[Indie Pop] Autumn In June – Take Flight

Here at The Music Ninja, our sole purpose is to dig for creativity – music that we believe will connect with our readers, and expose it. As a result, we never stop searching for the freshest of sounds that result from quality work. So when we were introduced to Autumn In June, we knew it would have been much too selfish of us not to share his music with everyone.

Making his debut on TMN with his latest single, Autumn in June reminds us all of why we fell in love with music in the first place. “Take Flight” resembles a roller coaster ride, as every twist and turn keeps us on the edge of our seats. We say this in a literal sense as every infectious component puts us in a state of euphoria that causes some uncontrollable grooving. Comprised of a vocal texture that melts right into the underlying notes, and a sensual percussion line that fits into every crevice of the track like a puzzle piece, “Take Flight,” will become your newest music addiction.

[R&B] Xavier White X Paul Couture – Life For You

Xavier White and Paul Couture make quite the pair. Their previous collaboration on “Bad Blood” was one of our favorite R&B tracks of the Summer, and now they’re back with another single together. This time it’s “Life For You” that has been released as a free download on Lush Records.

“Life For You” has more of a robust sound than their last song together. What’s interesting about “Life For You” is that it’s structured like a dance record, with the ebb & flow of the build, drop and breaks, but Xavier sings throughout and remains the centerpiece of the record. It’s the perfect mixture of several styles, from R&B, to soul, to trap and beyond. Paul Couture hit another home run with his production work on the single. We haven’t been disappointed one bit with these two, and we hope to hear more work from them again in the near future! They’re truly something special, and they’re on the cusp of really going somewhere with their music. Stream their newest single, and don’t forget to download it for free!

[Multi-Genre] Brig – Summer Melancholy EP

Russia’s favorite pirate, Brig, has made his return to Daily Earfood with his newest EP, Summer Melancholy. Two months ago, Brig had a few single releases come out, but now his full blown EP is here to shake the end of Summer up.

Now that Summer is coming to a close, this is the perfect time for a project by the name of Summer Melancholy. Despite the second half of its name, the EP boasts a tone that is more in line with the current season. Lighthearted synths blaze a trail through four singles that have Brig pushing a more future bass and 8bit style than his usual heavy sound. With the opening song, we’re instantly met with devouring piano chords then quickly move into a bass-driven single that certainly lives up to the fact that it is the title track. “Extreme” comes next with a burst of energy that makes it one of the best tunes off the project. Both “Kingdom” and “Wake Up” are grand creations, but we feel that the first half of the EP is a tad bit stronger than the second half. All four great singles, so don’t be skipping any. Check them out below and if you would like to grab the EP, you can do so for free!

[House] option4 – The Rise Of The CatLord

It’s no mystery that the Mile High City is a huge fan of option4. It’s so overwhelmingly apparent, in fact, that we’ve aptly titled him “The King of Denver Nightlife” in previous posts. His seemingly unwavering presence at any number of the city’s finest clubs each and every night of the week solidifies the fact that he’s a pillar of the community, and now, he’s added another layer into our adoration.

“The Rise Of The Catlord” goes beyond the club-friendly, bouncy, groovy, and downright addictive house we’ve come to know and love from this established artist. This release brings a story to life, one of which takes place in an alternate, Denver-based universe where the Queen City has fallen to the seedy underbelly of crime due to the legalization of marijuana.

My story takes place with a young but promising henchman brutally shot and robbed in broad daylight. A routine money drop for The Safah gone wrong on the bubbling street of Colfax ave.

Weeks before the release, fans were treated to comic book-style teasers that told the CatLord’s tale with clips from his upcoming album and illustrations from his good friend Treasure Fingers. The story, which can be viewed on his tumblr page, is a quick read, especially for those that love Noir fiction. Before you head over to read it, though, make sure you follow option4 on Soundcloud and Facebook to keep tabs on upcoming releases on his album with Sweat it Out / Club Sweat records. It’s already receiving love from heavy hitters like Shiba San, Amtrac, Kidnap Kid, and Treasure Fingers, which means you’ll probably join rank as soon as you lay your ears on it.

