[House] Danny Darko feat. Mary Dee – Another Day In Paradise

At the end of May, the album YOUTH by Danny Darko was released to the world. Recently, a remix competition was put together for one of the singles off the project, “Another Day In Paradise” featuring Mary Dee. Among the eleven singles on the album, they wanted to give producers a chance to reinvent it.

“Another Day In Paradise” is a nu-disco style record that pays homage to older styles of progressive/disco house. A strong vocal performance by Mary Dee is backed by pleasurable piano chords and smooth grooves. Together Danny and Mary truly paint a sonic picture of paradise with their creation, which is why this single was one of the most loved songs on the album. Which, if you haven’t checked it out, you’ll need to hit up iTunes to peep in its entirety. Stream the single today, and if you’re a producer, go on a give the competition a go. You never know what will happen! Maybe an official release on Onyx Music

[Electronic] DUX – Diana

A newer artist on the scene, DUX, has caught our attention with the new single “Diana.” Dux’s unique style is sure to capture your attention, and after diving in to this single, you’re going to want to check out the few other ones on his Soundcloud.

“Diana” starts off as an atmospheric, cinematic piece that morphs into a bubbly, but dark, record. If you are wondering why it is called “Diana,” the pitched-down samples from “I’m Coming Out” is what will tip you off to the answer. DUX’s industrial piece is one of those tracks that you’re going to throw on repeat in several circumstances, whether you are working, studying or just taking some time to space out and relax. “Diana” sets the perfect mood to kick back to, and it’s immersive sound is something you can surely lose yourself in. Check it out today and stay tuned for more works from DUX.

Viceroy discusses his roots, the rat race, and a refreshing Pimm’s Cup [TMN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW]

It wouldn’t be a proper Music Ninja Residency without a lengthy chat with our featured artist. As you’re already aware, we brought in the Sultan Of Summer to help us kick off the best season of the year and before the most iconic summer holiday, we’re offering up a little insight into the man behind Viceroy.

TMN: Hey Austen – thanks for taking some time to sit down with us today. How’s the start of your summer going so far?

Viceroy: So far, so good! San Francisco has not your normal summer weather. I don’t know if you’re too familiar with how our weather patterns work. We have an Indian summer that’s September and October, and our coldest part of the year is actually regular summer. But, it’s been unbelievable, so far. It’s made it hard to want to do any work.

TMN: We’re really excited to have you as our Resident Artist this month. We looked back, and we’ve been covering you for the past four years. Is it hard to believe that you’ve been at it for that long?

Viceory: Yeah – it’s dawned on me that I’ve been at it for that long. The landscape has changed so much since I started. It’s a little more of a rat race than it ever used to be, but it’s still exciting and fun.

TMN: Let’s go back a little bit further than when you started getting blog coverage. How did the “Viceroy” sound come to be? Can you shed some light on your musical history?

Viceroy: I played instruments when I was growing up, and everything like that – guitar, bass, and that kind of stuff. In 2009 I studied abroad in Rome, and that was before electronic music took off on a mainstream level in the United States.

I was drunk the second week of school and at some sort of club or lounge with my friends, and I told one of the DJs, “I want a job here!” I was completely wasted. I went and talked to the manager and he gave me a job on Tuesday nights bringing in Americans. I wake up the next night and was like, “oh my god, I’ve never DJ’d or promoted before. What the hell am I doing?”

I had just recently got Ableton and was just starting to mess around with stuff. I hadn’t made any music on it. Anyways, the parties started going really well. I was playing blog house and nu-disco, and all that kind of good stuff.

After that, I got a passion for electronic music. The first thing I started doing was mash-ups. It’s a really good starting point while learning Ableton. I started that in college after I left from studying abroad. I got really sick of it because it was a saturated market – it’s not hard to make a mashup, generally speaking.

In December of 2010, I asked myself what I liked. I liked disco, I liked French house, and so on. In February of 2011, I released a four-song EP with this small label called Tri-Disco Club. It was a very French disco EP – very sample based. That was the beginning of SoundCloud artists and that era. Then, it took off from there and then I decided I wanted to make music that wasn’t sample based. That’s where I came up with my sound, which now gets labeled as tropical house, but back then it was just what I was doing.

TMN: Through the years, you’ve remixed artists from all kinds of genres, including Katy Perry, Wiz Khalifa, and St. Lucia. What’s your project selection like?

Viceroy: Originally, it was remixing popular songs, because that’s going to get me more traction and showcase my sound. I knew it would get more attention. Once I got my feet on the ground, that’s when I started getting paid to do remixes. When you start off, you do what you can do. Now, I’ll get offers to do a remix and I have to see if that’s something that makes sense for me. If I can actually do something with it.

TMN: Do ever find yourself wanting to just dial up a bootleg? You probably do some for your set, right?

Viceroy: Yeah, I make edits like that. What’s great with the Jet Life series is that I’m able to go to the label and say, “hey, I’m going to do this.” Whether it’s out for free, or not, I’m able to do those.

TMN: You cut your teeth during the golden age of SoundCloud, when producers didn’t have to worry as much about posting bootlegs. Do you feel like the road to you success would have been more difficult had you started Viceroy more recently?

Viceroy: Oh, for sure. I think about it all the time, actually. I would not want to get into the music game right now, to be honest. It’s too much of a rat race. There are ways around the bootleg thing, to make it legal and kosher. But, it’s a pain in the ass now. There are too many people. There weren’t as many people trying to do what we’re doing. Now you have all of these artists that are coming up left and right. Which isn’t bad. It’s great that there’s more good music around. But, there’s a lot more garbage going around, so you have to weed through it. There’s a lot of nonsense you have to deal with, like social media and stuff like that.

TMN:How did you coin your phrase “Summertime all the time” and nickname “Sultan of Summer?”

Viceroy: The Sultan of Summer was later on, but everything I’ve done for my brand has been very organic. None of its been this big, business, money-making concept that I need to be very meticulous about. It’s not like that at all. And, that kind of came up in my head out of nowhere.

TMN: It seems like you’re always having fun with it.

Viceroy: It’s not really about taking myself seriously. That’s the majority of my brand.

