of “More Alive.” Featuring LA-based MC Mayo, this tune is rife with sexuality, both vocally and instrumentally. It features a smooth bassline, pronounced kicks, and a seductive, distorted guitar riff, all of which lie delicately underneath Yellow Shoots alluring vocal tone and lyrics, and a heated verse from Mayo.

Take a listen through, but try not to get too hot and bothered at work. You still have half a day until you can put this playlist into proper action.

[Downtempo] Finding Hope – Wonder

With the clocks swinging forward earlier this month and daylight gone by the end of the work day, ever-present summery house music has begun to lose some of its topical appeal. As setting changes, so too does inspiration.

Enter the sound of winter: downtempo. With roots in ambient, drum and bass genres, downtempo is a more calming style of music. Conceptually, it is comparable to productions by Diversa and Explosions in the Sky.

The latest great downtempo track to grace our Soundcloud feeds, “Wonder”, comes from San Antonio artist Ashton Davila. Formerly of the name Audile, Davila now goes by the pseudonym Finding Hope. Similar to classics of the genre like “Can Do It”, “Mon Amour”, and “Nimrod”, Wonder builds slowly into a powerful melody at the :55 mark. The deep, pleasant reverie continues through a beat breakdown a minute later and does not end until the close of the song.

When I was writing Wonder, it started out as a soundscape and progressed from there… My main focus was fusing the organic elements with the electronic/dreamy side of things. – Davila

Fans of Finding Hope – including us at The Music Ninja – will be keeping tabs on his future productions via his Bandcamp and Soundcloud pages. Listeners can also download “Wonder” at toneden.

Bit Funk – Off The Ground [TMN VIDEO PREMIERE]

We are proud to present a first look at Brooklyn-based Bit Funk‘s music video for his newest single “Off The Ground.” here at TMN this morning.

Call him El Nino– this track is making huge waves in a very short amount of time. The tune has already hit #2 on HypeM and has close to one million plays since its release. The motivating clap track that’s present at the start of the song along with Shae Jacobs’s R&B-driven vocals are a retro electro combo that builds until it drops. The modern electronic sound rushes in with a deep house beat and the commencement of vocal loops, reminding us that this is indeed a club hit. At this point everyone in the crowd is going to be straight boogie-ing. I know we were our first listen. This track’s smooth and well on its way to becoming a dance floor regular.

For some added boogie inspiration, make sure to check out the music video, as well.

[Progressive House] Morgan Page – Running Wild Feat. The Oddictions & Britt Daley (Borgeous Remix)

Morgan Page is a staple figure in the dance music community. Another big shot in the game is Borgeous, who is hopping on tour with Morgan starting January 15th, lasting all the way until the end of February. Aside from that, Borgeous has delivered a big remix of the single “Running Wild” that features The Oddictions and Britt Daley. The light-hearted original was transformed into a lively progressive house anthem by amping up the energy with more striking synths. Borgeous is known for his crowd-controlling creations, and there’s no doubt he adds another one to his discography here. If you would like to hear this played live, check the dates and ticket availability on the tour page. If you’re looking to purchase this remix, then you’ll have to wait until November 27th to do so. However, if you want the original, iTunes currently has it available.

[TMN RESIDENCY] Introducing Our Next Resident Artist: Flux Pavilion

What can we really say in this introduction that could come close to doing this artist justice? We could talk about the endless amount of hits he has put out through the years. We could mention the incredible collaborations, including one with one of our all-time favorite rappers. We could highlight the massive list of performances, both in theaters and at festivals. We certainly could spend some time praising collections of work such as Tesla and Blow the Roof. Yet, even though Flux Pavilion is a household name around the globe, there is something we could focus on and we will.