Denyse Tontz – USAnxiety (Mr. Kristopher Remix) [TMN Premiere]

Back in late July, People premiered an original single by Denyse Tontz called “USAnxiety” that really struck a chord with millennial listeners. Today, we’re happy to present to you a premiere of Mr. Kristopher‘s take on the single, which will be a part of a full remix EP that is coming soon.

Mr. Kristopher stayed true to the original’s groovy vibe, but he turned up the bassline with a bit more energy, as well as a darker tone. He pays homage to the old-school electro sound that paved the way for a lot of producers. He manages to keep things fresh, despite taking a bit more of a traditional approach to this remix. The result payed off, as it is a song that both electronic fans will enjoy, as well as fans of the original who may not be entirely into the dance music scene. Mr. Kristopher’s accessible creation is a great song that plays off the actual process of anxiety that many individuals feel. Check out the single today, as well as the exclusive free download for his remix of “Sweet Dreams” below.

[Resident Artist(s) of the Month] The Hunna

Album Hero Press Shot

As a person that easily binge watches TV shows, it is easy to get to a point where you have almost seen it all. Or at least, all that appeals your interest. Yet, the minute that you find out the release date of your favorite show’s next season, you suddenly have more purpose in life. Ok, maybe my life is a “little bit” more Netflix-driven than yours, but my point is that finding out when The Humma was releasing their full length debut, 100, gave me just enough rivaling purpose. Introduced through their lusciously euphoric rock single ‘Bonfire’ back in October 2015, capable of filling rooms with their anthemic rock sound, The UK based four-piece grabbed our hearts and ears from the very start. Ten months, millions of Spotify streams later and praised Zane Lowe, Annie Mac and Huw Stephens, The Hunna have captured just more than an audience. They are one of the few bands today that can define their own following as a ‘movement’ and 100 further proves their case.

This brings us to why we are incredibly honored to present the next Artist(s) of the month: The Hunna, as their kicking off their debut album this week. Join us this month as we get to know Ryan (Vocals/Guitar), Dan (Lead Guitar), Jermaine (Bass) and Jack (Drums) and their quest to conquer the world (musically).

[Get Crunk] Friday Party Playlist (Vol 210)

Within the realm of free downloads, this week was huge. Tons of hot up and coming acts came out with fire this week, and even Tiesto dropped a free song he created with DallasK. Not only were there a ton, but for some reason these records were exceptional, even for the producers. Such producers who we tip our hats to in this edition of our Friday Party Playlist are G-Buck, Convex, Jameston Thieves, JSTJR, Dirty Monkey, Rezz and UZ. That’s not all, as there are a handful of other party poppin’ singles from other talented producers as well. Check out all twleve, and take them with you over the weekend. Rest up, party; do what you need to shed off the aches and pains of the week. Most importantly, #danceirresponsibly.

A Lightning Round Q&A with Marian Hill [TMN Exclusive Interview]

DNP_4179

Here at The Music Ninja, we take pride in being solely focused on the musicians we love and the works they create. This mindset has allowed us to bypass the pop culture aspects that many others focus on, bringing our Ninja following the freshest faces and best yet-undiscovered acts as they appear across the web. This massively time consuming pursuit has introduced us to many a fledgling band as they try to find their ways early in their careers. Back in mid-2013, that hunt led us to a diamond in the rough.

Marian Hill, a band who rose to fame on the back of their debut song, “Whisky” is a Philly-raised, Brooklyn-based duo consisting of Jeremy Lloyd and Samantha Gongol. As early fans of their work, it has been exciting watching the band take off and become a successful name in music behind their jazzy-electronic style. While making their second appearance at Outside Lands Music Festival a few weeks ago, Jeremy & Sam were gracious enough to meet up with us while taking in St. Lucia’s performance to talk touring, inspiration, and the road to success.

Life on the Road // All About Outside Lands

TMN: Now that you’ve had some time to reflect on your performance, how did today’s set compare with your show here two years ago?
  • Jeremy: Today was amazing. Last night we played at Rickshaw Stop – which we had played a few years ago – but this show was announced a couple of weeks ago and it sold out in just a couple of days. It was so live and so exciting. Also it’s great because we are just starting to play shows where – our debut album just came out a month ago – we just started to play shows where people know those songs too, and that’s really cool. And today at Twin Peaks, we played at 12:45 so we didn’t know what to expect, but it was a huge crowd and it kept growing.
  • Sam: This city has been really good to us since day one and we really love it here.