TMN: Your Chubbies partnership is spot on. How did that come up?

Viceroy: I hadn’t realized they were in San Francisco, and my buddy told me they were here. Again, this was another very organic thing. So, I shot them an email and we had a phone call. A couple months later, they wanted to partner up. It’s been going really well! They’re great people – the kind you want to hang out with after work. I can’t think of a better combination.

TMN: What’s on deck for 2016? You have a track coming out later this month, but what’s beyond that?

Viceroy: That new track is part of a new EP that’s coming out in mid-January. The things I’ve been making have been more wide-ranging than just house. This one is kind of downtempo. The other ones are reggae, you know, just hitting on all the things that encompass my brand. I’m doing another Jet Life right now and another mixtape. Doing the stuff that the fans want. My clothing line is going to come out later this summer. Yeah! I’m excited!

TMN: Sounds like you have your work cut out for you. At the end of each interview, we like to change things up with a few personal questions for fun. Since you’re the Sultan of Summer, this is an all summer addition. We’ll start with this – what’s your favorite warm-weather cocktail?

Viceroy: Would you consider a Pimm’s Cup a summer drink? I think so. It’s definitely my favorite right now.

TMN: The best beach vacation destination is ______

Viceroy: Amalfi Coast in Italy.

TMN: You’re stuck on a deserted island, but can somehow send for three things. What would you ask for?

Viceroy: Material Goods?

TMN: Yep. And no cheating with something like a helicopter or boat.

Viceroy: A pineapple, unless they’re already on there. A solar panel charger for my laptop, so I could make music. And a friend! Someone I can hang out with.

[Future] Chris Brown – Yo (Excuse Me Miss) [SMLE Remix]

It’s Thursday, and all we can do is watch for the clock to hit the minute that means we can escape from our duties, get ourselves home and sprawl out on the couch. Hey, maybe we’ll even indulge ourselves with a soothing glass of wine or whiskey. But while you’re pouring that glass or getting into that comfortable position on the sofa, why not provide you with a tune that will expedite the process of replenishing the energy in your exhausted bodies.

Once again, SMLE is back with another tune that leaves listeners with ear to ear grins. This time around they remix an oldie but goodie, Chris Brown’s sensual ‘Yo (Excuse Me Miss).’ The duo spins the r&b original into their familiar jazz-infused futuristic sound, providing just the right amount of intensity through funky harmonies and stimulating percussion, without giving too much change to the framework of the classic radio hit. Releasing the remix in the midst of festival season, make sure to catch SMLE perform it live during their debut set at Gridlife, along with other fests such as Moonrise and the mainstage of Dancefestiopia on Sunday.

Very soon, MopTop will be releasing his EP entitled Love. Today, we share with you the premiere of one of the singles off the project that features the Chicago vocalist Beata. Enter the dojo, and get yourself ready for “Who We Were.”

After hearing that MopTop would be releasing Love, we were highly interested in hearing what direction the dynamic producer would be taking with it. We got an early listen, and decided to share “Who We Were” with you. It’s a laidback house track with pop influences that has the New York musician going full on melodic. Beata’s vocal performance strikes deep, and leaves a memorable imprint with the listener. After listening through the entire song, it doesn’t feel like five minutes just passed. MopTop and Beata created something truly emotional and meaningful with this song. Stream it today and prepare yourself for the rest of the EP, to be released in July.

Sleepers’ Reign – King Into Delight [TMN PREMIERE]

We were only a minute through “King Into Delight” when we realized we had something exceptional on our hands. The radiating glow of calculated layers are more than enough to rope any listener in, but what follows is what will keep you coming back again and again.

This wonderfully otherworldly listening experience is coming your way via the Belgian-based experimental-pop group known as Sleeper’s Reign, who are getting ready to release their debut album come September through Sialia Records.

While we haven’t been privy to the rest of the collection, “King Into Delight” should be more than enough to pique your interest with its gorgeous mixture of psychedelic atmospherics and catchy-as-hell pop sensibilities. At times, you’ll find they flirt with nuances of acts like Mew and Passion Pit, while still maintaining their own unique sound.

The album is about sincere, honest issues that everybody has to deal with on their road to maturity. A willingness to expose oneself poetically, without making it any bigger than it really is, that is what it is about. – Sleeper’s Reign

Tom Speight – Falling [TMN VIDEO PREMIERE]

Around the same time our wandering minds bring us to visions of roaring campfires on warm summer nights, witnessing a circle of friends passing cold beers and a bottle of bourbon, we start wondering when those heart-warming, picture-perfect folk songs will come along to provide the perfect soundtrack for those legendary experiences. Sometimes we find them before the sun peeks its head through the grey blanketed skies of winter. Sometimes they pop up right before fall, making us wish we could have had it that much earlier. Today, we’re experiencing one of those tracks, and it’s coming in at just the right time.

Releasing just a month ago, Tom Speight’s “Falling” is an endearing indie folk gem that leaves listeners wonderfully inspired, casually calculating their next adventure. Set to the backdrop of subtle finger-picking, larger-than-life strings, and rhythmic claps, it will carefully crawl under your skin, leaving you beaming, toothy grin spread across your face.

Beyond just the track, we also have an exclusive first look at the music video, which features April Pearson (Skins) and David Atkins (Hollyoaks). Take a gander below, then start making plans for one of those epic summer adventures.

VOKES (ft. Nevve) – Backroad [TMN PREMIERE]

There’s nothing quite like taking a long drive on a warm summer night, letting your hand flow up and down along with the current outside your window as your navigate through wide open straights and windy curves. And, if you’re anything like us, you’re always looking for laidback jams to help soundtrack that scene. Luckily for us all, LA-based VOKES is dropping the fourth and final track from his debut EP, Fractalism, and it’s absolutely perfect for those late-night excursions.

This delightful collaboration with fellow Angelino Nevve deserves your attention this summer for a multitude of reasons. Musically, the track brings in lush future-style synths that beckon back on VOKES upbringing in Malibu, California, adding to the complex personality of the track. Coupled with those synths are a prominent, buzzy bassline, carefully placed percussion, and a jazzy guitar breakdown, all of which provide the perfect backdrop for the interchanging verses from both VOKES and Nevve.

