[Future] Petit Biscuit – Problems (Taska Black Remix) ft. Lido
Taska Black slowed it down with his remix of Petit Biscuit and Lido‘s song “Problems”. Straight off of the track’s remix EP, this particular one stands out from the others, and it’s pretty easy to see why. But you don’t need to take it from me, Petit Biscuit had this to say about it: “Taska Black made Problems sounds like one of the freshest future pop track ever. This is something different, something nice, and something we all try to find!”
Taska Black really presents his musical abilities in this remix. While holding onto Lido’s beautiful vocals, almost everything else in the track was redone by him. Everything culminates in the drop when Taska Black lets loose with future synths and a manipulated version of Lido’s voice. What strikes me the most about this remix, however, is how it manages to be mellow and exciting at the same time. The style is multifaceted, and it really reflects how versatile Taska Black is as a producer.

The Compensators – Love Drags [TMN PREMIERE]
God damnit, I love it when I can bring you a debut track. There are few things that get me more excited to bust out my laptop and start writing. Today’s offering is perfect for Friday’s soundtrack too, coming at you fresh and direct via Brooklyn-based The Compensators.
Comprised of Curtis Strange (lead vocals/guitar), Chaz Mitchells (drums/backup vocals), Stevie Blunder (bass), and Kip Wicked (guitar), this eccentric four-piece met at a full-moon party on the roof of Loft 45 Bushwick, and immediately bonded over fast cars and their favorite guitars. While I can’t personally confirm that ice cold beers were had, I feel pretty confident peppering that into this origin story.
“Love Drags” is their first release, and simply put, it’s an anthem for the unruly and obstreperous, inciting all who listen to go out and imbibe. Whether your form of indulgence is just some emphatic finger drumming on your car’s steering wheel, or going out for a night of drunken shenanigans, it’s your jam. Don’t take it from me, though. Check out this epic quote that surfaced up:
If you’re into twangy lead riffs, psychedelic vibes, and sing-along lyrics, you can stop right here. Press play and get on with your epic weekend, complete with an epic new artist and track.

The Solarists – Wait For It [TMN PREMIERE]
As summer comes rolling in, I always seem to find myself hunting down a solid collection of indie rock tunes to soundtrack all the adventures that are sure to come. Luckily for me, and all of you, I was offered the opportunity to bring you a first listen of “Wait For It,” the latest offering from Provo-based four-piece The Solarists.
A perfectly intertwined duo of dreamy, wandering verses and a rowdy-as-hell chorus, this tune catches your attention early and grips it throughout the whole ride. The lyrics are approachable and quite memorable, giving you the opportunity to sing along after only a few spins. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if you end up belting this out on your drive home from work today.
The Solarists are comprised of childhood friends Clint Purser (bass/sax/lead vocals), Nate Wall (lead guitar/vocals) and Justin Dunkley (drums), with Kaua Sprout (rhythm guitar/vocals) added into the mix a few months after inception. I strongly suggest keeping an eye on them over the next year. With a sound as infectious as theirs, it shouldn’t come as a surprise when these guys really starting picking up steam.

MOONZz – Aftershock [TMN Premiere]
One thing we all have to look forward to is the release of a new EP from MOONZz. On May 18th, her EP Aftershock drops in full, but today we’ve got you covered early with the premiere of her third single from the project, which just happens to be the title track.
“Aftershock” begins with an intriguing sonic haze that sucks you right into the song. From there MOONZz takes a strong lead with an unforgettable performance, something that’s become the norm for her. With a whole lot of soul she turns up the heat on a rather chill tune, invigorating the listener while the instrumental relieves. It’s an honor to host this incredible record to you first, so enjoy the exclusive listen and get ready for the full Aftershock EP!

[Electronic] Youngman Goon – Dusty 6
Denver’s own Youngman Goon has come back after nearly a year to follow up with a third single. If you were looking for a vibey chiller to get you through the rest of the week, then you’ve got it in “Dusty 6.” This one is five minutes of pure relaxation.
“Dusty 6” is the ultimate soothing record, pushing forth soundscapes that infiltrate your brain and calm it down with acoustic sentiment. There’s some international undertones with elements taken from world music, specifically from the East. It gives the track an exotic natural tone that contributes to its allure. We’ve only got three tracks from Youngman Goon within the past year and a half, but we’re yearning for more.