TMN: You guys also played at Lollapalooza last weekend, how was this stop compared to that one?
  • Jeremy: Lolla is just the biggest thing I’ve ever seen and its so crowded – we were on the main stage there. It’s so funny for us because there’s only three of us and when we started I was about a mile away from Sam. So here at Outside Lands, it was definitely a little more intimate, but the crowd was equally sized, if not bigger which was really dope.

TMN: What is the next stop after this?
  • Jeremy: We are going on a big fall tour for our album in September. So, were going back to Brooklyn after this to get everything ready. Were going to work on lights, set design, and hopefully a few music videos before we get on the road in September. We’ll be playing more of the album, seeing all our fans again; were going all around the country.

(All Tour Dates can be found here)

Inspiration, Collaboration, and Creative Process

TMN: The debut album Act One came out last month – what was the inspiration for it? What was the process of putting it together?
  • Jeremy: We were writing it for a little over a year probably. And for us, the central thing was just – we started when we wrote “Whiskey” which you guys wrote about – figuring out what our sound was. What the Marian Hill sound is. Because I feel like with where music is now, it is really all about having a defined sound. And finishing Act One to me was the end of that journey and feeling like we really had it. Feeling like we spent that time writing trying to explore every avenue that we could find with where we were at. Feeling like each song is really its own unique world that’s a part of what we do as Marian Hill.

TMN: What’s your creative process for the songwriting and vocals?
  • Sam: It is pretty collaborative – Jeremy usually comes in with the skeleton of the beat, then we do melody and lyrics together.
  • Jeremy: There’s a lot of back and forth and – I really like to let the music come from the lyrics in a lot of ways. There’s a lot of give and take about what leads what. A lot of times it’s about feeling. We’ll say this beat is great we love this feeling, what is this beat about? What is the music telling us?

TMN: Your music has a very jazzy influence to it, what led you guys to that sound?
  • Jeremy: honestly, “Whiskey”. We were doing stuff in different styles, different vibes, and “Whiskey” just connected with people. So we were just like, ‘word, lets follow that’. And there was a really bluesy aspect to the music so we followed it.
  • Sam: I loved it because the beat was so minimal. I didn’t know what to do with it at first but it was sort of one of the first moments where I really felt myself as a vocalist connect with a beat on that level and really found a home in a way.

SWAY

Marketing Gurus

TMN: How long have you guys been making music together?
  • Jeremy: We have been… well in middle school we knew each other, we were friends. We were doing stuff separately, but not really together. But when we were in college we started getting together and toying with different ideas, but even then it was super casual. Really, once “Whiskey” took off, things got serious. We started making more songs. We were getting all of these emails from labels being like “when can we come see a show?” “where is more music?” and we were like “we have a demo of one other song so…”

TMN: It’s interesting how you launched from having just one single song to touring nationally.
  • Jeremy: Yeah it is, it speaks to the blog climate and how you can just see if something connects. It’s like a litmus test and then you can build around it.

TMN: What was the collective experience with the marketing of your sound? Did the press and publicity come easily?
  • Jeremy: Before we released “Whiskey” I did a tedious hunt through Hype Machine for songs in the same scale as what we were doing and found the blogs covering them and would just send submission emails. Then I wrote emails to all of these blogs and sent separate emails trying to get our sound out there. Luckily three blogs, blahblahblahscience, Best Fit, and Sight of Sound, published the song. From there we got some buzz for a week, and from there a UK publicist came on to help get us off the ground, and from there we were moving.
  • Sam: we love The Music Ninja, you guys were one of the first to cover our first song and we really appreciate that. That’s literally why we are here.

one-time-600x600

New Tunes on the Horizon

TMN: I know you just put out a huge project, but do you guys have anything else in the pipeline to be released this year?
  • Jeremy: Yes, there is a cover coming out soon with a compilation; it’ll be out this month. We have also been playing several collaborations with different artists, having fun exploring different things now that we got the album out of our systems.
  • Sam: we also have a song with Sway that’s going to be in this ad campaign, which we can’t say yet, but be on the look out its going to be very sexy and cool!

down

Fan Favorite:

TMN: Is there anyone you guys are excited to see here [at Outside Lands]?
  • Sam: I feel like we have to see LCD Soundsystem while we are here. They’ve followed us around for four festivals and I have yet to see them, so it is definitely time.
  • Jeremy: honestly, I need to look at the schedule so after this I’m going to go sit down and figure out who I’m going to see next.