Before you jump in the car to enjoy this little beauty out on the road, head over and follow VOKES on Facebook so you can keep up with future releases.

[Electronic] Moods. – A Beautiful Mind EP

Nick Moods, aka Moods., of Rotterdam just caught our attention in a big way with his A Beautiful Mind EP. The four track project is as dynamic as it is, well, beautiful. Once your ears are privy to the delights of this EP, you’ll know just why Boogie Angst got their hands on this release.

The truth is, this isn’t Moods. and Boogie Angst’s first rodeo together. They’ve previously partnered on projects, but there’s something special about A Beautiful Mind. Each single is a journey within itself that you want to relive over and over. The problem is, you want all of them, but can only choose one at a time. The title track starts off with its light-hearted allure that sets the stage for the other singles. “How I Feel” featuring Sam Wills is the chillest tune on the project, with a soulful jazzy sensibility that will grab the attention of individuals who don’t even call themselves fans of electronic music. Thirdly, we come across “Evolve,” a groovy laid-back hit that keeps the tone that the previous record had. However, once we reach the closing single, the mood shifts to a more up-beat one with “The Hero.” It’s hard to pick a favorite; we’re still going back and forth between them all. Time for you to give it a go and join the conversation around Moods. majestic EP, which you can purchase today.

[House] Kav Verhouzer & Palm Trees – In My Arms

Kav Verhouzer has done it again. This time the fun-loving producer partnered up with Palm Trees to create the original single “In My Arms,” released on Epic Amsterdam. If you thought house music was getting too deep, too dark or too heavy, then Kav is a godsend, and “In My Arms” is one of his best creations yet.

“In My Arms” is a jolly song that is heavily influenced by pop music, but at its heart it is a house record. Kav and Palm Trees manage to work together in tandem as though they have done it a million times before. Everything about this song sounds so fluid and organic. You can’t help but to feel good while you are listening and grooving along to the joyous chords and jubilant melodies. It’s Summer time, and those hot playlists are getting filled up real quick, but “In My Arms” is going to be a special track within those collections. It’s perfect for fun times outdoors with good company. Don’t sleep on this one!

[Music Video] Mosimann feat. Uhre – The Gifted One

When you think of lyric videos, what comes to mind is generally a poorly made clip hosted on some fans Youtube account. Well, today that’s not the case with Mosimann‘s video for “The Gifted One” featuring Uhre. Instead of boring fonts on a black background, we get an immersive video that is anything but ordinary.

The French Dj/producer put together not only a cool video, but it goes to an equally impressive single. “The Gifted One” is an indie dance meets French house concoction whose catchy characteristics are out of this world. You’ll be grooving along as you get a play-by-play of the lyrics. More than that, you’ll be entertained by the stunning visuals that this video has to offer. For all intents and purposes, this is a full blown music video; it just happens to have the lyrics blasted on the screen as well. Check it out below, and head over to iTunes for a copy.

[Trap/Dubstep] Pusher – Clear Feat. Mothica (PatrickReza Remix)

If you’ve been a steady reader of The Music Ninja, you know we can’t get enough PatrickReza. When we heard he was putting out an official remix of “Clear” by Pusher and Mothica, we were so ready. Now that it’s here, any expectations we had of its quality were shattered in the best way possible.

Patrick has been someone whose melodic dubstep style has been hailed as one of the best, but his harder tracks are undeniably special. Possibly his best yet, this remix takes a hybrid stance between trap and dubstep, bringing the best of both worlds into one. If you haven’t heard this original, then Mothica’s performance is going to be one aspect of this record that shines on this one; which is saying a lot, because what Patrick did is so good that it’s almost terrifying. If you’re looking for your next anthem to rage to, Patrick has you covered with his take on “Clear.” Check it out today and don’t sleep on this, grab a copy through iTunes, where you can check out the other remixes too!

[Electronic] Ninth Parallel – Infinitum

Just when you may have thought he was gone for good, Ninth Parallel returns. Designating ther right amount of time to create and diligently following the most natural process possible is instrumental during an absence, and that’s exactly what is portrayed with “Infinitum”. Throughout the entire seven minute creation, you’re guided into a nostalgic journey of hard-hitting electro, ethereal and bright melodies, and an emotional appeal that hearkens back to the heavier material from Porter Robinson‘s early work. Ninth Parallel supplements the tune with a heartfelt note, stating:

I went through a lot of dark depression, anxiety, and turmoil while writing this song. It fundamentally changed me as a person and as an artist. My experience with it over the past two years changed my perspective on how to treat the process of writing music, how to trust myself better, and how to feel fulfilled doing what I love to do.

Even with what some would call an “older” sound, “Infinitum” doesn’t flinch its ability to make you reflect on a different time in electronic music and even a different time in life entirely. Sometimes the most unlikely things from the past make you optimistic about the future. “Infinitum” is also available on Spotify.

[Get Crunk] Friday Party Playlist (Vol 201)

Last week we celebrated the 200th volume of our Friday Party Playlist. We didn’t stop there, as we have another handful of free downloads for you this Friday. Each week it’s hard to narrow it down to a dozen records, but this week was exceptionally so. There were just so many great ones, even Skrillex dropped a freebie this week. However, we managed to filter through them all and the result are the twelve tracks you will find below. Within the list are creations from the likes of Bright Lights, Convex, Dirt Monkey, Michael White, YOOKiE and more. Check them all out, and enjoy yourself a nice warm weekend if you’re in the Northern hemisphere, and if you’re in the Southern; we hope these records heat you up. [Trap] Mikey Ceaser – Carried Away (Prod. Grabbitz & Ray Volpe)

Chances are you will get “Carried Away” with listening to Mikey Ceaser‘s new single. The trap single is better than any hip-hop you’ll find on the radio, thanks to Mikey’s fire rhymes and the instrumental created by the electronic heavyweights Grabbitz and Ray Volpe.