[Music Video] Kllo – Potential
Melbourne-native cousins Simon Lam and Chloe Kaul have often been featured here on The Music Ninja, under the artist name of Kllo. They’ve returned today with their first single release since their acclaimed 2017 album Backwater, which firmly cemented their sound and identity as artists. With nothing left to prove, Lam and Kaul take some creative liberties and experiment a bit more on latest single, titled “Potential”.
“Potential” interlaces Kaul’s characteristically dreamy vocals with a moody piano chords, said to have been conceived in a green room while on tour one day. You see a little bit more R&B influence come through on this track, representative of the duo’s desire to expand beyond the sonic persona that they established for themselves in 2017. The emotional track laments the loss of a love that just couldn’t work out. It comes with an accompanying music video, check it out below:
If you liked what you heard, Kllo will be kicking off a tour at the end of the month, making stops in the States before heading off to Europe. Tour dates and a ticket link are available below.

The Indigo Project – As Always [TMN VIDEO PREMIERE]
Coming hot off a string of successful shows, including Live at Leeds, Yorkshire-based The Indigo Project have something to tide fans over until their next tour.
“As Always,” their first single of 2018, has been making waves for the past month or so, leading the way to cheering fans across the UK this spring. Anthemic in nature, it sizzles with eccentric guitar work, equal parts booming and splashy percussion, and a delightfully raucous chorus. It’s energetic and infectious — the type of tune you can picture yourself screaming at the top of your lungs in a rowdy, humid venue.
The accompanying video, which we’re premiering here today, showcases a Day in the Life-style story, interspersed with live-action shots of Oliver Barry (guitar), Alex Crow (bass), Tony Francis (guitar) and Jack Manktelow (drums). It’s the perfect visualization, according to the band:

[TMN Interview & Album Review] The Bones of J.R. Jones’ Third Studio Album: Ones to Keep Close
“Listening to music is a deeply personal experience and the way one interacts with any art reflects their past.”
There’s something distinctly recognizable about American music– whether it goes by blues, roots, Americana, or any similar moniker. Stylistically it’s always soulbaringly expository; a reflection of our rich history of diverse musical influences. There are always those creations that are unmistakably the product of America; sounds that capture the grit of the swampy south, the loneliness of our dusty highways, and the solitude in our mountains. In his third studio album Ones to Keep Close, The Bones of J.R. Jones manages to capture all of these sounds.
As the production of solo-artist Jonathon Linaberry, The Bones of J.R. Jones keeps alive the flavors of genres and styles long past their original heyday. In order to better understand the man and the process responsible, check out the interview below:
TMN: Can you tell me about some of your influences and what you’ve taken from each of them?
My influences range quite the spectrum… but if I had to pick a handful I would say Son House for his passion and, Springsteen for his melodies, and Tom Waits for his sense of theater.
TMN: If you could get into a room with any musician, contemporary or historic, to make a song, who would it be and why?
JL: It would be Howlin Wolf. Nobody can write a swinging blues riff like him.
TMN: You’ve been known to find solace and inspiration in your farmhouse in the Catskills. Can you tell us more about your creative process?
JL: There’s not much of a process. It’s more of just sitting still and turning [off] all computers and electronic devices. Forcing myself to do that and forcing myself to be stimulated in other ways is the best to get the creative juices flowing.
TMN: How did you come to acquire your distinctively American sound?
JL: Can’t say why that happened. I suppose it’s just the music I fell in love with growing up. You hear something and it resonates with you at moment. It creates an experience for you. That’s something that will stay with you for the rest of your life.
TMN: Were there any seminal moments in your life that influenced your musical ear?
JL: For sure, hearing Blind Lemon Jefferson in a dorm room my first year in college changed my trajectory. I wouldn’t be doing what I do now if I hadn’t stumbled in that room so many years ago.
TMN: How would you describe the Americana/blues/soul sound of today? (i.e. where’s the music coming from, what are the themes/messages)
JL: I think there’s a lot of different school of blues. Some try to stay true to their roots. I think that’s it’s own form of respect for where the blues came from. Other’s take what’s been done and try to innovate a bit… in my humble opinion many times that crashes and burns. There is the rare instance where someone comes across and something truly unique and it’s a success… but I feel like that’s few and far between.
TMN: When you aren’t creating music, what do you like to listen to? Any other genres or sounds that you’re a fan of?
JL: I listen to a lot of jazz. Roy Eldridge and Chet Baker is always in rotation these days.
TMN: On lead single “Burden”, you write that “it came out of a place where people search for someone to share the weight of the world”. How has emotional isolation, even loneliness, shaped you as a musician? As a person?
JL: It’s shaped quite a bit. I travel by myself. I play music by myself. Spending four weeks on the road by yourself can’t help but influence every facet of your life… socially, creatively or personally.
TMN: Is there a message behind Ones to Keep Close? What would you like to tell your friends as they listen to the album?
JL: There is no overall theme or message per se. The record as a whole was an attempt from me to try something a little new. To grow beyond my other records. As a result, it sounds bigger, fuller and hopefully a little more thoughtful. I don’t like telling people what to take away from my music. Listening to music is a deeply personal experience and the way someone interacts with any art reflects their past. If the music is any good it should creates it own theme with the listener. That’s what I hope to do.
Ones to Keep Close is a creation that blends together Linaberry’s diverse influences as a musician, while paying homage to the tenets and traditions of each. As Linaberry says during the interview, he stays true to his roots and his roots are his own– showing respect to his predecessors in the process. Though strictly a solo artist (playing every instrument) in the past, Linaberry incorporates the talents of his friends, artist Nicole Atkins and producer Rob Niederpruem for this latest production.
The whole album is orchestrated around making you feel something; loneliness, exuberance, energy. It has been described as a “stomp-along” experience, and the track titled “The Drop” certainly stands out in this regard. I envisioned hearing this song coming out of a jukebox in a dimly-lit bar on the side of a highway, as you hear the crack of a pool table in the back. “I See You”, a 180 bpm track that ups the album’s pace significantly, ends with classic-blues style triplets that conjure images of American muscle cars doing burnouts. The tracks “Please” and “Sister” employ the use of gospel-inspired call-and-response and hymnal organs, making you feel as though they should heard on the church bench. Ones to Keep Close sounds like the embodiment of American life and culture heard through the lens of music. As you listen to Linaberry’s latest album, think about what feelings the music invokes for you and how that could be a reflection of your past.

nøll – breathe [TMN Premiere]
Today the Texas talent nøll drops his debut EP, the empty set. We’ve got the opportunity to premiere the closing track “breathe” for you right here in the dojo. This ethereal treat will start your weekend off nicely.
One thing that is apparent right from the start of “breathe” is that it’s going to be an ultimate dose of musical relaxation. From its vibe to the lyrics, this track is definitely one that you want to jam to by yourself, in some headphones with your eyes closed. It can be enjoyed elsewhere, but to really let it take hold of your mind and sooth your soul, perform the former. nøll flexes a unique, simple composition whose power rests in its minimalism. [Electronic] Autograf – Dead Soon Remixes EP
The good ol’ creatives that make up Autograf have recently unveiled remixes for their single “Dead Soon” that’s still gaining its own steam. Augmenting the heat are three remixers who have completely different takes on the original. They’re all fire and all flips the original deserved.
First we kick things off with a future bass cut from Scorsi that rides its wave of synths right into the pleasure centers of your brain. Next comes Detroit’s Golf Clap with one of the coolest, grooviest remixes we’ve heard in a bit. Lastly, the Birthdayy Partyy twins turn up the energy to astonishing levels with their bass-driven take that pays homage to the electro house sounds of the 2012 era, while bringing everything forward to 2018. All together, this is an EP you need in your library.

