[Electro-Pop] Chromeo ft. The Dream – Bedroom Calling

Chromeo, the stylish, iconic duo of Montreal natives and high school best friends Dave 1 and P-Thugg have established themselves as two of pop music’s most notable tastemakers since their effervescent reverberations first began making their universal rounds all the way back in 2004. Behind sterling LP’s She’s In Control, Business Casual, Fancy Footwork, and White Women the pair have cemented themselves as this generation’s leading voice of pop infused synth-funk, and to pace this year, they’ve announced the release of the group’s fifth full-length release Head Over Heels.

We’ve already had the chance to hear the LP’s leading single “Juice”, and today Chromeo have dropped off the second offering from Head Over Heels, “Bedroom Calling” featuring The Dream. The tune follows Dave 1 & P-Thugg’s established blueprint of tightly wound, popping drums, sparkling synths and crooning vocals; but with the addition of fellow funk-distributor The Dream, “Bedroom Calling” finds its own seat firmly among the duo’s established catalog. About the track Chromeo shared: “We’ve been obsessed with The-Dream since ‘Fast Car’ from his first album. To us, he’s a modern day funk auteur, like Prince or El Debarge. This song pays homage to our favorite work of his.” Stream “Bedroom Calling” below.

[Breakbeat] P!NK – Get The Party Started (Birthdayy Partyy Remix)

Everyone knows P!NK. Everyone knows her hit single “Get The Party Started” from 2001. It didn’t need an update, but it got the perfect one from the new duo Birthdayy Partyy. After releasing their debut original just two weeks ago, the twins are back with this remix.

They come in with their guns blazing with bass and boisterous breaks. This is a remix done right, and released right. Aside from the free download that’s available, the song is up on Apple Music because of the groundbreaking company Dubset that clears (most) unofficial remixes. Upon hearing it you come to the conclusion it should be taken in as an official one. Check it out and see for yourself.

[Future Bass] Saint Slumber – Getaway (Modern Machines Remix)

Modern Machines has come in clutch with a superb remix of “Getaway” by Saint Slumber. The official remix is going to be your track of the week, the one you keep coming back to day in and day out.

From indie to future bass is how “Getaway” has transformed in the hands of Modern Machines. His melodic take soars with its bright synths and clean vocal work. Modern Machines has been moving to this sound after being fluent in the house game. Since moving from there to expand his palate with new genres, he has managed to impress us more and more. We’re looking forward to hearing what else he’s got in store for 2018.

[Dubstep] The Brig – King Is Back

The Brig is one of those producers that never ceases to amaze us. The Russian may not be one of the most popular, well-known producers but he’s been spearheading the bass scene with his incredible catalog of tracks for several years now.

His most recent release is “King Is Back” on MA Music. This dubstep is nothing short of breathtaking. The Brig dishes out a mixture of musicality and sound design that few bass-peddlers posses. If the rest of the year sees him release stuff like this, then look out for him to be taking over the game. If you’d like to support this one, go on ahead and get a copy from digital platforms.

[Pop] Para Doc – Saying Things

“Saying Things” is a straight jam. The pop rock original by Para Doc dropped recently as a free download, so there’s no reason you shouldn’t be adding it to your digital library. The song speaks for itself, but we’ll get in a few words about it for you.

Catchy guitar licks lead this crossover treat whose minimal style is as groovy as it is simple. Para Doc have a unique style that breathes through all their work, but we have to say this latest track takes the cake as a dojo favorite. Click play, throw this on repeat and enjoy the rest of your day! Don’t forget to download a free copy too.

[Indie Cover] Kaerhart – For What It’s Worth

Buffalo Springfield’s iconic single “For What It’s Worth” is a timeless record. It didn’t need an update, but we’re glad it got one from the singer Kaerhart. Her dark, poppy take is totally different than the original, but we all recognize those powerful lyrics.

Kaerhart’s performance of the song is phenomenal and DEAD ROBOT’s production is equally as magnificent. Together their ethereal sound lures you into its web of sound and you let yourself get wrapped up in it without hesitation. Kaerhart is one of those artists that is going to have a big year in 2018. She just launched her project a few months ago, so expect a lot more to come from her in the coming months.

