[Hip-Hop] Mike G – Burton

Mike G is celebrating the holiday season in his own way with an homage to the great creative Tim Burton. Not only is the single a tribute, but it’s a launching point for Mike’s upcoming project Exile that will be coming in 2019.

“Burton” as you would imagine, is a dark, brooding single. From the start the instrumental sets the tone and Mike comes in with his cool, collected rhymes. The California to Arizona duo Chochos has come forth with their debut release. They’ve launched with a remix of Codeko’s “Woke Up” and released it as a free download for new fans to grab if they wish.

From the start the duo establish a fun tone with some wild sounds and bustling percussion that lead us into the heat of the party. Chochos went all out for this party popping flip. It is reminiscent of the festival-centric electro house from the big room era. These two bring that sound forward to now and stamp their feet down firmly as an act to watch out for in 2019.

[Festival Preview] Mayan Heart Festival -Tikal, Guatamala – 12/20 – 12/23

The first annual Mayan Heart Festival is set to take place this December (20th-23rd) for the Winter Solstice at the Tikal Pyramids at Guatemala, with artists ranging from Desert Dwellers and Kaminanda to soothing sounds from the likes of Deya Dova and Liquid Bloom.

I couldn’t think of a better reason to pack up for Christmas and spend it abroad, enjoying a soulfully curated line up, hotel after parties, workshops, yoga, and a fire ceremony with the local Mayan natives that have been practicing it for millennia. Ahead of our trip, I sat down with Amaya, the founder of this one-of-a-kind festival.

TMN: Amaya, so happy to be talking with you about this unique festival I have heard so much about. I would like to dive into the obvious question, what will people expect for a festival experience at such a unique location as the Tikal Pyramids in Guatemala? Where will the stage production and musicians be?

A: IT IS HARD TO DESCRIBE MAGIC! We are working on creating an experience for the Main Event On the Solstice/Full Moon of December 21st which is the Maya Fire Ceremony. There, you will NOT see multi-million dollar technology, million watt sound systems or robotic lights!! People who are present on December 21st in Tikal will experience the highest of all technologies, the technologies which built the pyramids which “modern” science can’t figure out to this day how it was done!! You will experience The MAYA technology. On December 21st we have a very special alignment which is the Solstice with a full Moon and an alignment of the Star System Pleyades with the Earth. This combination along with our open hearts and intention will open the door for anyone to significantly affect their future and that of the planet.

TMN: With so much intention behind an event like this, what type of audience do you expect? Will there be a large electronic music crowd, or more of a yogi and Burning Man-centric audience?

A: This event will bring the Bird Tribes, the Rainbow Warriors and as we will see, these are peoples from every corner of the planet and all walks of life. We have already people coming from Austria, Brazil, France, Colombia, Costa Rica, Portugal, Australia, Canada, Africa, among other places.

TMN: As a first year festival, what do you see this event evolving into for upcoming years as the rise of destination festival and the desire of unique experiences continues to increase?

A: Well, interestingly enough, it is already evolving, there is a very real palpable magnetic energy which the name Mayan Heart is creating. We are already confirming event collaborations with major producers. So far, we have November 28 with our Mayan Heart Yoga Party in Costa Mesa at TIME nightclub. November 30th, we’ll be in San Francisco at ONEdome, which is a brand new state-of-the-art, immersive experience event space and on December 15th, we’ll be in Santa Fe, New Mexico at the amazing Meow Wolf! This has been a totally organic birth for these events, sprouted with such high vibrational intention in such a short period of time. One of our key signature events is the Cacao Ceremony which is an integral part of everything we’ll be doing.

TMN: What would be your biggest ask of all the passionate music lovers that want to be involved in a mission driven project? What can they do in their local community or just by themselves to get more involved?

A: I would like to inspire everyone to dive deep into the mysteries–to begin to remember who you truly are which is a soul having a human experience. This is the way the Maya lived and live now. It brings freedom to everything you do. ACTION!!! This is the word which is being communicated. It is great to meditate and do yoga, and now the universe is inspiring everyone to take ACTION and may it be always in LOVE. It begins with the self, then our light will shine and others will notice and will want that too. At the local level these are the initiatives:

1. Buy your food from farmers markets as much as possible.

2. Host clothing swaps, you’ll be surprised the amount of cool stuff your friends have that they never wear and it always turns into a fun party!

3. ENERGY… your money is energy, spend it as much as possible by/between you and your friends projects, support your local artists, vendors, alchemists.

4. You must throw away your TV, this is great poison to the mind. Do not sell it, you must 100% throw it in the trash.

TMN: I have also heard talk of Mayan Heart joining forces with another growing Guatemalan festival- Cosmic Convergence.

A: YES! we are so blessed to be offering together with Cosmic Convergence a Maya Ambassador training which is an expedition with Desert Dwellers to some fantastic places, we are additionally co-creating many spaces and supporting each other with logistical suppory

Singaporean production trio Trouze have been working their way up through out the dance world, collaborating with Sam Feldt, and releasing on Armada music, though it hasn’t always been easy, and it’s this journey they share on their latest, “These Streets,” in collaboration with Brandyn Burnette (aka EMAN8). The group shares:

‘The essence of ‘These Streets’ is about how one’s dreams and life should not be restricted by circumstances’ says Ee ‘Hence the lyrics ‘these streets will never define me’…The streets where one grew up should never constrain or hold you back.’ 