Sometimes when electronic producers recruit a rapper or vice versa, the performances can be a bit lackluster, instead of each act amplifying the other. In the case of “Carried Away,” everyone exponentially strengthens each other with the result being one of this year’s dopest records. Grabbitz and Ray’s hybrid instrumental is top shelf; these two together are something special. Add Mikey Ceaser on top with his party-starting performance and you have a recipe for more than just success. This tune would be worth any purchase price a digital store could charge, but instead the three acts are giving this one out for free.

[Electronic] Christian Loffler – Licht

German-based producer Christian Loffler stirred up quite the single this month. His new track “Licht” exposed a sound that’s hard to compare with much else we’ve heard. He’s been quoted as describing his music as “melancholic but euphoric,” and it’s a spot-on description of the sound.

Utilizing a combination of instrumental recordings and DJ effects, Loffler fuses the outside world with the digital world. His layers of tropical tremolos take turns playing the leading role of the track with the sound of eerily peaceful bells, like ones you’d hear as the wind blows through a vacant yard in a rural train station. Our favorite part about this track though is definitely the persistent static leftover of his tremolo effects, placing a veil of “shh”-ing sounds over the entirety of the work that resemble the constant dull roar of the ocean. All tied together with a longingly romantic vocal sample, this track feels like a tale of heartbreak in the misty tropics. Can’t say we’ve really felt that vibe before until now, but we’re big fans.

[Indie Dance] Attom – Better (Radio Edit)

Did Attom just deliver a radio-ready hit? We think so. The Duluth producer’s collaboration with Justin Stein on “Better” nothing short of phenomenal. Once you have a listen, chances are you’ll be feeling the same way.

“Better” is a great song on every level. Attom’s production is top notch, from both the compositional perspective as well the technical one. He laid the groundwork for Justin Stein to come in and deliver a powerful, poppy performance that will have you singing along by the end of your first listen through. As a new signee to MFN Music/ Ultra Music, this is his debut for the new direction that he will be taking. With all of the labels resources and Attom’s crossover talents, he’s sure to make some waves throughout the rest of the year and on. “Better” is currently available for purchase through several digital stores, so head to this link to get your copy from the shop of your choice.

Mayowa – Fight This Feeling (Prod. Milo Mills) [TMN EXCLUSIVE PREMIERE]

It’s been a while since we last heard from Mayowa (slightly over a year in fact), and a lot has changed in that time. For starters, he’s since opted to use his full first name, adding the “wa” onto Mayo in an effort to get back to his Nigerian roots. Also, after an extended stay in the City of Angels, the Chicago native is back to turn things up in his hometown. Despite the long hiatus, Mayowa is picking up right where he left off, reuniting with frequent collaborator Milo Mills for a bouncy new cut titled “Fight This Feeling”.

Aside from being the potential song of the summer, the genre-bending single also serves as an ode to independent women everywhere, with Mayowa expressing his admiration for one lady in particular, while also urging her to toss out all her inhibitions. Featuring a sample of “Moments of Love” by Art Of Noise, the track itself blends together an eclectic mix of hip-hop, R&B and future bass, as the talented rapper/singer constantly shifts gears throughout–which makes sense when you consider his main goal with his music:

I enjoy stepping outside of my comfort zone and experimenting with different styles. I don’t want to be held in the box of just ‘hip-hop.’

As we mentioned, Mayowa recently made his return back to Chicago, and in order to celebrate his homecoming he’s putting together a show this Friday at Home Bar called “Lituation”, which promises to be a lit situation. If you’re in town make sure to snag some tickets for the show right here.

[Alternative Pop] Tigers Are Bad For Horses – Embers

First things first. Tigers Are Bad For Horses is a ridiculously awesome band name. Despite what you might be picturing music-wise with this sort of name, these two craft a soulful and electric sound that pulls together the strongest traits of Tom Misch and Oh Wonder into a satisfying union.

“Embers” glides along with lush synths, pining and harmonized vocals, and a matured sense of cool that grabs your attention before you really even begin to register it. Captivating hardly begins to describe it, and Tigers Are Bad For Horses may just have a defining tune on their hands here. “Embers” simply is three and a half minutes of pleasantries that you can appreciate anywhere and everywhere. Close your eyes and enjoy.

[Indie Electronic] Deep Dark Blue – Atoms

Deep Dark Blue is aptly named. “Atoms” proves this without a shred of doubt. Washed over with waves of reverb, lightly harmonized vocals, and a slight Pink Floyd influence, this is the sort of song that immediately sticks with you after the first listen. It’s downright beautiful. It’s enchanting without being overzealous. You can get lost within every single crash of the drums and find yourself swept up in the current of the celestial bliss created from the very start of the song. It’s not very often we’re struck silent by a tune, but something about “Atoms’ truly is breathtaking. Give yourself some time, grab your good headphones, and mull over life with this gorgeous tune. You’ll like what you hear.

[Electronic] HONNE & Izzy Bizu – Someone That Loves You (Nicolas Haelg Remix)

“Someone That Love You” is an absolute smash of a single. Seeing HONNE and Izzy Bizu working together is already an exciting enough fact on its own, but now the remixes have arrived and Nicolas Haelg has delivered his signature indie-dance style to this sunny tune. It goes without saying that the festival potential of this song is off the charts, and the overall tone epitomizes a sunny summer day out by the pool or on the lake. If you’re looking for chance to just feel GOOD, throw this on and you’re sure to get a smile on your face. Bust out the umbrella drinks, because Nicolas Haelg is here to usher in the warm weather right.

Hidden Charms – Cannonball [VIDEO PREMIERE]

It only took one trip through “Cannonball” before we caught ourselves in a daydream, imagining ourselves adorned with half-cocked sunglasses across the brim of our nose, slowly marching to the swagger of the emphatic bass line. Once we stepped back into reality, we, of course, realized we’re nowhere close to being as cool as Hidden Charms made us feel for those three minutes. But, it was a blast while it lasted.

If this is the first time you’re hearing the growing rumblings of London-based Hidden Charms, you’re in for one hell of a treat. With delightfully strained vocals treated with a proper amount of distortion, calculated percussion work, and screeching guitars worthy of the finest horror films, this garage rock four-piece has a sound that is quickly catching fire with rock lovers around the globe, including the likes of Zane Lowe (Beats 1), Annie Mac (Radio 1) and Huw Stephens (Radio 1).