[Music Video] Crankdat – Reasons To Run

Crankdat‘s “Reasons To Run” had him step into a new light, moving from heavier bass sounds to softer ones. He still brings his edge, but it’s nice to hear him continue to branch out. Not only is the song a great one, but the music video for the single is also worth your attention.

The song’s playful vibe is lived out through the images in the video. It’s a cool concept focusing in on living life to the fullest, enjoying yourself like you did when you were a kid without obligation. Upon watching you’ll want to go outside and do that fun thing you’ve been meaning to, but haven’t. “Reasons To Run” is now available on digital platforms if you’re looking to get a copy.

The homie and master beatmaker Causmic dropped by TMN Radio this week to share selections from his debut solo album Wormholes and a few tracks that inspired it. We chopped it up about the galaxy, our mutual love of Flying Lotus and the visual influences behind ‘Wormholes.’ Building off Causmic’s otherworldly originals, we kept the instrumentals going with a wide array of experimental beats and a sprinkle of new hip-hop.

[Deep House] Bobby Nourmand – Prisoner feat. Laurent John

Bobby Nourmand is back with another hit. That’s really all that needs to be said to get you excited for what you’re about to hear. His song “Prisoner” featuring Laurent John may be his best song yet.

The cool nature that Bobby embodies breathes through his music – a smooth, driven confidence that is attractive in every way. Every time we hear something he’s able to captivate with this signature style. He’s continued to build and strengthen his abilities and today the culmination of his work has landed us “Prisoner.” Laurent John’s soulful performance is tremendous and Bobby’s instrumental is equally as mighty. Together they made “Prisoner” one of the best house tracks of 2018 so far.

Let’s disregard the week and start the fun early with “Crazy” by Born Dirty off Insomniac Records. This party-pumping jam is just what you need to shake off the cobwebs that have been forming on your fun since work/school started on Monday.

“Crazy” is a techno-inspired treat with old-school sounds that will bring you back to the glory days of dance music. It’s pure energy and fun, something that everyone could use a little bit of to get over the last little bit of the week. [Album Review] The Academic – Tales from the Backseat

You don’t have to look too far back to figure out that The Academic would end up coursing through the veins of the music industry, mainlining their highly contagious brand of alternative rock directly into our wanting veins.

Just two years back, this Irish four-piece came charging onto the scene with “Different” which proved to be the first few words of the proverbial writing on the wall. Two years later, Tales from the Backseat is here, and simply put, it proves what we expected from them back then.

Recorded in the City of Angels with producer Tim Pagnotta (you might recognize his work with acts like Dreamcar, Wilde Belle, and Saint Motel), this ten-track offering is filled with stadium fillers, anthemic in nature through and through. “Permanent Vacation” is the perfect example of how carefully they infuse pop sensibility throughout their work, focusing strongly on catchy hooks and plenty of vocal intrigue listeners will sing along to quickly.

Catchiness and instrumental talent can only carry an act so far, though. Lyrical quality, cadence, and familiarity need to do a good bit of the heavy lifting, and Tales From the Backseat brings in plenty of muscle. The collection is an audible coming of age story, one which tugs on the heartstrings of both the older, nostalgic listener, and those who are currently up to their elbows with the shocking tides of adulthood.

Have a listen below. Add it to your Spotify playlists. Share it with friends. Most of all, though, head out and catch these lads live. Aside from the the surely stunning live performance, it’s truly the best way to support your new favorite act.

HYLLS – All Over The Place [TMN Premiere]

If you’re into dance music, then the name Nadia Ali should instantly catch your eye. She’s collaborated on big hits, but is now kicking things up in a different direction with a new project. We’re proud to present HYLLS and the premiere of her debut single “All Over The Place.”

HYLLS is not going to be exactly what you’re used to from Nadia, otherwise this would be released under that project. No, HYLLS is Nadia’s exploration of sound, taking her to new territories like “All Over The Place” did. With this debut single she cooked up a soulful pop jam that we couldn’t pass up. It’s exactly something you’d expect to hear a million times on the radio, but not mind the constant airplay of it. HYLLS is refreshing, smooth and captivating. “All Over The Place” is just step one in this new direction. Enjoy the first listen and stay tuned for more from HYLLS!

