[Indie] TRUDY – Baby I’m Blue

As a former hopeless romantic, it’s understandable why “Baby I’m Blue” instantly latched itself onto those long-lost memories of pining, wishing, and hoping that a special someone would come along for good. Luckily, they did, but that doesn’t mean we can’t still look back on those memories, with Trudy providing the soundtrack.

If you haven’t caught onto this Liverpool/Leeds-based act yet, it’s about time you did. Combining elements of doo-wop, 60’s girls groups, The Beach Boys, and The Strokes, their style has a nostalgic air about it, yet is perfectly suited to please the ears of discerning blogosphere hunters across the globe. “Baby I’m Blue” effortlessly encapsulates those aforementioned elements, offering sometimes smooth, sometimes raucous guitar, fluttering, emotional vocals, and a chorus worthy of a few too many glasses of whiskey.

[Fresh] RJD2 – Peace Of What

If you’re excited that we’re sharing a brand new RJD2 tune, you should probably sit down before continuing onto the next sentence. Not only are you getting an early listen to “Peace of What,” but it also happens to be the lead single from his upcoming sixth album, which drops on March 25th. We know. We’re pretty amped about this too. There’s more though – he’ll be promoting this album with a robust 2016 tour. Now that you’ve let that all sink in, let’s talk about the task at hand.

“Peace of What” is a soulful gem, boasting nostalgic, 90s rap influenced vocals from Jordan Brown. They’re artfully embraced by an array of instruments, including pronounced guitar work, playful percussion, piano, brass, and strings, all expertly crafted into a memorable three and a half minute experience. It’s instantly iconic, adding itself into the ranks of tracks we’ve come to adore from this Ohio-born musician.

The rest of Dame Fortune promises to boast plenty of soul influences, a lot of which came from his stint in Philly.

Living in Philly provided a context for a lot of soul music that I had liked. I didn’t have any cultural context for this music that I liked—it was just music that I had stumbled across as a beat making nerd. Philly was a place where there were enough people who had the same musical vocabulary that I did, which made the music more than something I had just discovered on my own.

[House] liminl – Reach (ft. Rozzi Crane)

A good house tune is a wonderful thing. A great house tune can be tough to come by most of the time. liminl may appear to be a newcomer on SoundCloud, but the mixture of an old school sound and Rozzi Crane‘s mighty vocals works together in perfect tandem to grace our ears with an infectious groove. There’s something to be said about house music grabbing you instantly, as so much of it can be easily forgotten and cast aside as repetitive and trend chasing. This duo capitalizes on extracting the best elements of the genre’s origins and tidying them up into an updated and pristine new package that fits into a mainstage setting as much as a warehouse party. Kick off the second half of your week right with liminl and Rozzi Crane’s “Reach,” and don’t forget to show these two support in any way you can!

JKRS – Dreamin’ [TMN Premiere]

There’s a new act on the scene that goes by the name of JKRS. We are proud to present to you this act’s first single as a Music Ninja Premiere, as it is a cosmic concoction of lush tones and textures that are perfect for this laid-back time of year. “Dreamin'” straddles the line between chilled out trap and future bass with its soft synths and 808 percussion. The highly melodic composition has a some groove to it, making it not only a song you can kick back and just bask in, but also you can get a little sway going if you wanna move. JKRS released this one for free to kick off the project, so make sure to download it. You can be sure more tunes are coming soon, because who starts a project and only releases one song? Nobody. Chris Siegel – Jersey [TMN Premiere]

Milwaukee’s own Chris Siegel is partnering up with the ninjas to premiere his new single entitled “Jersey” today. Chris makes up half of the duo Kiings, which has some new things on the horizon, however that’s not stopping Chris from dishing things out under his own project. With “Jersey” we get a rambunctious style of Jersey club, one that Chris describes as being infused with “90’s R&B, and Timbaland-esque foreign instrumentation.” Certainly anyone can hear just how wild Chris gets with the instrumentation, utilizing several instruments and sounds in his bubbly composition. Chris starts the year of strong with “Jersey,” an official release under Noh Life. If you would like to see Chris live, along with other Noh Life members, then you’re in luck; they will be on tour starting January 14th for almost exactly one month. Don’t miss out! [Indie] Sunflower Bean – Easier Said

Well, they’ve done it again. It hasn’t even been long since we featured them, but Manhattan-based Sunflower Bean has brought us yet another great track– “Easier Said.” This track comes as another teaser leading up to their anticipated album release with Fat Possum Records, Human Ceremony. We’re even bigger fans of this tune than the last we featured, and we quite enjoyed the previous jam.

And just a side note: Fat Possum Records is shaping up to be one of our favorites around here for indie releases. With names like Youth Lagoon and Modest Mouse on their roster, it’s gotten to the point where pretty much anything they release you can count on.

Back to the tune, “Easier Said” opens up with a guitar intro brought by Nick Kivlen that lays a foundation that’s reminiscent of one of our favorite indie bands, DIIV. We’d be content just listening to the guitar for 5 minutes, but front woman Julia Cumming comes in with her characteristically lofty vocals to deliver a harmonious indie jam that’s getting us excited for them to release the rest of their EP. Keep these magic musical beans coming Sunflower Bean.

[Experimental] Arca – Urchin

As we sit here writing this post and listen to Arca’s newest track release, “Urchin”, we’re sort of frightened. For us this isn’t a new feeling when listening to the London-based gender neutral producer’s music in the night, but it is one that we welcome. Arca reminds us that there is beauty in ambiguity and darkness—the feelings many of their tracks leave us with.

After a critically acclaimed EP release with Mutant, we were really happy to see that they’d released another track so soon. After listening to “Urchin” we understand why this one came separately from the epic EP, however. This track embodies an industrially ambient density unlike any of their tracks from the unleashed Mutant, and that was made apparent upon the first listen. Retaining their quintessential qualities of stop-motion aesthetic synths, Arca creates an unprecedented low-end depth in this new track. Please keep releasing like wildfire. We can’t get enough.