We’re excited to kick off a month-long feature on this iconic artist because, for us, he represents so much more than just a list of hits and head-banging performances. He encapsulates a movement in music. He elicits an immediate emotional response with every buzzing bass hit and iconic, razor sharp synth. Just press play on the playlist below and you’ll see exactly what we’re talking about. Revisiting songs like “I Can’t Stop,” or “Do Or Die” will instantly take you back to a moment in time when you first heard the track. You know the moment – the one where an uncontrollable smile spreads across your face, your head starts nodding back and forth, and your feet inexplicably start tapping.

As long time fans of this legendary baron of bass, we honestly could gush for days over our adoration. But, instead, we’ll just ask that you enjoy the playlist, and drop back to check out some exclusive content throughout the next 30 days.

[Deep-House] Alcala – What I Want [TMN Premiere]

DJ turned producer Daniel Alcala, who’s become much more recognizable simply as Alcala, first started gaining notoriety over a decade ago cutting his teeth as quite the crafty decksmith, while opening for the likes of Fake Blood, Matt Darey, Viceroy and Yolanda Be Cool. However, Alcala’s star didn’t truly start to shine until a steady output of remixes for artists like Crystal Castles, Givers, Royksopp, Kavinsky, Dragonette, Nightriders and M83 began worming their way through a number of dance industry corners, eventually finding their way to the top of multiple online charts in the process. Today, we’ve got our hands, or rather ears on Alcala’s latest original, “What I Want”, and as the snow and gloom in this writer’s home city of Denver settles in, it’s proving as the perfect atmospheric pick-me-up. “What I Want” rides the contemporary house backbone of a thick, syrupy bassline, shuffling hi-hats, rising pads and deft vocal chops for its first half, but during an excellently executed break we’re hit with the kind of classic house piano that would make Marshall Jefferson crack a smile,  bringing the entire track together in a clean, cohesive and utterly groovy design.

While Alcala’s remixes are the tunes nabbing the rising artist millions of YouTube views, we’re quite in tune with his latest body of work for which our latest TMN Premiere take its name, the What I Want EP which is getting set for a November 20 release. But, until the full extended-play is unveiled stream its title track “What I Want” before anyone else above.

[Indie Dance] The Code – F**K

The collection of musical artists that call themselves The Code have come out with a provocative new single called “F**K.” Their unique style of indie electronic takes from sounds ranging from R&B to dubstep. Although the production is a midtempo four-to-the-floor groove machine, it’s iconic wubs are an example of taking something from one genre, and bringing it to another in a brand new way. This self-release is proof that independently released records can A. be awesome, and B. be successful releases, as this song has gathered over 60,000 plays since being uploaded to Soundcloud. As far as sales go, we don’t have those numbers, but if you would like to add to them, then you may do so on iTunes. Buying music is falling by the wayside, however this is a record that we say is worth the minuscule fee. It’s alluring tones can’t be shaken.

[Denver Giveaway] TMN Presents: Brothertiger w/ Sunboy @ Lost Lake – 11/20

It’s no secret around the TMN squad that Brooklyn multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, songwriter and producer John Jagos and his Brothertiger project have captured a large piece of our hearts over the years. For the past few months, Brothertiger has been dropping a smattering of excellent singles in the lead-up to his third full-length LP, Out of Touch, and to accompany that impending album, the Brothertiger team is smack in the middle of a North American tour. Needless to say, our needle is red-lining with anticipation as this Friday we’ve teamed up with our friends at Lost Lake Lounge and Radio 1190 to present this Friday’s tour stop in beautiful Denver, CO. If you haven’t been following our coverage of Brothertiger in the past few months, do yourself a favor and become acquainted with “Beyond the Infinite” (from the player above), “Wake” and his latest remix of ONANON’s “Drifting” to get up to speed. For fans of any corner of alt, pop and everything between, Brothertiger should without a doubt be one of your go-to acts for consistent production prowess. Brothertiger’s carefully thought-out, art-house R&B disguised in reverb-heavy pop structuring has long since become one of our favorite musical aesthetics in recent memory, and we’re absolutely ecstatic to have him headlining one of our favorite intimate venues in the Mile High City. Rounding out the bill is Denver’s Sunboy, representing one of our favorite independent creative collectives, Moon Magnet Studios. Sunboy’s unparalleled sound blends heavy electronics, delicate analog instrumentation, and intoxicating vocals that sound somewhere between Kevin Barnes and Soft Bulletin era Wayne Coyne; and after getting to catch the four-piece’s recent supporting slot for Gardens & Villa, they’ve quickly become filed under our ‘artists to watch’ tab for 2016. Make sure to get there early for this one Ninjas!