Wednesday Workout Playlist [Vol. 8]

We are smack in the middle of festival season, and the anticipation continues to build as we keep looking back at those insane lineups and the final phase announcements. We can only imagine how incredible festivals like Sun City Music Fest, Electric Zoo, The Meadows, and Something Wicked and way too many more to name are going to be. With those incredible lineups comes brand new releases from the attending artists, teasing us with music that we know is going to blow us away when we see them perform live. So, this week we curated a playlist to exposé some of those fresh releases to get that festival adrenaline kicking.

[Electro House] Warez – Up In The Air

Warez are on a mission. The Charlotte duo have been putting out some of the best bass music you are going to find, all while keeping fans guessing with their fresh sounds. They can tear up any genre, and they aren’t afraid to do it. Most recently they took on electro with their original “Up In The Air” that they released for free.

“Up In The Air” is, no doubt, a single for the Summer. It’s call for fans to put their hands up is something that has become synonymous with mainstage DJs, but Warez don’t water down this single like many of the hands-in-the-air DJs do. Instead, they bring some heavy basslines that call more for headbanging than getting your hands up. That’s certainly true for the second drop, that has the duo switching up the pace. We could have had this single a year ago, but do to sampling, we’ve had to wait. Now, we get it as a free download that will find itself somewhere near the top of many of our Summer playlists.

[House] filous & MOUNT – Emelie feat. Buster Moe

What did you do by the time you were eighteen? Did you reach #1 on Hypem like filous? Probably not, but not everyone can be Matthias Oldofredi. After a year long break from releasing originals, filous is back with yet another collaboration with the Austrian producer MOUNT, as well as Buster Moe. Ultra Records backed “Emelie” and dropped it on the world last week.

“Emelie” is an acoustically driven house single that doesn’t really sound like electronic music at all. With performances shifting towards the live realm as opposed to Djing, it’s no wonder trailblazers like filous are making that shift with their productions as well. This single is one that could easily be played out live, but fans can enjoy it still if a DJ played it on the decks. filous, MOUNT and Buster Moe came together to give fans something different, and each of their talents shine. Buster’s vocal is something to be treasured. With filous back, the rest of the year and the next can be incredible as far as dance music is concerned. Stay tuned for what’s to come, but in the mean time, get a hold of “Emelie” today.

Hoody Time – …to be reckoned with (Official Music Video) [TMN Premiere]

Los Angles emcee Hoody Time is bringing more than just any old rap project to the internet. He’s bring ripe beats, hot lyrics (actual lyrics, not just mumbling) and art to anyone who’s willing to dive into this rich chasm of creation. He’s already released an EP, a handful of collaborations, and now he’s here with a massive music video for his single “…to be reckoned with” that you will view first here in the dojo.

After watching this music video for the first time, we knew we had to jump on it for a premiere. There’s so much going on in it, you’re going to have to watch it at least a few times before you catch everything. Technically, it’s a lyric video, but it’s much more that just that. Hoody Time went a head and put together a true visual art piece that took a ton of time and effort. The result is worth it, as it expresses Hoody’s brand and creative direction nearly perfectly, if not perfect. From memes, to snacks, to movies, to games, you’ll find a bit of everything packed into this extraordinary video.

Benny Benassi on Danceaholics, “Cinema,” and Staying Healthy on Tour [EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW]

TMN: Hey Benny! First off – thank you for being a part of our Residency program. It’s an honor to have a legend like you onboard. Let’s kick things off by talking about Danceaholic, which is currently smashing up the charts. Talk to us about how you approached this project as a whole.

BB: I’m very fond of the instrumental track “Danceaholic” which lends its name to the whole album because it takes me back to my roots and projects me forwards at the same time.
The album is a bigger project of course. It’s a mixture of tracks that were already released and brand new material, so it’s a kind of a bridge between the last four or five years and where I’m going!

TMN: You have an eclectic group of artists with you on the album, including singer/songwriter legends like Chris Brown and John Legend, as well as a nice collection of other producers. How did you go about selecting who you wanted to work with?