With them a being a first for an Asian act in the dance world, one can understand that looking back on the journey, and where they came from has to be an inspiring.

Vern Matz – Tiny Nuclear Reactor [TMN PREMIERE]

With a nostalgic, melancholy vibe, “Tiny Nuclear Reactor” is seemingly the perfect accompaniment to my dreary weekday drive to the office. It’s grey and subdued, but still has enough nuanced fun to it pair up nicely with a thermos full of coffee, fumbled around with through a pair of pilled wool gloves.

Maybe it’s those 90s vibes that have me thinking of a brisk Seattle day. It’s not hard to hear nods to Ben Folds or Deathcab for Cutie, what with the casual vocal cadence and soft guitar strums. It should be noted that while this feat is often emulated, it’s rarely effective. That’s not the case with Vern Matz.

Made up of three former Yale Students, this trio showcases a maturity in both songwriting and execution. “Tiny Nuclear Reactor” is the perfect example of that, bringing you a warming simplicity, done so in a way that’s carefully thought out.

HighSchool Jacob – Nobody But You [TMN PREMIERE]

LA-based HighSchool Jacob has been making some waves as of late, releasing a handful of tracks in only a few months time. It’s not hard to understand the magnetism to this curious alt-pop act. His style is truly unique, which is getting increasingly more difficult to say anymore.

“Nobody But You” is a testament to his talents, and the most recent release that grabbed my attention. Lead in by soft, humming synths, and a warm, treated vocal, this fresh single doesn’t take long to build up intrigue. A vocal harmony wanders in next, brought in tandem with some spattered percussion, eventually building to a big, beautiful, choppy lead synth. The eventual crescendo is powerful, spiraling upwards until another emotional breakdown.

When I wrote this song, I wanted to experiment with unusual sounds (such as the sound of my mouse clicking) to provide an intimate and vulnerable atmosphere, and it was when I reached the chorus however that I discovered I wanted to express the other side of those intimate emotions with an energetic and big expression of that previously mentioned desperation. – HighSchool Jacob

The end result is something oddly nostalgic, though inevitably difficult to cite why. It just feels familiar. My best explanation? I don’t have one. Just sit back and drink it in.

[Electronic] Sleep Thieves ‘Fortress’ EP

Described as the definition of ‘disco noir’, Dublin-dwelling trio Sleep Thieves  release their new EP Fortress.

 They tell it best by sharing, “We’ve been recording for the last few years, playing the odd show to try some songs out live. We’ve ended up with a massive amount of material all with varying vibes. This is probably due to being in a perpetual state of studio flux. The boom is back in Dublin, this generally means art is out and upmarket hip bars and coffee places are in. We’re in our fourth studio in the last two years. Just when we get settled and get into a groove we get moved on by the landlord and our studio is gutted and becomes a Karaoke bar, Office space, Starbucks.

We’ve now started to nest in a new studio outside the city with a different atmosphere. So what does all this mean to this release you probably ask? Well, we realized upon reflection that we’re a band that draws a lot from the atmosphere and the environment we record in and thus we’ve ended up with 4 different sets of songs recorded in each place. Fortress EP is a collection of songs drawing from each, beginning life in the first studio and evolving as our transient existence bounced us from home to home.  These songs are a snapshot of how time, surroundings, upheaval and change can sculpt the creative process in unexpected yet welcome ways.

Releasing this EP as a sonic collection of this time marks the end of this period of transience with a more permanent home sourced.  If your home is said to be your castle, we’re (finally) making our new studio our Fortress.”

[Indie Rock] Suns Up – Love You Back

It’s the middle of November. For a Colorado resident, that means we’re looking at snow on the ground, scraping ice off our windshields, and spending a great deal of our time indoors. While that may be my reality at the moment, Sussex-based Suns Up has my mind fully engulfed in daydreams of road trips to beachside towns, late nights by campfires, and rocking nothing but flip flops for months on end.

In just their second release, this brand spankin’ new outfit has the sound that’s extremely polished, calling on associations of The 1975, Phoenix, and Vampire Weekend. It’s bright, sunny, and about as catchy as anything I’ve heard over the past year.

‘Love You Back’ is this first song we wrote as a band, so it feels great to share it with the world” the band explain. “It was recorded in a beautiful old chapel in the countryside which lent to the depth and character of the recording, but also gave us the space and freedom to experiment with different things to really have fun with the track. – Suns Up

[Funky] Little People – Tonight

Aside from a spattering of remixes here and there, it’s been quite some time since I’ve had something from Little People to sink my teeth into. Luckily for me, and everyone else who’s familiar with him, his two full length LPs and a handful of EPs have kept his fans at bay.

That’s one of the beautiful things about Laurent Clerc. His body of work, especially Mickey Mouse Operation and We Are But Hunks of Wood, is so thoughtfully planned and crafted, that it’s allowed fans enough slack to curb their appetite. But, with a full four years since his last EP, it’s easy to say that fans across the globe will be ecstatic to add another collection into the mix, especially if he decides to release on vinyl again.

“Tonight” marks the announcement of his next full-length, Landloper, which is due out on January 11th via Future Archive recordings. While it’s dubbed as future bass on soundcloud, this tune is far from the droves of bedroom producers that ambiguously blend together. A playful vocal sample is spattered throughout, layered in with waves of intricate synths, all set to a laid back, groovy beat. It’s warm and thoughtful, but not overbearing at any given moment. In short, it’s the perfect teaser to the upcoming enveloping experience we’re about to enjoy.