If you haven’t caught on yet, we love giving our readers a chance to come groove with us at every ‘TMN Presents’ showcase, so we’re giving away not one, but TWO pairs of tickets for this Friday’s show. Entering our contest is as always, beyond easy. Travelers – Something I Said [TMN VIDEO PREMIERE]

We’re very happy to debut Travelers‘ new video for “Something I Said” here at TMN. This Los Angeles-based group is creating music that is the fusion of some quintessential indie sounds, and they do it so beautifully in this track. With an opening composed of guitar and vocals that are very reminiscent of another little So Cal success, Young The Giant, “Something I Said” gets the immediate hook around any fan of the beachy, indie sound. As the tune progresses Travelers brings in group backup vocals that take us back to the era of Fleet Foxes where soothing reverb puts a soft spin on the whole chant-like product. Finishing up with a breakdown that switches gears from this happy indie track into a blues-y one, Travelers seemed to have perfectly combined some of our decades’ most appealing elements in indie music. These folks are going places. Safe travels, Travelers.

[Music Video] Fox Stevenson – Comeback

Sometimes Spinnin’ Records surprises us with a really top quality record. A few times within the past year, they’ve pushed singles from Fox Stevenson, a bass act that you wouldn’t really expect to have releases with this label. He’s been a fresh act with them, revitalizing their catalog with dope tracks, including his newest one “Comeback.” Besides creating a boisterous glitch production that he also lent his superb voice to, the crew decided to make a music video for the track. Featuring none other than Fox Stevenson himself, the music video follows a couple individuals leading up to one of Fox’s shows. It’s a tasteful visual that is a nice addition to an extremely fun song. Check the video out below and head over to iTunes to grab the extended mix for yourself.

[Electronic] Imad Royal – Troubles

With a recent signing to Nice Life, Imad Royal, formerly known as Royal, knows exactly what he wants to accomplish. “Troubles” is the second original that followed up his impressive Cycles project from the beginning of this year, and the tune bolsters his trademark mesh of pop and electronic into a short, but sweet package. Stuttering and strong synths sliver beside his massive drum work, which you may notice is similar to some of his side project with SoySauce, and his foray in utilizing his own vocals has become one of the most prominent features of his releases. Imad Royal continues to intrigue, and his journey with Nice Life is set to be exceptional.

His sights are set on the future, his loyalty goes unquestioned, and he prides himself on his friends and the accomplishments they’ve managed to capitalize on together in his lyrics on “Troubles.” It makes a lot of sense, as he has worked with quite a few auspicious artists up to this point in his career, and has even been involved in producing a Panic! At The Disco song. Needless to say, 2015 has been Imad Royal’s year, and “Troubles” gives us a thrilling glimpse into this new chapter that he’s opening up.

[Alternative/Rock] Sunflower Bean – Wall Watcher

Manhattan-based Sunflower Bean has caught our attention with their latest single off their debut album Human Ceremony. Describing themselves facetiously as “night music” in their bio, the track “Wall Watcher” indeed sets a perfect tone for the cool kids jammin’ in the moonlight in an indie daze on your local street corner. You would just want to be their friends. Very reminiscent of the all-hailed Joy Division, the drums in this track give this song an edgy English rock flare. And with the title of one of New Order’s best hits in their album name (“Ceremony”), we’ll really never be able to get away from that comparison. Blessed with some rock-goddess vocals mixed with the perfect amount of reverb, the lead singer adds a delicate touch to the otherwise grunge-y tune making it a great listen for most any ears the entire time. Keep up the good work, Sunflower Bean. We’re looking forward to seeing where this album release takes you.