[Electronic] Robotaki – Together We’re Screwed Feat. Nevve

Robotaki‘s got an EP coming. With the exciting news comes his latest track, the lead single off the EP with Nevve called “Together We’re Screwed.” If the rest of the EP is anything like this then we’re in for something special.

“Together We’re Screwed” is a beautiful original with just enough funk to get you grooving and all the uplifting sounds you could ever want in a track. After starting as a remix, Robotaki scrapped the idea and moved it to an original, but had trouble finding the right vocal fit until Nevve came along and absolutely crushed it. Together they have one of our favorite tracks of 2018 so far. Peep it; see what you think for yourself and grab a copy from digital stores if you dig it.

[Electronic] JVLY – Ache EP

If you’ve been following us in the past few months then the name JVLY might be familiar to you. He’s been releasing a string of singles as free downloads off his debut EP which has finally come to the public in full. Ache is complete with five singles and has been released independently by the Sydney producer.

JVLY doesn’t fit nicely into any one genre category. His music is a mixture of electronic, hip-hop, future and more. Each song on the EP has its own sonic space, it’s not simply a collection of tunes that all sound the same with one distinct hit. The title track is surely up there, but with the overall quality of the EP at large it’s hard to pin down one clear winner. That’s how you know you’ve got something really exceptional on your hands. Ache is now available on iTunes for those looking to get a copy.

[Electro] Wenzday – Lit

Let’s make Wednesday lit, shall we? We are going to achieve that by sharing with you “Lit” by Wenzday. If you feel like you’re in a daze with what you just read, just wait until you’re being slammed with Wenzday’s intoxicating bassline grooves and raging away to her latest single.

Released on a compilation by Chemical Energy, “Lit” is an electro beast that is most akin to the bass house sound that producers have been starting to push more steadily. Wenzday kicks things up a notch with her own take on the sub-genre, pushing forth a record that doesn’t pull any punches. If you’re looking to turn things up, then look no further than “Lit.” This one is a must have so head over to digital stores for your own copy.

[Music Video] AWAY – Honest To God (Feat. Charity)

Here in the dojo we’re all about AWAY. Each time a release comes our way we’re ecstatic with what he’s put together and that’s no different when he puts together a visual project. The release of his music video for “Honest To God” with Charity is evidence enough that AWAY’s got the video game on lock too.

If you haven’t heard “Honest To God” then you’r in for a gloomy gem that will make its way to the top of your playlists in a hurry. Just as it is with AWAY’s music we get a dark video to accompany the record. We won’t get into too much detail, but it’s an intriguing tale that sucks you in; siphoning your attention until you can’t look away even if you tried. See for yourself!

[Electronic] Charles Rivers – All I Need

All you need right now is Charles Rivers‘ new single. “All I Need” is a sensational piece of electronic music that will instantly put Charles on your radar if he is not already. The Miami musician captured us quick with this one!

From the moment the song starts with the piano chords you’re in Charles’ grip and he doesn’t let go until the end – at which point you don’t want it to end. Thankfully, there’s the repeat button. [Synth-Pop] Penguin Prison – Keep Coming Alive

It’s been a few years since we last checked in with synth-pop producer, multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and songwriter Chris Glover; who is known much more widely under his artistic alias Penguin Prison. One of the most talented musicians we’ve fallen in line with over the years, Glover never fails to produce wondrously polished, pristine work. Recently, the pop virtuoso began teasing the release of another addition to the Penguin Prison puzzle. The EP Turn It Up will see release on February 9th and while he’s already shared the title track, today we’re offering Turn It Up‘s second single “Keep Coming Alive”. The tune follows Glover’s effervescent indie-pop  blueprint, featuring rollicking guitar licks, snapping snares and a bevy of warm synths which creates a song that feels both familiar to his oldest fans, but cleaner in nearly every inch of production detail to simultaneously show off a clear evolution in craft.

While Penguin Prison was once a near daily staple in our steady diet of music, we’ve seen his releases dwindle in  numbers over in the time since his Lost in New York release.  Opening up about his recent work, Glover shared: “On the night of November 8, 2016 I initially wondered how I could even keep being an artist. It seemed like making art was trivial at that moment.  Upon further reflection I realized that of course the world needs people to make music and film and all kinds of art.  It can get very hard to keep coming alive while it seems like the world is trying to cut you down.  You have to keep reminding yourself every day.” We can’t relay how touched by these sentiments, and happy to be featuring new Penguin Prison music in the process.