[Dubstep] Stabby – Blade EP
Oh Stabby, you dirty dirty man. There’s been a lot of great dubstep that has come out this year, but Stabby’s new EP on Buygore, Blade, slices through most everything else with ease and stands above the bloody mess tall and proud. Although he’s been one of the best up and comers, Stabby solidifies himself further in huge way with this EP.
In just three tracks Stabby shows why, without a doubt, he deserves your attention. It’s one of those projects where you really can’t pick a favorite and when you finally do, upon listening through again your change your mind and are left wondering, how can all three of these be so damn good? We don’t know the answer, we can try to talk about what sounds and motifs make up each track, but it’s better if we just let it simmer on your ears. Blade speaks for itself. And it also needs to be added to your library.

[Hip-Hop] Armani White – casablanco freestyle (ft. Sango)
The Philly to LA rapper Armani White has some big things coming. He’s got a major debut project on the way, but in the mean time he’s shared its lead single, as well as the “casablanco freestyle” that we’ve got for you today. Featuring the producer Sango, this heater is not something you’ll want to pass by without engaging.
Armani really brought the flames on this one and so did Sango with a beat that is hood majestic. Although Armani states that this isn’t like what is coming on his upcoming project, we’re still excited all the same. “casablanoc freestyle” breathes a confident creative edge that is sharp and cool. If you’re not adding this to your Spotify playlist, then you’re depriving your future self and your friends.

[Future Bass] Jaron – Time, Real & Imaginary
Jaron is living proof that age is just a number. For his 16th birthday (you heard me…16th birthday), this kid decided to put out a track called “Time, Real & Imaginary” and boy did it blow my mind.
With such vast instrumentation, Jaron channels back an forth between classical instruments, electronic sounds, and a singular voice. By doing this, the song manages to have two completely different sides to it. One side is soft, pretty, and calming. The female voice hums notes while a beautiful sounding piano accompanies her. Meanwhile, the other side of the song is an incredible display of heated passion. Drums practically burst out of your speakers, and the synths play with such intensity. The song is a constant battle between these two very different sides, and the product of this battle is this incredible piece of music. Although this might not be something you’d hear playing at a club or music festival, it is something you can really listen to and appreciate. It’s songs like these that remind you that music is an art.
So throw this beautiful piece of music a free download!

[Pop] Josefine – Do It For Me
The Los Angeles pop-crossover artist Josefine has come through the pipeline with a new single. Her jam “Do It For Me” found its way into our hearts and therefore all our Summer playlists – likely, it’s going to do the same for you.
It’s not what you’d expect from a poppy electronic record called “Do It For Me.” Josefine switches up the love-laden Summer single by flipping the script for a liberating track. Some might find it a bit sad, but ultimately it’s aim is to motivate and allow oneself to let go. This one is definitely worth the purchase price if you still buy tracks, otherwise you can add it to your playlist – either way, do so here.

Hailing from North London, Latir has come overseas to the dojo with via his latest single. “I’ll Be There” His bridging of R&B with electronic is just what our ears needed this week. Let Latir usher in the weekend with this one.
“I’ll Be There” is a memorable laid-back love track. It’s dreamy, soulful and the chorus will be stuck in your head for quite some time. Latir enlisted Danny George for the production and together they knocked this one out of the park. Safe to say, next time Latir drops a record, we’ll be there. [Electronic] Ruchir – Chicas (Silcrow Remix) ft. BUTO
At a first glance, the Soundcloud page of Silcrow seems like nothing much. With only 56 followers and one remix, there is little reason to see this guy as anything more than a classic wannabe producer. But let me tell you something, after listening to that one remix of Ruchir’s “Chicas”, I am convinced that this guy is gonna be playing festivals by the end of this year.
While the original version of the song has a minimal, chill, trappy vibe to it, Silcrow’s rendition is the complete opposite. The entire remix is a complete 3 minutes and 29 seconds of fast-paced, absolutely banging sounds. Hard-hitting synths and drums are only the half of it. What I really love about this track is how professional the production on it sounds. Despite so much going on throughout the remix, Silcrow manages to keep everything sounding flawless. I’m beyond excited to see what else this guy has in store for this year. Be sure to grab a free download of this incredible track!

