[Video] Deebs & Jarell Perry – Relapse

The duo of Deebs and Jarell Perry proved what can be accomplished when two immensely creative forces collide together with the release of their collaborative Shift EP back in May. After taking their talents on tour across much of the West Coast and Canada, the pairing’s bond has only grown stronger since then and today we bear witness to the latest fruits of their labor in the form of the music video for their standout single “Relapse”. The stunning visuals serve as the directorial debut for fashion photographer/podcast host, Yoshino, whose previous work has been featured in publications like Elle and Flaunt Magazine.

The video starts off solemn and colorless, but signs of fracture start to show as the song builds towards it climax. Almost without warning, everything shatters into a sea of pixels, syncing up perfectly with the song’s urgent synths and Jarell’s ominous vocals. The visual piece serves as the best example of datamoshing that we’ve seen since Kanye West notably used the trippy glitchy effects for his “Welcome To Heartbreak” video back in 2009.

When asked about his vision for the track Perry had this to say about the inspiration behind the visuals:

I’ve seen a lot of close friends, particularly women, deal with limiting beliefs about who they are and who they can be outside of a toxic relationship. It’s a battle they are fighting with themselves, and for me it was important that the visuals represent that tension (and liberation) in a more unconventional way.

[House/Funk] Crew Love – Smokers Delight ft. PillowTalk & Soul Clap

To understand the full capacity of all that is Crew Love, one must understand how intertwined and deep it all really runs. What started as an idea between Wolf + Lamb & Soul Clap and their respective backing labels, has steadily blossomed into one of dance music’s hottest and most recognizable collectives featuring 11 acts, totaling 17  members. After a mini-tour this past Summer, which we got to catch a piece of in Denver back in August, Soul Clap and Wolf + Lamb’s Crew Love collective will release their first collaborative album in early 2016: Based On A True Story, and with the accompanying announcement have also dropped the long-player’s first single “Smokers Delight”. The hazy, funkified debut single is perfect foreshadowing for what we hope to hear from Based on a True Story, combining a very addictive fusion of classic house and classic disco sensibilities with the contemporary edge and swag we’ve become accustomed to from every involved act. “Smoker’s Delight” draws together elements of rap, R&B and the crew’s signature good-time funk on top of those aforementioned dance structures, which results in a tune that you’ll be hard-pressed to shake for at least a few days after first consumption.

Based On A True Story will see release via freshly minted label counterpart Crew Love Records along with the backing support of legendary dance institution !K7, and we’re having a hard time containing our collective excitement towards what will no doubt be one of the hottest dance properties in 2016. Check out the entire track list for Crew Love’s impending debut LP which features 11 track contributions from all 17 members of the US outfit including PillowTalk, Life on Planets, Tanner Ross, No Regular Play, Slow Hands and Nick Monaco; spanning between a mix of solo efforts and collaborative entries. The love-gang has also confirmed they’ll be hitting the road again in summer 2016, though no tour dates have been announced as of yet. [TMN Premiere] Tyler Hawkins – From That Land (EP)

You might recognize the name Ninety if you’ve been following us over the last couple years. The Bay Area-based duo, which consists of Tyler Hawkins and Mikey C the Man (MCM), first caught our attention in 2014 with their unique brand of sunny, west-coast hip-hop. Today, we’re excited to bring you the premiere of emcee Tyler Hawkins’ debut EP, which both establishes and serves as the perfect introduction to his sound.

With all production handled in-house by MCM (of Ninety) and oft-collaborator Yung H33M, From That Land plays out like a dedication to the past, present and future of the Bay’s hip-hop scene. Each of the project’s seven tracks possesses its own vibe without losing site of that broader mindset. Laid-back, classic-styled cuts like the “The Come Up and “101 (Cruisin’)” find contrast on harder-hitting tracks like “Options,” which has a subwoofer-rattling bassline.

Aside from a diverse set of beats, Hawkins’ various emotive flows, which hit their most ambitious on “Dreamin,” are what truly tie the project together and further contribute to that overall Bay sound. The finale, “The People,” with its addicting Last Lynx sample sees him taking that inspiration a step further carving out a sound all his own.

Flux Pavilion and Matthew Koma – Emotional (G Buck Remix Feat. OnCue) [TMN PREMIERE]

Just a few days ago, we brought you an exclusive interview with our Resident Artist of the Month – the legendary Flux Pavilion. Early on in that interview, we brought up one of our favorite songs from his recently released album. Which one, you ask? “Emotional,” which features vocals from dance music journeyman Matthew Koma.

Originally sporting a tasty future bass styling, today’s premiere brings an entirely new persona via Philly-based producer G Buck. Roping in some additional vocals from Brooklyn resident OnCue, the two have crafted a tune that not only pays an artful homage to the original, but also to Flux’s iconic sound as well.

Alongside well-crafted samples of Koma’s original lyrics and the added vocal flair from OnCue, this remix also boasts some impressive percussion work, a head-banging bassline, and memorable, razor-sharp synths. All of those elements culminate effortlessly, providing listeners with something that’s both cooler than the other side of the pillow and perfectly aggressive for any upcoming late-night endeavors.

[House] Robyn & La Bagatelle Magique – Love is Free (Moon Boots Remix)

As the TMN team works hard on putting together our end of the year lists, Moon Boots is a name fresh in our minds. The NYC deep house/nu-disco producer has made a name for himself this year providing us with both remixes and originals with endless replay value. To round the year out, he’s dropped a remix of Robyn & La Bagatelle Magique’s “Love is Free” injecting it with his groovy ethos. While the original is a hard-hitting, and fantastic, electro-pop tune, Moon Boots switches it up with a four-on-the-floor backdrop and a series of bouncy synths. It’s a remix that works equally well on and off the dance floor. Give it a peep above.

Some people are better at certain things than others. That’s just the way life goes. Like the exquisite library of artists we’ve have accumulated in our indie dojos. While most of us only dream of being as talented as those we lend an ear to, we shouldn’t be too hard on ourselves for not being able to belt a note or strum a guitar. If anything, we are AWESOME at listening to the Indie Dojos. Bonafide Pros. And without us bonafide pros, what is an artist really? It takes 2 to tango friends, and we are more than happy to let those with musical talent take the lead.