In support of Turn It Up,  Penguin Prison has also announced a new slate of tour dates which you can read after the jump. Stream “Keep Coming Alive” below.

[Music Video] Sophia Ayana – Chains Off

Sophia Ayana is a name you need to familiarize yourself with. She’s been dishing out some hot tracks with her latest being “Chains Off.” The moombah-tinged pop treat is an emotionally engaging single by itself, but there’s a whole other piece to the picture with the visual component.

“Chains Off” is all about love and its complexities, something that will hit home for a lot of listeners. It is an easy song to become attached to lyrically, as well as audibly given the incredible instrumental and a performance by Sophia that is unrelenting in its power. The music video keeps things simple, focusing in on Sophia herself as she expresses the song in a juxtaposing fashion. [House] LondonBridge – Sound Of The Underground: The Remixes

LondonBridge has arrived with Sound Of The Underground: The Remixes and it is a house head’s dream come true. This collection of three remixes is just the right mix of sounds to augment the already spectacular original “Sound Of The Underground” that dropped on the EP with the same name.

If you haven’t checked out the clubby original, we’ve got you covered below alongside the remixes. First we start out with TYPE3‘s electro infused beast that has the most oomph on the project. Morelia comes next with an undeniably unique take that is unlike most of the house music that comes through the dojo. Lastly Zendlo takes us home with a deep and techy flip to round out the EP. All together these are just the remixes that LondonBridge’s original needed. What makes this project even better is each remix is available as a free download!

[R&B/Pop] Benny Mayne – Bounce

There’s a brand new face – or rather, voice – on the scene that you need to familiarize yourself with. Benny Mayne is coming stacked with releases for 2018, but he’s kicking off things with his R&B jam “Bounce” that just dropped today fresh out of the oven.

“Bounce” is a smooth, sexy single that is sure to make enough noise to really get Benny’s new endeavor off the ground in epic fashion. Benny weaves underground urban sounds together with the subtlest touch of pop for a song that isn’t too hard to imagine on the radio or being plastered across channels like Music Choice or MTV. It’s not easy to dial in such a balance but “Bounce” is an exceptional tune. To show his appreciation, Benny is giving this one away for free, but if you’d like to support his project you may purchase it as well.

Conrad’s new techy single has came to the public through Infinity Pool Recordings last month, but we couldn’t pass up sharing it with you here.

“Kneel Da Grass / Tight Son” is structured to be two songs in one. Conrad doesn’t take it easy and stretches his songwriting abilities to really deliver something special with this single. One of the most underrated genres out there is Jersey Club. The legendary figure in the movement, R3LL, has come through the pipeline with a hot new EP released on Dim Mak that absolutely needs your full attention. This is A JERZ Love Story.

With A JERZ Love Story R3LL has four classics on his hands all mashed together masterfully in one project. Fatboy Slim – Bird of Prey (Aston Shuffle Remix) [TMN Premiere]

This Friday, January 19th, prepare for an epic match – and we aren’t talking about Mayweather vs McGregor. Fatboy Slim, an iconic name in the producing world is taking on some of Australia’s finest with Fatboy Slim vs Australia, a remix album releasing on Skint/BMG. Artists featured on the album include LO’99, The Kite String Tangle, Set Mo, Carmada, Sam La More, Northlane, and the duo we bring you tonight: The Aston Shuffle.

“Fatboy Slim is one of those names that is so legendary, you’d be mad not to say yes if the opportunity arose to work on something he is a part of. It was so great to be able to remix one of his songs, we hope we did the song justice!”