BB: I work first and foremost collaborate with my cousin Alle Benassi. He’s my musician and producer. But I really love working with different collaborators. Chris Brown is such a great artist. Everything he sings just comes to life and is amazing. Since working together on “Beautiful People” we have an artistic relationship and always feel free to send ideas to each other, that’s how ‘Paradise’ came about.
As for John Legend I met him through a mutual friend of Alle and I, Jean Baptiste, in LA, who was working with John at the time, then we performed together at Coachella and we just knew we’d collaborate on the new album.

TMN: Along with the album, you’re also doing a contest where fans can limited edition headphones, signed posters, and more. All they have to do is post a video of themselves dancing with the hashtag #Danceaholic. Have you picked up any new dance moves from your fans?

Yes, it’s fun… I like the idea of being “addicted” to dancing but in a light-hearted way, so we developed this whole concept with trailers and now anyone can make a film on his or her smartphone while dancing unstoppably in an unusual place. Maybe it’ll become a craze! Everyone is invited to play along with us and make a Danceaholic video.
I’m always on the lookout for new dance moves ;)

TMN: Let’s take it back before the albums, fame, and millions of fans. How did you get into music? Were you classically trained?

BB: My earliest inspirations were eighties electro-pop. I started my career as a house deejay in a club near where I lived. Alle is a classically trained musician and when he started making music with me, he had a weak spot for techno music. We learned our craft in a small town in northern Italy, Reggio Emilia, which had an amazing output of Italian house productions, so there was already a scene present. “Satisfaction” was the watershed.

TMN: You shared some artists that inspired you throughout your career, which included Depeche Mode. Do you feel like electronic new wave artists like them helped pave the way for your passion to produce dance music?

BB: To some extent, yes. Perhaps the biggest inspiration to make dance music was Giorgio Moroder, though.

TMN: As someone who’s been in dance music for so long, what’s it been like witnessing its global takeover?

BB: It’s great, it helps the music evolve, things are opening up. It’s just making dance music mainstream. I think there is a lot of great dance music still being made that I think I have a lot of different genres bubbling in the underground, it’s like fashion, it all comes around again eventually. It has grown and developed, that’s really a good thing. It’s become bigger and better for everyone. It’s brilliant. It means the music reaches more people – that’s a good thing for everybody. What’s interesting is how it sounds different when it comes back. Think of the new tropical house wave. Same but different…

TMN: Speaking of dance music’s global appeal, one of the people who helped the momentum was someone you worked with very early on in his career – Skrillex. Was his “Cinema” remix official from the start, or did it start off as a bootleg, eventually getting cleared?

It was official from the start. He was still fairly underground and he popped into our label, Ultra, in New York. They asked him if he wanted to remix Cinema. The rest is history! I love Skrillex, I love that remix and I am so grateful he made it.

TMN: You’ve played all over the world, including some of the most legendary festivals. If you had to pick one, what would be your favorite venue?

BB: That’s impossible to say! I have a few favorite places… Most festivals, Pacha in Ibiza, Ruby Skye in San Francisco and Ministry of Sound in London.

TMN: And, is there a venue you’ve yet to play that’s still on your “bucket list?”

BB: Not really! But I’m sure there are some new great venues I haven’t been to yet. I think in the 15 years I’ve been touring, I’ve played in most of the established ones!

TMN: Before we wrap up – what’s on the horizon for you? We have to imagine there’s a healthy tour around this album?

All my tours are healthy because I eat well and go running 😉 Joking apart, I’m touring the album!

Everything is Green – Totally Sober [TMN PREMIERE]

It’s only Wednesday, but I’m already dreaming about an ice cold, fruity cocktail, the sun’s warming rays, and a comfy chair on my back deck. Part of the reason I’m in this mental oasis is due to the stresses of another stacked week. The other part is thanks to my recent discovery of this glowing, psychedelic tune from Monterey-based Everything is Green.

Coming off their upcoming album, Sweet Teeth, “Totally Sober” is another one of those songs that twists you up with an interesting juxtaposition. Musically, it’s a jovial, subtropical, alt-pop offering that feels perfect for the closing weeks of summer. Lyrically, it’s a bit more intense, telling the story of a relationship delving into sobriety, and the subsequent effects.