Tors – Good Times [TMN PREMIERE]

It’s Monday. There’s no way to shake the fact that we’re once again left staring down five full days of work. There is a way to ease the pain, though, which involves a carefully concocted remedy of strong coffee, your favorite set of headphones, and the incredibly infectious indie rock anthem from Tors.

Brothers Matthew and Theo, along with their bandmates Andrew, Jack, and Sam, make up this London-based outfit, which should perk the ears for people who enjoy acts like Kodaline, The Decemberists, and Mumford & Sons. After just one release, many have already taken to their gifted songwriting abilities, playful song arrangements, and well-crafted lyrics, and we’re pretty sure you will too.

With “Fool on the Floor” experiencing notable success over the past four months, it’s now time to focus on the undeniably charming vibes of “Good Times.” The title really says it all, as it encapsulates the toothy-grin-inducing, sing-along nature that listeners experience throughout a memorable four minutes. The nostalgic air that surrounds it makes it immidiately enjoyable, calling back on warm, indie pop tracks we’ve all come to know and love, yet maintaining a fresh and authentic sound.

To help get you singing along with this anthemic tune a little quicker, we’re also pleased to premiere a lyric video along with the song itself. To be honest though, with lyrics like these, you probably would have picked them up without it.

Khary – Ambidextrous (Lege Kale Remix) [TMN PREMIERE]

Rhode Island native Khary‘s lyrical dexterity has never been called into question, but if there’s one thing he has over his competitors it’s his ability to adapt to any set of circumstances, as proven on his most recent single “Ambidextrous”. Sticking with that theme, this brand new remix from Lege Kale switches things up considerably, screwing up the vocals and laying them atop a bass boosted instrumental complimented by some lilting guitar rifts. It makes for a clever, yet fun reinterpretation of the original, though hopefully not the last, as the Swim Team captain has released the a capella for any audacious young producers out there looking to create their own renditions of the tune.

“Ambidextrous” serves as the first single from Khary’s upcoming project intern aquarium, which will be available sometime in 2016; in the meantime you can check out the official visuals for the track below. Also, if you’d like to hear what else Lege Kale has to offer, make sure to follow him on SoundCloud, where you can find even more dope remixes along with some original material as well.

The Chill Dojo #156

After a heavy week of news there is great comfort in music, so hopefully this week’s edition can help to provide the right feelings to get us through whatever hardship we may be facing. An emotional piece from Lendrox has captured our hearts as he crafts beautiful piano and a chill beat to accompany the longing vocals from Noctilucent’s ‘All Alone’. At only 15 years of age, it’s one thing to create such an enchanting reinterpretation of the melodic bass-filled original, but it’s something else entirely to have your work released on MrSuicideSheep. Clearly there are big things in store for this talented youngster. A little further on in years, Grimecraft recently celebrated his 26th birthday in style with a fun rework of ‘Make Me Feel’. Incorporating a number of different quirky influences from slap bass to Zelda samples, this bouncy jam has given us a much needed smile this week.

A Dojo newcomer in DZZ keeps that happiness flowing with a charming song that encapsulates the bright creativity that exists within his mind. Jumping between styles and tempos, it’s hard to pin down exactly what makes this tune so mesmerizing, but there is definitely a uniqueness to it all that can’t help but be admired. It’s equally as difficult to settle on one definition of groove, but as we concluded a few days ago, FKJ is one artist who wields the art with soulful finesse. ‘Better Give U Up’ is just another example of that signature smoothness he brings to all of his irresistible concoctions.

And with that, we’re reminded that despite everything, the joy in this world can never be drowned out. Peace out.