Today, we’re offering up a first look at the official music video, which is as wonderfully dark as the vibe of the tune itself. Take a gander below, then pick out a show from their tour dates and head out to catch them live. We can pretty much guarantee you’ll have a top-notch evening.

[Electronic] Ghost Loft – Seconds (Nick AM Remix)

You may remember Nick AM from his previous original single we covered, Veronica, but if not, he’s got another solid remix out for us to enjoy. Shifting away from his usual deep house and techno techniques, Nick AM flips Ghost Loft into a spacey and chopped up club-influenced affair that thrives on using the spaces between the notes as much (if not more) than the notes themselves. There’s more going on here than a simple remix, and that’s certainly evident from the description of the tune on SoundCloud, which reads:

I heard Ghost Loft’s original out one night, and the lyrics and noir vibe painted a picture of a certain time in my life. I feel like music is the most powerful when it relates to us and “Seconds” reminded me that you can always find your way out of a dark place.

We felt that sentiment instantly. Grab yourself a free download and soak this one up when your feeling a little pensive.

[Experimental] POLO – greta

POLO is no stranger here at The Music Ninja. He continues to shape-shift and delve into all types of genre hybrids, and “greta” is a prime example of his dive into a more experimental approach. Constructed as an ode to his significant other, this song juggles emotional weight, jittery and sporadic synth stabs, and a powerful sense of passion that rattles your speakers while somehow also tugging at your heartstrings. It’s jarring in the best way. “greta” is just a taste of what’s to come as POLO has schedule weekly releases to be part of an upcoming album that’s sure to confuse and intrigue simultaneously. He’s created quite a style for himself, and we’re always ready for more.

[House] Suken – Linear Love Story EP

One of the best feelings in the world is coming across a new artist that just shreds. So was the case when we came across the French artist Suken. This cat is the real deal. His disco-meets-electro vibes are off the charts. He’s been doing his thing for close to a year now, but his debut EP, Linear Love Story, just dropped.

Linear Love Story is comprised of three singles and an outro. From the get go with the title track, you are sucked in 100%. You don’t wanna let go. Without hesitation, you hit the repeat all, because you just know you are in for a treat. Next, you’re met with “Space Opera” which is equally as impressive. Third on the list is “Oddity” a midway point between the two previous styles presented on the project. With the outro, the first half is an ambient masterpiece that leads into the second part of the song, which carries a totally different style than any other portion of this EP. Suken did a hell of a job with Linear Love Story, and we’re glad he did. Grab the project off his Bandcamp page today.

[Alternative/Rock] Agelast – A Different Time

On April 26th, we wrote about the debut single from a brand new band called Agelast. Today, we are happy to present to you their follow up single entitled “A Different Time.”

With “Fever” we were met with a blend of rock and indie, but with “A Different Time” the boys bring pop rock to the next level. With riveting guitar riffs and memorable lyrics, Agelast show give us the second piece of evidence as to why they are nothing but legit. Devin and Jonathan are extremely talented creators who got to collaborate with some other talented songwriters to make this single what it is. And what it is, is magnificent. As if things couldn’t get any better, Agelast is giving this single away for free through their website. We can’t wait to hear what else is in store for the band, especially when it comes to live shows, because we’re already interested in tickets. Chances are, you will be too after giving this single a listen.

[Pop] Luna Shadows – Waves

On July 1st, Luna Shadows is giving the world a gift, despite it being her own Birthday. The Summertime EP is going to be a special project for Luna, as it is her debut EP. Over the past few months, we’ve heard single after single, and the last one is finally here.

“Waves” is the fourth and final single from Luna Shadows that will make up her upcoming EP. The three previous tracks were absolutely phenomenal, but “Waves” may be the best one yet. She doesn’t stray from her dark, poppy style, but there’s just something extraordinary about this one. It’s not far-fetched that “Waves” could be a radio hit, as it has everything you look for in a smash record. We were already ready for the EP to drop, but now, are mouths are watering and our patience is no more. Until July 1st, you bet we’ll be streaming this an ungodly amount of times. We hope you will too! “Waves” is currently available on iTunes, along with the EP pre-order.

[Festival Preview] HARD Summer 2016 – July 30/31 @ Auto Club Speedway, Fontana

Our favorite festival in Southern California is around the corner once again. We were absolutely blown away by last year’s HARD Summer, but 2016’s event is only going to be bigger and better! There is a couple of major changes in the festival this year, including the switch of venue and its addition as a two-day camping festival. That’s right – there’s camping available and it’s definitely going to fuel the festival vibe and spirit. In terms of location, HARD 2016 is taking place in the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, just east of the Pomona Fairplex (last year’s venue). Its move to the new location helps cope with the camping option and allows even more guests inside the festival. It’s definitely a giant step-up from the last HARD Summer.

Now moving on to the lineup. It’s everything we desire and more. It is a great mix between electronic and hip-hop acts, with a stacked roster of up and coming artists. Huge names like Flosstradamus, Medeon and Travis Scott would headline Saturday’s festival, together with talents like Rezz, Louis The Child, Jerry Folk, Slushii and many others who are shaping the current dance scene. Founder of Hard, Gary Richards a.k.a Destructo would also participate as the tradition continues. Following an epic performance from this year’s Coachella, Ice Cube would be closing out the night and would sure to turn up the heat in Fontana by a few more notches.

Sunday’s lineup is equally as awesome as Saturday’s. Electronic powerhouses like Dillon Francis and Zeds Dead will be returning to Hard Summer for the second straight year. Also, genius producer Porter Robinson is moved from Saturday to the Sunday lineup due to a scheduling conflict. Other popular electronic acts like Jai Wolf, Kaytranada and Mura Masa would also be participating in this giant dance galore. AC Slater, Boys Noize and Kill The Noise are some of the veterans in their respective genre that will be attending the festival. To top it all off, Major Lazer will be sure to conclude the night with an electrifying performance.

It’s safe to say that Hard Summer is an event you can’t miss. To get you pumped up when July 30 comes, we’ve prepared a playlist featuring some of the acts in the lineup. Peep it below and we’ll see you all there!

