While championing the new Future Bass sub-genre which has become a mainstay of the EDM landscape, Alex Sholler has simultaneously gained popularity and recognition as one of the best female producers in the business. The Sydney-based artist, most widely known as Alison Wonderland, caught her big break last March with the well received release of her debut album, Run. While Run shot up the charts – as high as #6 – Sholler has toured the world (twice) and played sold out shows in front of a global fanbase that has valiantly attempted to match her frenzied stage presence.
Since the last time AW visited San Francisco – a May visit to 1015 Folsom, which we covered here – her presentation and skill as an entertainer has clearly grown. Sholler’s performance style lends itself to her trap-influenced hard-hitting album, which has maintained the attention of the EDM world and stands out as a unique juxtaposition of bass lines and layered synthesizers coupled with harmonious vocalizations.
Although a year-long touring schedule has left AW with minimal time to create new content since her last visit, she has developed an extensive catalog of both original productions and remixes since she began going by Alison Wonderland in 2010. Over the course of a nearly 2 hour set, Sholler played the entirety of Run, while sprinkling in a few remixes of her tracks by collaborative artists. In addition, attendees were teased with a number of unreleased tracks, which will hopefully be culminating in a new EP or album in the near future. As is customary with her performances, AW managed to sneak in the old school hip hop track “Simon Says” to inject even more life into the crowd.
After finishing another extensive North American tour with a bang, Alison Wonderland is once again headed back to Australia – hopefully to work on some new material. Next time she’s in San Francisco, we certainly know where we’ll be, but in the meantime check out some pictures from this year’s show below.