[Electronic] Lil Skies – Nowadays (Snugs Remix)
Nothing makes my day more than when I come across new, groundbreaking artists, so when I first listened to this remix by Snugs, I couldn’t help but smile. With only four tracks out on Soundcloud, this act has managed to garner over 400k plays, and it’s pretty easy to see why.
This remix holds onto all the great aspects of the original song, while also changing certain things in the best ways possible. With smooth synths, wild vocal chops, and groovy drums, the ingenuity of this track is next level. I’m so happy I found these guys on my Soundcloud feed because they’re definitely going places.
Oh, and if you’re not grabbing a free download of this right now, I don’t know what you’re doing.

[Indie] easton – Blue Love
You may not know it but you’ve likely already seen work done by the artist easton. The Texas to LA talent has been a professional photographer having taken photos of the Jenner sisters, as well as Charli XCX, but now he’s moved on to making music. His debut “Blue Love” has us falling head over heels for him.
“Blue Love” is a soothing dive into the depths of the heart and soul. One of the things that really sticks out on this one is the vocal performance – it’s unique, catching the ears off-guard in the best way possible. It turns out easton used to be in jazz choir and now is utilizing that venture to the fullest with this new endeavor. Safe to say, we’re looking forward to more from him!
“This song is about drowning in love and the swelling of emotions. Holding your breath, sinking deeper and letting it wash over you until you’re drenched.”

[Music Video] Midoca – The Feeling Is Gone
One of the more intriguing artists we’ve had our eyes and ears on as of late has been Midoca. With his music and videos he’s ensnared us in his creative web and we’re not looking to escape anytime soon.
His latest release is the indie electronic crossover “The Feeling Is Gone” that is sure to conjure up some heavy emotions despite its name. This record is almost therapeutic in tone, but in a cathartic way of letting something meaningful go. With the music video it does a wonderful job of translating that tone over to the visual medium. It’s a simple idea set upon awesome landscapes that pull you in. Yet again Midoca has stricken us with his talents.

[Hip-Hop] Mike G – Chase Clouds EP
Los Angeles creative Mike G has been hard at work on his debut album, Stealth Fighter. To get everybody reacquainted with the Odd Future talent he put together the Chase Clouds EP, complete with ten tracks, half of which were produced by Mike G himself.
Chase Clouds is a solid project from front to back with a good mix of sounds to keep you entertained throughout. Despite there being differing sounds on the EP, Mike G keeps with a motif that fits the project name with an overarching theme of cloudy, atmospheric tones. This more vibe-driven style is easy to let loose with, yet it isn’t so low-key that you get bored with it. Chase Clouds is just what we need to warm up to before the debut album comes.

Saba’s Ascension Continues @ Slim’s, San Francisco 5/3 [Event Review]
Chicago natives Saba and Joseph Chilliams came through San Francisco this past Thursday night as a stop in Saba’s Care for Me tour. The two co-founders of Pivot Gang, an independent music collective, delivered electric performances in front of an all-ages audience from all over the Bay Area. The show marked Saba’s first return to San Francisco since his Bucket List tour in early 2017. Concertgoers that had attended the 2017 show remarked upon the noticeable improvement in his stage presence and live chops.
Early opening support for the show came from Chicago compatriot Jean Deaux (check out that wordplay), who later returned to perform the track “Photosynthesis”, a track on which she features. Joseph Chilliams, who happens to be Saba’s brother, took over soon after. Chilliams presented tracks from his debut album Henry Church, named solely for the English translation of Enrique Iglesias’ name. The rest of Chiliams’ set was similarly “tongue-in-cheek”, with plenty of references to eating “groceries”. Chilliams’ set could best be described as a celebration of self and sex. His upbeat attitude and stage presence reflected those of an artist with much to celebrate– expect to be hearing much more from this guy in the near future.
Donning a topically conscious Kaepernick jersey in San Francisco, Saba blessed us with a relevant display of passion and emotion, drawn from his youth in westside Chicago. The 23 year-old showed why he’s the unofficial frontman of Pivot Gang by captivating the audience with a solid hour’s worth of bars. He let on some signs of an artist that’s still really coming into his own, occasionally seeming surprised at the audience’s familiarity with his discography. Attendees responded with reckless enthusiasm for older tracks like “World in my Hands” and “Westside Bound”, while “LIFE” off of his most recent album Care for Me was undoubtedly the floor-shaking highlight of the night. After two solid album releases in Bucket List and Care for Me and resounding live performances such as Thursday night’s, you can’t help but be excited for things to come from Saba.
Don’t miss out on the chance to see Saba live. You can find the rest of his tour dates here.