Saturday Selection Vol. 11: Alizzz

Saturday Selection Template

Saturday Selection is getting a little bit of a makeover. Instead of five songs you may have missed or need to hear from the previous week, we’re looking to explore some of the best highlights of a single artist or group. Our first focus will cover Barcelona native Alizz and his unpredictable yet undeniable combination of R&B, club, and pop music that he’s crafted into his own signature style.

Knowing when to shift in a new direction musically is an inherent skill than isn’t easy to pick up on most of the time, but Alizz has managed to score releases on Jeffree’s, Arkestra, and Moving Castle without slowing down or compromising his sound. His recent work with Santell is a testament to his ability to nail down and push the possibilities of R&B, while his foray into more of a pop sound is prime material that certainly defines itself as a standout release in the Moving Castle discography. Even with his massive tune “In Chains”, Alizzz stays dynamic and takes care to constantly transform and improve from song to song. When it comes to reformulating genres and creating something fresh, Alizzz comes to mind every time.

Unified Highway – My Only (Liquid Stranger Remix) [TMN Premiere]

One of bass music’s heavy hitting veterans is coming forth with an official remix for Unified Highway. Liquid Stranger entered the dojo for the premiere of the official flip of “My Only.” The hybrid head dished out another tune that DJs and fans will be playing out everywhere.

The soulful reggae original was taken by the Scottsdale producer and turned into a hybrid trapstyle hit. The timing of this track couldn’t be more perfect, as EDC is here and its sound couldn’t be more appropriate for the gigantic festival. The newly formed “My Only” has the perfect amount of bass and swagger, emanating the groovy ebb & flow that makes these type of records so enjoyable. When dance meets hip-hop, it’s a beautiful thing, but this remix is so much more than that. Take a listen for yourself, and know that you’re hearing it first in the dojo!

It’s Summertime All the Time with Viceroy [TMN RESIDENCY]

With the first official day right around the corner, we felt like it was the perfect time to rope in one of our favorite, warm-weather artists into our Artist Residency program. After all, it is summertime all the time when it comes to Viceroy.

With a list of chart-topping, play-count-racking jams longer than those brutal winter months we just went through, this floral shirt-adorned San Franciscan has continually impressed us throughout the years, starting all the way back in 2012. Given the fact that we’ve had this four-year adoration for the Sultan of Summer, we’re thrilled to have him onboard.

As you wait patiently for those exclusive pieces to drop, week-by-week, please grab a tropical cocktail, your favorite stunners and flip flops, and press play below. This little collection should be more than enough to help get you in the mood for the best season.

Miki Rose – Right There (prod. By Giorgio Oehlers) [TMN PREMIERE]

If you weren’t planning on feeling sexy today, you might want to do some rescheduling because that’s about to change with this first cut off of Miki Rose‘s forthcoming EP. We’ve been lucky enough to catch and cover some of her previous work with El. Train and Toolbox, so it goes without saying that we’re extremely delighted to give you the first look into her solo project with Darker Than Wax.

“Right There” reflects a miraculous blend of R&B, soul, and electronic influences that exude an unashamed and warranted sense of pride that Miki has in her work. The groove is contagious. It shakes you up just right and gets under your skin in the best of ways. The slick and sensual delivery of every line isn’t the only treat in this tune, as the prowess of Giorgio Oehlers is equally put on display with his magnificent instrumentation. You can instantly and easily lose yourself between the keys and Miki’s voice alone, but the entire song stands as a triumph for her incipient XOXO EP. Good luck not breaking a little sweat listening to this one.

[R&B/Soul] The Flavr Blue – Wit It (Prod. by Sweater Beats)

If you don’t get “Wit It” you are missing out. When we heard Sweater Beats produced this record, we were enticed and once our ears met up with The Flavr Blue record, we were blown away. If you’re looking for a huge R&B tune to shake up your Summer, then you’re in luck. It’s here.

“Wit It” is nothing short of extraordinary. Once you hear it for yourself, you’ll understand exactly why Macklemore and Ryan Lewis took these four on tour. After meeting through Red Bull Sound Select, The Flavr Blue and Sweater Beats partnered up to put this single together, and we’re beyond glad they did. With all of the electronic music festivals that have been taking place, EDM has been at the forefront of music at the moment, but The Flavr Blue come in to show you just what can be cooked up outside that realm. [House] Bat For Lashes – Sunday Love (Icarus Remix)

Icarus is one of the most impressive up and coming producer duos you will currently find dishing out tracks. They recently came out with an EP with some remixes, and now they’re already back with another single, a remix of Bat For Lashes‘ “Sunday Love.”

The indie pop single was an astonishing record that Bat For Lashes has unleashed a video for, as well as played at Coachella this year. Now we have a deep, brooding flip of the song that will have clubs everywhere on their feet and dancing. Icarus keeps the dark vibe of the original, but manages to make their version one that anybody can groove to. They started with the alluring vocal and managed to create a web of tones and melodies that grip your ears and never let go. Check out the stream of the remix and stay tuned for when it’s available to the public.

[Chill/Electronic] Golden Vessel – Wave

Some magical songs seem to pull their listener into a saccharine sweet pool of sound, while also brandishing a surgeon like precision throughout its production. “Wave”, the OKBADLANDS featuring single from rising Australian producer Golden Vessel is certainly one of those tunes. A simple and sticky melody rests atop a bed of carefully placed piano, airy pads, measured drums, and just a beautiful vocal slice from fellow Aussies, Sally and Kate of OKBADLANDS. Try not to get your swoon on to this one.

About the tune, the young Brisbanian shared: “I’d been working with Sally & Kate over the last few months producing tracks for their debut EP. I really loved working with them, and they are both immensely talented, so I decided to see whether they wanted to collaborate on this track. After a quick creative discussion over some burgers, I got stuck into finishing up the instrumental and OKBADLANDS had the vocals finished up within a week.” If only all singles this good came together so easily. Slink back with your coffee or tea this morning and slip into “Wave” from Golden Vessel above.