The Australian duo introduce us to their darker side with late night feel compared to the slightly lighter original. Around the 3:30 minute mark we’re introduced to even darker bass cuts, a sound that certainly deserves a spot on a track list for those after-hour events. [Indie/Synth-Pop] Yoke Lore – Goodpain (Blondage Remix)

Brooklyn based indie-pop auteur Adrian Galvin (formerly of Walk the Moon) spins lush webs of synth soaked pop music under the Yoke Lore moniker, and closed out 2017 with the release of an excellent EP: Goodpain. This past weekend, Yoke Lore’s Goodpain was buoyed by the release of an accompanying Goodpain Remixes sister-EP featuring indie mainstays including Yeasayer, Chad Valley, Shy Girls and more; and we’ve been happily consuming it in the time since.

Standing tall among Yoke Lore’s impressive offering of remixes is Danish electro-pop duo Blondage‘s sparkling treatment of the EP’s title track “Goodpain”. Blondage unravels Lore’s original melody, infusing their revision with a healthy dose of soulful piano stabs, and a bent take on its hooky synth line. Instrumentally, the pair manage to simultaneously gloss up their version of the tune, while also painting flecks of a more minimal approach to pop music throughout. Be sure to check out the rest of Yoke Lore’s Goodpain Remixes EP, but until then stream Blondage’s remix of “Goodpain” above.

[Electro] Birthdayy Partyy – Unwrapped feat. Rico Act

For each of us Birthday parties are a once a year event. However Birthdayy Partyy is here to make sure the party doesn’t stop ever. This duo of twins has come forth with their debut single “Unwrapped” featuring rapper Rico Act. Break out the balloons, red solo cups and any other gear you need, Birthdayy Partyy has officially started.

Coming from Chicago these two have obviously been influenced by house music, but their song isn’t as straightforward as that. The hip-hop introduction really sets the stage for what’s to come – that being some dirty basslines blending the groove of G house with the energy of electro. “Unwrapped” doesn’t stop their, the song changes with the second drop, but we’ll leave that as a surprise for you. It’s only their first single and we’re already at the edge of our seat for more. Safe to say we won’t be leaving Birthdayy Partyy anytime soon! [Electro] Solstis – Open Your Eyes

It may take some time, but electro is definitely making a comeback. Although the style can be split between BPMs, the sound is much the same and today we’re sharing with you a midtempo marvel called “Open Your Eyes” by Solstis. This original is the third single off the duo’s upcoming debut album set for release next month.

“Open Your Eyes” doesn’t pull any punches with its warehouse ready basslines that are full of aggression and grit. This industrial-influenced monster may not be as fast paced as a lot of electro out there, but Solstis manages to input enough groove to get the perfect swing for a headbanger’s anthem. Raw, unrefined and truly a work of bass-driven art, “Open Your Eyes” is likely to continue to terrorize sets until the end of Summer 2018 and beyond. Best part about it is it’s a free download!

One of Australia’s Finest Gems Godlands Opens Up In The Dojo [TMN Interview]

Australia has a lot to offer the music world. It’s steeped with talent, but not all that talent is as recognized as should be. Enter Godlands, one of the Australia’s finest gems that you’ll soon come to hear talked about by an exponentially increasing number of people. Coming from Adelaide, Godlands is starting to make moves with her fiercely seductive sound.

If you’re looking to start a party, then Godlands is the go-to, but don’t expect her to tuck herself in comfortably in a creative box. Her dynamic approach to music has captivated audiences across the world, but she’s only just begun. We were lucky enough to have Godlands in the dojo for a chat about what got her to this point in music today and what we can expect for 2018. Lastly, we have some fun with a few hypothetical situations to end the interview.

If you haven’t checked out music from Godlands, then hurry up and click that play button to hear her latest trap single “Hit Em Like This.” Later on we’ve got you covered with her debut single as well entitled “Finally.” She’s only got these two out, but we promise more will come!

TMN: Let’s go back in time – growing up, what kind of music did you listen to?

G: Omg so muuuuch. I grew up listening to Beach boys, Electric Light Orchestra, even a bit of System of a Down then obviously did the jump to 90s/early 00’s pop as one does – you know your Britney Spears, Spice girls, Blue, Five etc etc. Then heaps of Hip Hop and RnB especially Chris Brown, I was like a mega fan of Chris Brown. It wasn’t until I was in high school I started listening to electronic music – The Bloody Beetroots being a fav of mine.

TMN: What got you into creating music originally?

G: I felt super confident with my DJing and knew it could only take me so far so I wanted to branch out and get into production.