Lords Of Acid – So Goddamn Good [TMN Premiere]
As far as electronic music goes, Lords Of Acid is an act that’s up in the Pantheon as they have been around since the late 1980’s. They’ve continued to amass a catalog of unusual works and this year it’s going to grow immensely with a new project, Pretty In Kink.
Today we have the honor of premiering a piece of LP by way of the single “So Goddamn Good” that is not so subtle in its provocative nature. But when are Lords Of Acid ever the ones to be subtle? Their mind-bending attitude fits well with their music, certainly with regard to this exciting sexual creation. If you’re feeling frisky, mentally undress yourself and get busy with the latest from Lords Of Acid.

Cazzette went all out with this progressive original, pushing forth a composition whose intricacies are patched together to perfection. Getting Morgan on board for vocal duties was a tremendous pick, as the performance is magnificent. Every little detail strengthens the others for a full package whose replay value is grand. Busta Rhymes feat. Pharrell – Light Your Ass On Fire (Nick Evol Remix) [TMN Premiere]
“Light Your Ass On Fire” was the major collaboration between Busta Rhymes and Pharrell from 2003. Now in 2018, instead of jamming out to the hip-hop original, we’re getting down and dirty with the electro version thanks to Nick Evol.
The dojo welcomes Nick yet again for another premiere, this time of his dark, energetic cut of the aforementioned hit. In keeping with an electro inspired sound, Nick further establishes himself in the bass scene as a unique tangent to the sounds of Rezz and her forerunners. With this take he keeps his sharp industrial edge which we have come to love. With subtle hints of the original hi-hop beat, the blend of genres is riveting. Lastly, Nick Evol dropped this one as a free download!

Kultur – Off To Get Lost [TMN Premiere]
Take a few minutes away from work or school or whatever you have going to to let loose with a new single from Kultur. Today we premiere his single “Off To Get Lost” released on Nowadays Records. This magical tale distorts the line between reality and dreams for a mystical adventure you’ll want to take over and over again.
Kultur’s cinematic sound on this track easily activates one’s imagination. Despite it’s dreamy characteristic the song is quite lively with fast paced rhythms and invigorating melodies. “Off To Get Lost” does just that – allows you to really separate yourself from whatever things you have going on. It’s one of those songs that really drives home the transformative power of music.

[House] select.browse.cancel – Encounters EP
THNK TNK Records backed a debut EP from the artist select.browse.cancel called Encounters. This deep and techy dive into house music is full of hypnotic beats and mesmerizing structures from the melodies to the chord progressions and beyond.
Encounters is a two track EP. but it feels more like four or five given the nearly nine minute length of each of the tracks. Usually, that’d be a bit too long unless you’re talking about the extended mix of “Strobe,” but select.browse.cancel manages to keep your attention engaged throughout each track. Both singles share cosmic undertones, however they do differ well enough that you don’t feel like they’re the same tune, just varied slightly. It’s a big project for just being two songs in length and it has us ready for more from select.browse.cancel.

[Electronic] dog logic – higher order functions LP
Every so often a project comes along that is revolutionary at its core. Today we’re sharing one such project, the debut album from dog logic, which is made up by Andy formerly of The M Machine. After leaving the trio to pursue more technological endeavors, he ended up still making music that has culminated into the higher order functions LP.
Not only are the songs on this project diverse and separated from the usual sounds everybody is used to, but the implementation of the project is unique. dog logic has put forth an interactive experience where producers and other creatives can take samples from the project for remixes and other things. This open-source database is likely something we’ll continue to see happen with more and more projects. It takes steps forward like this to make the changes in both music and tech.