[Electronic] Vincent Coleman – Little Eyes [zacheser Remix]

We first stumbled upon rising D.C. based producer zacheser back in April when his debut original record “Skippy” sailed smoothly onto our radar. The young artist’s latest sees him tackling the remix game with a beautiful, melodic revision of Vincent Coleman‘s “Little Eyes”. Utilizing a foundation of housey roots, disco influences and unsyncopated ensemble rhythms, zacheser paints an addictive soundscape that pulls its listener into a tranquil flow state of aural consumption; while staying true to Vincent Coleman’s balmy original.

About zacheser’s remix, Coleman remarks: “DC producer zacheser is such a talented individual & I’ve been a fan of his for a while now. I reached out to him to do a remix and he surpassed my expectations, creating this new vibe to “Little Eyes” that still plucks at your heart strings but also gets your feet moving through an easy going atmosphere of grooving synths and consistent percussion.” I don’t think we could have said it any more eloquently. Enjoy zacheser’s “Little Eyes” remix above, and be on the lookout for more from the busy artiste in the near future.

[Techno/Indie-Dance] Tiger Tooth – Clementine [TMN Premiere]

Tiger Tooth -the East Village, NYC based electronic trio comprised of Johnny Siera, Will Broussard and Sofia Szamosi- came to us like the sweetest of gifts when they asked for our hand in premiering bouncy analog-techno instrumental single “Clementine”. Immediately, a muted synth that sounds like it was pulled straight off of an old 909 is underpinned by a buoyant kick-clap, setting the stage for the rest of “Clementine” to blossom into what sounds like a mid-2000’s electro romper lingered around a techno warehouse just long enough to embrace the weird while manging to escape with all of its accessibly cool points. This one fills us with the kind of gritty electronic joy that powered the blog-house era with so much fun, yet tasteful dance sounds. “Clementine” is one of the lead singles from Tiger Tooth’s self-titled LP on the fledgling imprint Baby Tooth Records, and with the amount of detailed craftsmanship found on just their first LP, it’s safe to say we will be waiting patiently as Tiger Tooth’s catalog continues to evolve and expand.

[House] Twenty One Pilots – Stressed Out (Action 52 Remix)

To be quite honest, I’m anything but stressed out listening to this latest flip from Denver-based Action 52. In fact, the only thing I’m really feeling is the need to lace up some dancing shoes and cut up a mean rug. This isn’t a new phenomenon experienced while listening to these guys’ tunes. In fact, it’s pretty much to be expected at this point.

Following up on a string of tasty g-house remixes, these two stepped away from remixing legendary hip hop acts like Ludacris, Kanye West, and Missy Elliot to cross over into the alternative realm, dialing up one dancy-as-hell interpretation of Twenty One Pilot’s “Stressed Out.”

With some strong Nu Disco vibes, Action 52 brings some serious dance floor flavor to what once was a somber, solemn tune. Yet, as much as the mood has changed, enough elements of the original are in place to make even the most devout Twenty One Pilot fans to nod their head, shake their hips, and tap their feet.

[Deep House] Lincoln Jesser – Time Will Tell (feat. Samuel Jacob)

It’s been nearly three years since we first stumbled upon Lincoln Jesser. Looking back, it didn’t take much for us to instantly fall in love with the infectious, dancy, and (now that we’re listening to it again) timeless sounds of “We’ll Be Fine.” Since then, we’ve featured him and his music over a dozen times, showcasing our rapidly-growing adoration for his musical talents.

Each time we listened, release after release, we always asked ourselves the same thing – “why isn’t this guy blowing up right now?” Well, “blowing up” is rather tricky, but definitely well-deserved in this case. And, his most recent release will certainly help him get in front of millions more, as he releases his second tune with Spinnin’ Deep.

“Time Will Tell” features a lot of the same nuances we’ve come to know and appreciate from this LA-based producer, but also highlights some new tricks in his growing repertoire. Boasting an energetic piano melody, hard-hitting kicks, and a smooth-as-silk bassline, it has everything you’d want from a proper summer jam whether you just tuned into Jesser’s work, or you’ve been a long-time fan.

Mat Zo talks about “Self Assemble,” Tennyson, and his Asshole Cat [TMN EXCLUSIVE]

Just a little while back, we hosted the legendary Mat Zo in our Residency Program to help highlight someone who has continued to impress us year after year. Part of this residency included a deep look into his recently released album, Self Assemble, which has been one of the most impressive listening experiences we’ve heard in quite some time.

We wanted to know a little more behind this perennial star and his latest body of work, which brought us to this Q&A.

TMN: Hey Mat – first off, thanks for coming on board to be our Resident Artist. We’ve been fans for quite some time, so it’s an honor to have you.

Mat Zo: Thanks for having me.

TMN: Let’s talk about Self Assemble. We’ve been spending a lot of time with it since it came out. It definitely feels like it’s organized to be a true top-to-bottom listening experience. Does it tell an underlying story, or is the track arrangement solely for proper flow?

Mat Zo: When I was making it I had a general story in mind, but by the end the story was so vague that it became purely open to interpretation.

TMN: As expected, there’s quite a bit of diversity, but we definitely caught a lot of nu-disco vibes in it. Were there any particular albums or artists that inspired some of those timeless sounds you harnessed?

Mat Zo: Guys like Chromeo and obviously Daft Punk were definitely an influence for those tracks.

TMN: Conversely, both “Patterns Emerging” and “The Last Transmission” are wonderfully ambient tracks, which calls on associations of some of our favorites, including Aphex Twin. Talk to how those two came to be.

Mat Zo: I wanted to have interludes dotted throughout the album to make it feel more like a movie score and help tell the story a bit better.

TMN: You feature singer/songwriter Sinead Egan twice on the album, both in “The Enemy” and “Too Late.” What brought you two together initially? There must be a special bond there, seeing as how she’s the only featured vocalist.

Mat Zo: Actually when I got her vocal we had never met. I discovered those songs when I by chance heard them playing from my friend’s room who I was living with in London at the time. He was producing the original versions, which were just guitar and vocals, and I asked him if I could use the vocals on my album and he thankfully agreed. I met Sinead after and we’ve become good friends since.