Totally Sober at its core is a love song about two people growing up together and figuring out each new step in life together. One of these steps dealt with particularly in this song is sobriety and how that can effect a relationship for the better and for the worse. It’s a pretty straightforward song about a very complex issue that I think a lot of people (especially those in their late 20’s) are dealing with.

With that in mind, I might have to switch that fruity cocktail out for a glass of iced tea.

If this is the first time you’re hearing about singer, songwriter, and producer Nick Pappageorgas (the sole member of Everything is Green), we’re pretty sure you’ll feel the need to keep tabs on him from here on out. You can do so by following him on Facebook and Soundcloud.

[Electronic] Chet Porter ft. Chelsea Cutler – Stay

Anytime a new artist joins the Foreign Family Collective roster, we simply cannot contain our excitement. The new addition is none other than Chet Porter, the Canadian producer who we sat down with a while back to talk about the upbringing of his sound following his release of “Awakening”. Chet teamed up with singer Chelsea Cutler for “Stay”, the 11th installment by the collective behind duo Odesza. Incorporating a mellow and joyous melody with Chelsea’s dreamy vocals, Chet manages to create another unconventional track that utilizes the style of storytelling. The buildup leads to synth bursts that create an ecstatic vibe that resembles the sound of Porter Robinson. It’s definitely a potential anthem everyone could get familiar with.

Joining the likes of Jai Wolf, RÜFÜS DU SOL and Big Wild, Chet Porter deservedly belongs in the FFC fam. Make sure to catch him at a show near you as he’s going on a North American tour in fall (details coming soon). Trust us – you don’t want to miss out on one of the biggest up and coming artists of 2016.

When we premiered “Stars” from New York-based Future Generations, we were already looking forward, past its release, to the inevitable remixes to follow. [Music Video] Kai Straw – Don’t Tread On Me

Back in April we shared with you an album by the name of Toothpick from an artist named Kai Straw. The ten track LP was solid from beginning to end, making it hard to pick a favorite. That’s when you know it’s special. One of the ones that did stick out to us though, was “Don’t Tread On Me.” Today, we’re happy to share with you a music video for that single.

Kai Straw is a man of many talents, which is why he went ahead and directed this incredible video himself. “Don’t Tread On Me” in its visual form is more than just any old music video. It tells a tale, and portrays a situation that millions of women find themselves in every year. Domestic violence is no joke. It’s a hot topic that can turn people away in an instant, but Kai handles it with grace and attention to detail, always keeping in mind his respect for anybody who is being affected by this problem. Not only that, but he delves into the complexities of abusive relationships all while creating a visual art piece that you’ll watch again and again. We already have; now it’s your turn.

[Electronic] Meeka Kates – Wildfire

The European imprint Boogie Angst is back with another amazing release, this time from Meeka Kates. The Netherland’s creator brings his single “Wildfire” to the table, and you better believe it’s a hot one.

Meeka Kates fits with Boogie Angst perfectly, as each party shares the same love of cool, laidback electronic music. With “Wildfire” we get a fun house record that takes from both pop and R&B. This single is not just a simple song either, as it signifies the coming of a debut EP from Meeka, which will be entitled just as this song is, Wildfire. Although this is the only song on his Soundcloud, the full EP is available for purchase currently. On that EP, you will find two other originals, as well as a remix. “Wildfire” as a single should get you interested, as this one is catchy as can be. If you’re not singing it by the end of the week, you’re just not having a good week. This is as good as it gets!

[Video Recap + Announcement] RÜFÜS DU SOL Releases Phase II of North American Tour

It’s been a great year for RÜFÜS DU SOL. Since the release of their debut album “Bloom” in January, the Australian dance group has taken over festivals worldwide and is quickly rising to become one of the most talked about electronic act of 2016. [Festival Review] Outside Lands IX : Revisiting the Most Memorable Acts of the Weekend

OSL7In continuing to build on the foundation laid nine years ago, Another Planet Entertainment has once again outdone themselves; the final product being yet another successfully executed Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival. The 2016 version – keen on replicating the successes of previous iterations – was calculated in its approach, careful not to break the trends and quirks that have made it such a mainstay to the community.