EMME & Erotic Cafe Heat Up The Dojo With New Single “Fiyah” [TMN Interview]
Today we’re turning the dojo into a sauna thanks to some extra heat from EMME and Erotic Cafe. Their latest collaboration on the moombahton single “Fiyah” is setting the dance music world ablaze. Released on Rude Mood Records, this single is ushering the warm weather and festival season in style.
With the single comes both acts who joined us in the dojo for a quick Q&A to talk about their single, how Rude Mood got involved and what their favorite moombahton tracks are. Finally, you’ll get into what they’ve got set for the upcoming seasons. Get ready to dance and sweat, the “Fiyah” is here.
TMN: How did you guys end up coming together for “Fiyah”?
Em: It was a while after we put out “Bad Mind,” and we were kind of shocked at the impact that track had and how well it was received; so that inspired us to want to create a follow up.
Marco: Nothing much to add on what Emlyn already said, we just wanted to make a follow up to “Bad Mind” with more moombah vibes in it, and we made it.
TMN: From it’s start to finish, how did you guys dial in the track for the final product?
Em: The main theme, vibe and sounds behind this one were actually all Marco’s concept – he sent me this whacky idea with moombah beats and what I like to call retro-inspired lead sound. They almost gave me a throwback to Nintendo days. It all came about very quickly, more so than usual, with a few ideas being thrown back and forth until the final product was landed.
Marco: I wanted to make a moombah track using only chopped vocals in the drop so I started looking for good samples to use and, after I found some and processed them quite a lot, I couldn’t stop laughing because at the beginning it was sounding too much like a chicken’s cluck, so I really enjoyed working on it.
TMN: The good people over at Rude Mood signed this one, how did they end up getting on board?
TMN: Where do you guys think Moombahton is at right now and where is it headed?
Em: I think it’s in a really good place right now, especially in the US. With high profile guys like Diplo and Dillon pushing similar sounds it definitely has the potential to keep growing. In Australia it’s a very different story and I’m really trying to push the sound here more because I think it has a lot of potential. With such massive use of African, Caribbean and Latin inspired rhythms and sounds in so many popular songs, moombahton has a bright future.
Marco: I think Moombahton in general is quite underestimated right now, maybe because most of the artists still need to understand the power of the classic moombah drum pattern, maybe because it still needs to grow as a genre, maybe because most of the tracks out there are very similar each other; when music producers will start making moombah implementing elements from other kind of bass music (for example, dubstep or uk basses, why not?) this genre will go into an upper level. I think the key is mixing what we already have to create something new.
That’s not the case of “Fiyah,” this time we wanted to make a classic Moombahton song.
TMN: Each of you give us your Top 5 Moombah songs…
Em: 1. J Balvin & Willy William – Mi Gente (Dillon Francis remix)
2. Major Lazer – Particula (ft. DJ Maphorisa, Nasty C, Ice Prince, Patoranking & Jidenna)
3. Bad Royale & Party Favor – BURY (ft. Richie Loop)
4. Party Favor & Dillon Francis – Shut It Down
5. Dillon Francis & Fuego – We The Funk
Bonus: Rickyxsan – This Feeling (ft. Kalibwoy)
Marco:
Herobust – Vertebreaker (Matias Flip)
JSTJR – Fried
Henry Fong & Bad Royale – Rock Ya Hips
Ed Sheeran – Shape Of You (Major Lazer Remix)
Metaljackets & Cannibal – Gata
TMN: Lastly, what else can we expect from each of you, together or individually, this Summer and Fall?
Right now I’m working hard in my studio on a lot of new music and I’ve also many releases ready to come out, from heavy dubstep to future bass, I love bass music in general and I like to make it, in every shade. If you like Fiyah you’ll be happy because some of them are following this style, instead if you are a basshead stay ready for my harder riddim and hybrid stuff. – Marco

[Electronic] Shmuck the Loyal – Not Alone
Shmuck the Loyal has finally followed up with a release after dropping his HISTRIONICS EP nearly five months ago. His retro-inspired original “Not Alone” features many classic sounds from the early days of dance music, as well as samples that kick nostalgia into gear for any gamers.
“Not Alone” doesn’t aim to be a labeled to a certain genre. Instead of bounces through various styles for one fun four minute ride. There is so much going on it almost feels like several songs in one. It’s nice to see Shmuck back at it with such a cool tune that isn’t attempting to ride any popular waves. He’s always done his own thing and you can count on him to keep that up.