TMN: You’re hitting the road pretty hard to promote this album, stopping by a number of our favorite night clubs. Are there any shows, in particular, you’re looking forward to?

Mat Zo: Im looking forward to Sound in LA because it’s a club I’ve been to many times, but never played.

TMN: Switching gears a bit, you once said that you’re nostalgic looking back at art and music from 2004-2007. Who are some of the artists you’re referencing?

Mat Zo: There was a whole community of digital artists, whose names I can’t remember, on websites like DeviantArt, and smaller collectives like Depthcore. Back then I wanted to be a graphic designer and I was inspired by this wave of abstract digital art that happened at the time.

TMN: We know you’ve been outspoken about the direction the industry has taken over the years and we tend to agree with a lot of what you said. Does it feel like recently the fans are self-adjusting the industry by supporting underground acts, acts with live-instrumentation, and acts who go against that aforementioned norm?

Mat Zo: Yes, it had to happen eventually. People get bored of hearing the same thing over and over.

TMN: We’d love to nerd out and talk music with you, but seeing as how this is an email interview, we’ll have to suffice with this – who are you listening to right now?

Mat Zo: Tennyson.

TMN: Following up on that – are you more of an album guy, or a build your own playlist and enjoy singles guy?

Mat Zo: Definitely an album guy. I think music should be heard how the artist intended it

TMN: Alright, last one. How’s Qbert doing?

Mat Zo: He’s an asshole. I say that in a loving way

[Indie Electronic] KOLAJ x Eric Nam – Into You

If you haven’t heard of KOLAJ yet, you definitely will after “Into You”. This is one of those singles that can define an artist’s trajectory into big things, and their signature blend of tropical house and K-Pop brings together the best of both of those worlds. In their premiere with Fader, they exclaim,

We first got inspired by the tone of Eric’s voice, it’s breathy but cool in the verse so we wanted to playfully complement each other in a way that felt like we were incomplete without each other. We only got together for one day and basically turned out the entire song. We were big believers in the song even if it was outside of all of our comfort zones we still wanted to share with the world. K-Pop and Tropical could sound sweet together… perhaps we invented “K-Trop.”

Good luck getting this one out of your head because you’ll be hearing it all summer. Hit play and enjoy!

[REMIX COMPETITION] MOSAICS – Freedom

Following a slew of strong singles, MOSAICS released their sophomore project, Year of Valor, last month capturing the attention of various publications and a growing online fanbase. Delivering on the promise of its title track, the 5-song EP sees the SF-based three piece defining and solidifying their craft. While plenty of artists combine organic and electronic elements effectively, their positioning within that intersection proves novel. The intro track, “Freedom,” finds Mosaics at their best—with an inventive percussion arrangement, layered guitar loops and powerful, pop-tinged vocals. Even with its attention to intricacies, “Freedom” never waivers from a stripped-down aesthetic. Those same qualities make it a prime tune for remixing–either by adding to the arrangement or completely re-inventing it.

For that reason, we’re stoked to be teaming up with MOSAICS to give producers an opportunity to reimagine the song through a remix competition! Winners will receive a post on the The Music Ninja including their remix, a short interview and placement on our Soundcloud page.

To enter:

1) Download the stems here

2) Send your submission to ash@themusicninja.com with ‘Freedom Remix Competition’ in the subject line.

The winner will be announced on July 18th. May the best tune win!

Saturday Selection Vol. 10

Saturday Selection

Here we are at volume 10 of Saturday Selection. It feels good. What makes this so enjoyable is the fact that we’re lucky enough to get great music released every week, and we’ve got the artists & producers to thank for that! Whenever, wherever, and however you can, support these talented people. They make our lives better and the least we can do is attempt to reciprocate by showing we enjoy what they create. On that note, let’s explore what we’ve found from the last week!

artworks-000166358618-ubdyat-t500x500

You may have caught this tune in our latest Wednesday Workout segment, but it’s so good that we just had to mention it again! With that being said, San Holo needs no introduction. He’s been on a roll for a while now, especially since his monumental release “We Rise”. He’s taken to bitbird to show off his latest track, and the first taste of the label’s upcoming Gouldian Finch compilation. “Still Looking” is textbook San Holo in the sense that it combines the best of melodic, trap, and bass elements into his festival-ready style. It’s carefree. It’s substantial. It’s innovative. Enjoy this one when you just want to feel good.

artworks-000166495061-m4zd3y-t500x500

Here’s what’s cool about Khai: he’s unapologetic in his ability to detail exactly how he feels in his music and creates something beautiful around that principle. “Alive” is the latest shining example of this and, after his awesome If You EP, we’re just so glad to he’s back at it. There’s an air of optimism amidst the brooding production in this tune, and the balance between the two defines this stellar single as one of Khai’s best releases to date. Play this tune when you’re feeling a little down, but you’re also sort of okay with that.

artworks-000166517281-gzpvh0-t500x500

Jerry Folk has been on an interesting journey with his music as of late. Each release really has been something entirely different from the last, and this is somewhat the mission statement of loosely structured project, The Kids Tape. With “Where I’m Going”, he actually lends his own vocals to the radiant production that juggles prominent and funky slap bass, smooth keys, and an overall sense of positivity. Enjoy this one with the windows down.

Sometimes all we need is a little bit of lo-fi in our lives. Some may find it stale, but when it’s done right, it’s pretty phenomenal. g l u e 7 0 is here to provide some of the best of it. “Conclusions” feels like a hazy and slightly distorted dream world driven by a hip-hop influence while scant vocals flutter every which way across the soundscape. You sort of get drawn in without noticing, and before you know it, you’re digging through the entirety of g l u e 7 0’s material. The magnetism of this sort of music is tough to deny. Listen to this one on a late summer night right as the sun is going down.

M!NT just dropped off his Through Darkness EP and it is NICE. It was difficult to only pick one tune from it to talk about, but “Sleepwalker” stood out after a few listens. It’s part spooky, part chill, and wholly great. Without a doubt, the innate sense of head-bobbing-ness (let’s just pretend that’s a thing) is strong with this one with a smoothly riding beat and big presence that’s tailor-made for a night cruise. Explore the city late night and enjoy the flashing lights with this one.