Instead, APE kept what has worked and improved upon it; meaning deeper lineups, aesthetically more impressive sound and lighting productions, finally allowing payment via RFID-enabled festival wristbands, and a fair amount of side stages to keep all wandering pseudo-bohemians well occupied. Unfortunately, along with the quality improvements also came a pretty substantial price adjustment – putting on a nationally recognized festival is big business, after all.

Those willing to stomach the uptick were treated to an especially diverse lineup ranging from saxophone playing acts like Kamasi Washington and GRiZ, nostalgia-inducing pop rock outfit Third Eye Blind, platinum (and featureless) hip hop artist J.Cole, EDM prodigy Zedd, the Jack-of-all-trades Garratt, and rags to riches rapper Anderson .Paak.

Favorite Headliner: LCD Soundsystem (Lands End)
  • While I admittedly wasn’t a LCD Soundsystem fanboy during their heyday, I was intrigued to see them making a return to the festival circuit this year. Having had a chance to see them from afar at Coachella, I knew I needed a better vantage point to really assess their live set and got just that at Hellman Hollow last weekend.

  • Closing out the first night, James Murphy and Co. proved the timelessness of their avant-garde, punk-infused electronic jams. Extending the most addicting grooves from their catalogue, LCD Soundsystem made it impossible not to dance–from getting down to “Dance Yrslf Clean” to head-thrashing on “Losing My Edge.” For me, “I Can Change” was the song that stuck the most from the entire weekend. – Ninja Ashraf
Next Up: Anderson .Paak & The Free Nationals (Panhandle)
  • Anderson .Paak has been the act to see this year, and rightfully so. His stop at the Panhandle stage on Saturday gave fans a somewhat rare opportunity to catch the rapidly rising star on a more intimate side stage. Delivering on the hype that surrounds him, Paak and his band, The Free Nationals, ran through their already seemingly endless catalogue of tracks opening with the high-energy “Milk & Honey.” As the show continued, .Paak showed his versatility, playing the drums while singing/rapping flawlessly. If you haven’t had a chance to catch him yet, we’d definitely recommend doing so before he’s selling out stadiums. – Ninja Ashraf
Sunset set of the weekend: Rufus Du Sol (Panhandle)

Rufus6____

  • Rufus Du Sol were another act that felt a bit bigger than their time / placement. However, those that did make it to their set were treated to a breathtaking experience. Bringing their colorful house and electronica to life with a full band, the Australian three-piece brought equal parts dancefloor vibes and emotional vigor. Their 10-minute masterpiece, “Innerbloom,” along with fan-favorite “You Were Right” couldn’t have been much more prime for the Panhandle Stage as dusk set in. – Ninja Ashraf

Sunday Funday

Grimes1

Lapsley1OSL festival-goers of the frugal variety – and honestly, who could blame you, with 3 day GA tickets going for over $400 this year – were seen crisscrossing Hellman Hollow while sporting single-day bracelets all weekend. Those looking to get the most for their hard earned money (in terms of quality performers, that is) chose Sunday as their big day out. Compared to the previous two afternoons and based on the long lines streaming in from the N Muni, it was obvious that the majority of you were in agreement regarding the superiority of Sunday’s schedule. It certainly didn’t hurt that Sunday was also the lone sunny day, had the best overall set, most underrated set, and the best early set.

Best Overall Set: Chance the Rapper (Lands End)

Chance8_____

  • Flanked by Donnie Trumpet of The Social Experiment, famed Chicago lyricist Chance the Rapper put on the performance of the weekend. Even with a strong pool of hip-hop acts including Vince Staples, Miguel, and Big Boi, Chance took to the main stage and upstaged his peers. Playing a healthy dose of his critically acclaimed works Acid Rap and Coloring Book, he mixed in hijinks and witty banter with crowd-pleasing jams.

Chance4

  • Leaving no stone left unturned for the packed crowd, Chance also recited his feature appearances on works like “Baby Blue” and “Ultralight Beam”. With a few days of hindsight to reflect, I can rest easy saying this was one of the best hip hop acts I have seen in the past few years.