TMN: You’ve got a striking name, how did you come up with Godlands?

It was honestly the hardest name to come up with, such an effort and stressful thing, coming up with an artist name these days haha. Nowadays everyone has every name under the sun when it comes to social handles. I really wanted Badlands but I couldn’t ensure I’d be okay with trademarking and there were older bands that had that name so I decided to go with Godlands because it was available haha.

TMN: Did it take time for you to come into your current sound, or was your signature always there?

G: The problem I have is that I like so many different sounds and I want to use all of them. But it just ends up sounding whack so tbh I think I’m still trying to find my sound. But also not. Like I don’t want to put that sort of pressure on me, if some days I feel like making something cute I will – other days it’ll be rough as guts. It depends how I feel.

TMN: How would you describe your music in three words?

G: What. Is. This.

TMN: If you could collaborate with three producers and three vocalists for a project, who would they be?

WhatSoNot, KRANE aaaaand SZA.

TMN: What can we look forward to from Godlands?

G: I’m currently trying to get my life together and deciding on which WIP I need to finish first, GUYS PRESSURE. Lets just say I have things cooking.

TMN: Let’s shake things up – you’re being banished to an island and get to bring one item and fill a fanny pack, what do you bring?

I feel as if I want to be at least a little mature in this and bring a swag because I’m way too lazy and incapable to make my own shelter. As for the fanny pack, I’ll definitely need a packet of M&M’s, a toothbrush & paste because I can’t stand my teeth being furry and a knife.

TMN: Nuclear Fallout is taking place. You get to bring a +1 into the Vault to stay safe, who do you bring?

G: I would have to bring my gf Naomi because she would legit break up with me if I didn’t.

TMN: Lastly, Australia’s government dissipates and you’re elected Queen of Australia, what’s the first law you put into place?

Gay Marriage to be legalised for sure, that’s all I’d really care about tbh lol. Oh and to rescue and help the people on Manus Island. That shit’s whack. We’ve all got to start caring about people more.

Saint Slumber – NEED [TMN Video Premiere]

Today we’ve enlisted the help of Saint Slumber to get over this week’s hump. The East coast indie rock band has come through the dojo with the music video for their single “NEED” off their EP YOUTH//1. We’re honored to premiere the video to you now!

“NEED” in song form is a strong alternative creation full of life and color. The music video may be lacking color, but that’s not necessary for a dope music video. Saint Slumber executed a simple idea – bringing together people for an intimate kickback performance – and did what they needed to do for an engaging project. Upon viewing you’re going to wish that you were right smack dab in the middle of the video.

[House] Nightcall – Let You Go

You won’t be letting go of Nightcall’s new single anytime soon. The duo’s original “Let You Go” is a magnificent piece of feel-good house music. They do everything right from top to bottom, bringing in acoustic elements into the mix alongside delectable electronic ones.

“Let You Go” drives forth with a chilled vigor, a sense of cool that is not an easy thing to manifest in a song. [R&B] ChampionsLeak – Fuck The Pain Away (feat. Radiiio)

You might think a song called “Fuck The Pain Away” would be anything but subtle given its provocative name. However, ChampionsLeak‘s new single would fool you with its sexy, tasteful sound. The collaboration with Radiiio is ringing in the new year with a sensual sweetness that you’ll be savoring again and again.

“Fuck The Pain Away” comes as the debut original for the duo ChampionsLeak. They’re starting on the right note dropping this one as it molds together different styles for a radio-friendly feast. [Music Ninja Radio] Episode 98: Cosmic Amanda & DJ Chad on the Spaceship

On the eve of our Space Disco / BFF.fm Benefit, we were joined by BFF.fm’s founder Cosmic Amanda and the legendary DJ Chad. But before we got into the disco sesh, I kicked off the show with some hazy, spacey cuts from MGMT, Vivian Fantasy, Nabihah Iqbal and Akasha System. Vindata‘s new mixtape was so good that I had to squeeze in a lil sampler (4 songs!) of its soultronic magic. Before sharing some phenomenal disco cuts, Amanda and I chopped it up about BFF history, Victorian submarines and our mutual love of disco. DJ Chad closed the show out with some wiggly space bumps. – Ash