Most Underrated Set: GRiZ [DJ Set] (Stubhub Sound Stage)
  • While Chance was impressing over at Lands End, GRiZ was holding his own woodwind-electronic jam session at Twin Peaks. Fortunately, the decision to skip his performance in favor of Chance was made easier by his announced DJ set on Sunday evening. Snugly tucked between the new Beer Lands setup and the OSL-staple Heineken Dome was a new arrival: The Stubhub Sound Stage.

Griz1

  • Playing a heavy hitting, adrenaline rush of a set, GRiZ turned the undersized tent on its head and gave fans an especially personal experience with one of the bigger artists in his field. By the time his performance was winding down, those of us looking for the exit were shocked to turn and find heads bobbing at attention for no less than 40 yards back from the tent entrance. The ninja crew will be interested to see what type of showing Stubhub puts on next year, and if they can put up a challenge to the Heineken Dome as the new all-day dance haven.

Best Early Set: Oh Wonder (Lands End)

OW2

  • As an act that has been covered over a dozen times on our site, Oh Wonder was well worth the lost hours of sleep to wake up early and make the trek across town. The London duo, pegged as one of our “Top 4 Acts before 4” in the preview post, lived up to our high expectations in playing a set filled with the familiar tracks released over a yearlong album reveal.

OW1

  • Mixed in with their soulful set of original works were a few covers, including a vastly improved rendition of The Weeknd’s “The Morning”. For those who missed Oh Wonder, make sure to catch them on their return to the US at either of the Symbiosis or Life is Beautiful music festivals this fall.

Most Fun Band to Hangout With : Marian Hill

DNP_4179

  • Fresh off of a stopover at Lollapalooza’s main stage and just before departing on a September kick off tour in support of Act One, the Ninja team caught up with Marian Hill, a pair we’ve been covering since the beginning. Jeremy and Sam were gracious visitors to the Bay, sharing their experiences and who they were most excited to see perform. Stay tuned for more on our encounter in a soon-to-be released Q&A session.

Best Food Vendor: Straw

Straw2

  • San Francisco is a self-proclaimed city of foodies. Outside Lands has long since tried to capture the identity of its host city, upping the ante with food, wine, beer, and local art installations each year (including a $22 lobster roll, if you’re into that type of thing). On the eatery trail, there was a new “Outside Clams” set up to go along with mainstays likes Humphrey Slocombe, Spicy Pie, Pica Pica, and Senor Sisig.

Straw1

  • Topping the list of tastiest / most interesting things seen ingested this year was the gluttonous Donut Bacon Cheeseburger courtesy of Haight’s Straw restaurant. Exactly as it sounds, Straw is a beef patty with cheese and topped with bacon, smushed between two enormous glazed donuts. Along with a side of sweet potato tots and blackberry bbq sauce, Straw’s burger had the value, quality, and sugar content to keep our feet moving.

Festival6

 Best Overall Stage: Twin Peaks
  • As a bit of backstory, we have been going to The Park each summer for this festival since before the Warriors learned how to shoot 3’s. Every single year – this one being no different – the majority of the most talented & entertaining acts end up on the far side of that dusty hill at the Twin Peaks stage.

TwinPeaks1

  • Additionally, Twin Peaks is the home to the counter-headliner each night, while also (usually) housing the best up-and-coming acts from the past few months. It is not at all uncommon for Outsidelanders to make a beeline straight from the entrance, under Ranger Dave’s gaze, to Twin Peaks and slowly make their way towards the front as the crowds ebb and flow elsewhere throughout the day.
  • This tactic usually pays off for the younger demographic, who generally prefer to end their nights with previous Twin Peaks headers like Flume, Justice, or Skrillex over traditional acts such as Metallica, Elton John, or Stevie Wonder. That’s not to say I would be the type to park it at one stage all day, but if there is any festival/stage pairing to have that approach and still feel satisfied with your day, this is the clear cut winner.

Best Background for your Instagram Photo: Any of the murals curated by Marcos LaFarga

Marcos3

  • To the relief of many OSL veterans and the surprise of many first timers, artwork of various styles returned in full force, dotting the polo fields. The unofficial resident artist, SF-based Marcos LaFarga was called on once again to bring back the billboard-sized murals that made their debut in 2014. Depicting imaginative and entertaining scenes combined with a clever idiom or proverb, LaFarga’s works have made countless appearances on our IG timelines. (@marcoslafarga)
